@@Whitewing89 Well, I mean, about 20 tons and up to what, around 4 kilometers? Something like that. That is a bit different than around 160 tons from 60-70 kilometers. And it actually put something into space. I mean, the first rocket Nasa sent to space still made history, even though V2 was the first thing that ever went to space in 1944.
@Whitewing89Ай бұрын
@hoppie8693 point is this isn't revolutionary. Hell, this is how the moon lander touched down. You need the power to do this otherwise, you aren't getting to orbital velocity. Your fuel is all but gone, and the fuel is most of the space in the rocket. In order to control your flight, you need all the gimbiling and whatnot, and gps navigation is literally in every cellphone. In short, any engineer should be able to build a rocket that can land on target with modern tech. If you need your rocket to get a payload to a precise orbit, it can in all likelihood pull this trick to. The thing is, you get the most oomph out of the last bit of your fuel, and even if you manage ten flights with your "reusable rockets" the amount that landing it cuts into your fuel plus a refurbishment means it's not all that viable, when you can just eat the extra 20% or so in cost to get a new rocket and not wory about it an o-ring or something getting missed and blowing up the rocket on flight 3. If you want reusable, you aren't going to do much better than the space shuttle. Even SpaceX has given up on saving all the boosters and is ditching them now.
@hoppie8693Ай бұрын
@@Whitewing89 Beeing revolutionary is a soft concept and depending on definition. It is not synonymous with "making history". With that argument, any powered flight post Wright brothers can be dismissed. Did Yeager make history? Of course he did. Was it revolutionary? Depends how you define that, in the end it was still a thing with wings and propulsion, Wright brothers did it already. Is any thing reaching Space after Aggregat 4 revolutionary? Depends, maybe not, but a ton of them were significant historic events.

@@Whitewing89Then why hasn’t it been done before at this scale
@Whitewing892 ай бұрын
@johnswealu3917 Other than impressing people, what would be the point? To save the rocket, you can't use the most valuable part of your fuel reserve on your payload if you are using it to land the rocket. Just compare SpaceX's plan to the Apollo missions. Apollo was one launch and done. In trying to save the rocket, SpaceX's needs like 5 refueling launches, and they are saving what? 20% after refurbishing. From what i can tell, between trying not to burn up on reentry, needing to refurbish after launch anyway, and how much it cuts into fuel, it just doesn't make sense to do reusable. Add on to that the fact that doing more flights increased the odds that your reusable rocket will, at some point, fail like 3 of the test flights of SpaceX's heavy lifter have, and you start to see why it hasn't been heavily pursued since the space shuttle out side of elon musk, who uses it for his tony stark fursona to boost his stock prices.

Absolutely astounding. Why was I not aware of this earlier? The U.S. and Space X should be so proud. Occupy Mars.

The 2nd tower cam shot is the absolute best, it coming out of the cloud (launch plume) straight at you is one for the big screen

So, is that directional thruster on the bottom the sole source of control, or do those little flames coming out the side help? Thanks
