One last thing.....as a medical professional for almost 30 years, I often hear people humbly minimize their pain and say others had it "so much worse," It is wonderful that you think of others. However, YOUR pain is YOUR pain. It hurts. You must process this pain as it comes without deflecting it by comparing to others. The only way through the pain is through it. :). You are helping so many others right npow. And you are teaching your childen that it is ok to express their hurts ..... the opposte of "suck it up butter cup " which only delays the inevitable :)

Thats definitely something from the brain washing. I have heard many ex members stories and alot of them say that. There is a series 2 KZbinrs did where they joined the group and talked about what it was like. One of them a bad accident and was almost paralyzed a few years back. He did an auditing session about the event and they tried to change his memories about it so he remembered being calm and glad it happened. But he was actually terrified.

Blue asbestos is nasty stuff, I was a US Navy Engineer and spent 24 years on sea duty, we decommissioned ships and scrapped them (made into coral reefs) because of blue asbestos, cost of proper removal exceeded the value of the ship. I have no idea how much was on the Freewinds, but it usually safer to leave blue asbestos in place and not touch it (cocoon it with fiberglass insulation). Its so microscopic, its like breathing razor blades if any of that gets into the ventilation during removal the entire ship would become a Hazmat site. I recommend you keep following up with testing for asbestos infusion, it get in the pleura of your lungs, you will not know for years and things turn bad fast. I know I am personally on annual asbestos watch at the VA.

Yes and she said something about the Hungarians brought in to clean it up. Were they brought in because they were covered by any protections? Hmmmm.
@Unclejake
@Unclejake 7 жыл бұрын
Problem is, blue asbestos is microscopic you cant just wet it down and remove it, without building huge containment areas and massive air filtration areas for a extremely long periods once you move it, once its airborne...it can go anyplace air can go its not as easy as cleaning up something like brown asbestos. If that ship did have blue asbestos I can understand why the first crew walked off in 2008 at Curaçao Drydock Company and the local government sealed the ship as a bio hazard, the Ships Commanding officer in 2001 spoke about it being released into the ventilation system, that means the entire ship was contaminated, it doesn't take much to slowly kill you. You could think you were wiping a little dust, and thats all it takes. The Navy Ghost fleet that had blue onboard, when the folks went to do the annual inspection as the ships sat there rusting, the people looked like they were going to the moon, and they weren't even going to disturb the asbestos, just walk around. Asbestos was used to make everything from fake wood work to the floor tiles, because it didn't burn...Nasty stuff to remove, the US Navy found it was cheaper to scrap the ship and build a new ship then remove Blue.
@Unclejake
@Unclejake 7 жыл бұрын
I dont mean to be over dramatic, but personally I wouldn't walk on that ship, even today, the asbestos scares me more then Tom Cruise running around the decks in his tightie whities playing tag with D.M.

I've always wondered how asbestos was installed. Does it come in a roll like wall insulation?
@Unclejake
@Unclejake 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the application, I seen tile flooring and fake wood for walls made of asbestos. Usually for steam piping and such its much like fiberglass and comes in rolls, you apply it and then wrap it with lagging paste, but Ive seen in in block of hard insulation for things like superheated steam piping systems where you want the insulation and durability. Its a mined material basically starting out as a "rock" so putting it back in the earth is where it should be.

Very interesting. I left the Freewinds in April of 94 after 5 years of "duty" so just missed Leah. From her accounts and others things went pretty downhill from there. I remember Sharron yelling at me at the top of her voice trying to "handle" me to stay. When she realized she didn't make a dent she just turned around and walked out. Totally psychotic woman.

I was never in Scientology, but I was married to a clinical narcissist for 12 years. When she talks about maybe having sex and not knowing it, it rang bells inside my head. You are lied to so much over so long a period of time that you just don’t know what to believe anymore. I liken it to looking in only one mirror for years. Over time in the abusive relationship, the mirror slowly warps into a fun house mirror. It happens so gradually that you can’t see it happening and you don’t know what to believe anymore. Your sense of reality becomes warped. And even after you step away from that warped mirror, the real world doesn’t look right anymore either. Total mind f***.

It's so, sad to realize you've been duped-especially by the person your suppose to trust and love,(especially when you 'think' they love you?),the most and bound to! I'm still working through the aftershocks of the abusive relationship-I think people like us always will to some extent? So, sorry for the mind 'F' u went through, that is exactly what it is! Sociopathic behavior really :(

This is much more intensive than it seems. I was also in the sea org for 17 years and declared I wanted to leave about 5 or 6 times before I actually left. It is so hard on one. I had nightmares for 8 years after I left and it took another 3 years before I dared to look at anything negative about Scientology. It's now been 15 years and I had another Scientology nightmare a couple of nights ago. It's so insane it's hard to conceive.

I am addicted to defector stories of former Scientologists. You get a bird's eye viewpoint from, "on the inside." I was close to joining when I was a young GI stationed in southern Bavaria. I took and read a copy of Dianetics with me to read during Field Training Exercises. The military structure appealed to me. The brochures and study materials were so slick and glossy. The revelation of the Xenu story was not revealed publicly at that time.

Wow. Holy Fuck. I was the Repair Chief on the Freewinds from the day the "Church" took possession of the ship (then called Boheme) until May 2002 when I was sent off to die of AIDS with no medical treatment. My first wife was Sharron (Petersen Kimball Straass now Weber). I knew both Leah Farrow and Vanessa Paris. I was shocked to hear Leah mention me in the interview as being 40 years older than her and interested in her. I was interested in her. I am not 40 years older than Leah. Maybe 15-20 years older than her. I never indicated to her that I was interested in her. I probably looked 20 years older than I was because I was dying of untreated HIV/AIDS at the time. I barely made it off of the ship alive. I have done 2 videos with Karen de La Carriere which tells that story. As far as the Blue Asbestos (the most deadly kind) is concerned, we all knew it was down there; I once took a chunk, chopped it up and snorted it like coke. I was suicidal for real; it came up in a metered interview with the Dir I and R. And the Finance terminal sent by DM to clean the bilges; I was the one that showed him around the Engine Room when he arrived. I remembered him as the Int Finance Dictator who came to the FSO in 1982 and had me on the cans. I have at least 20 times as much data if anyone is interested. I have heart failure from the untreated HIV AIDS and my heart only pumps a quarter of the normal amount of blood with each beat. I have been living on borrowed time for the last 30 years so if anyone wants any info from me they had best say so while I am still alive.

Can you discuss at some point how people get promoted in scientology? It's clear it's an incredibly inefficient organization full of make-work, so I'm guessing any sort of management skill plays little to no role. I've gotten the impression it's based almost entirely on just how completely indoctrinated someone is in LRH 'tech' along with their ruthlessness (constant screaming at subordinates, physical abuse in some cases).

I had some events I consider traumas and have healed from them--nothing like you guys. I’m only halfway through this, but one thing I can’t stop thinking about is the bizarre circumstance that there were people on the ship itself calling to try to get people to go on it? As she says, calling off a ship is so expensive so why wouldn’t these calls be made somewhere else? Is every “org” set up in this way? Each one replicating the work of the others?

It really really makes me want to help people get out of scientolgy and help those that have been in the church.

The last place I'd want to be with these people is on a shotty ship out in international waters. Can you think of a worse place to be if you were to piss someone off etc? It wouldn't be hard to disappear out in the middle of the ocean. I wonder if the ship is used to transport cash to offshore accounts down in the islands.

Out 2D. 2D is an abbreviation of the term dynamic. Second dynamic is sex, and marriage. In scientologiees to go out 2D means to cheat on your partner. In the sea org you are not allowed to have sex if you are not married so in the sea org it would mean to have sex. Thats like as bad as crucifying jesus. To have sex unmarried in the sea org

Ok I'm a Christian pastor. I have questions do the regular not alien teachings work? It seams alot of people leave miscavige not scientology? After watching many videos scientologist seam distant as to a rehearsed emotional response like giving you the emotional response you are expecting is this a result of the e meter stuff of making up responses

Thinking about my first comment, I concluded it needed a little explaining. Chris, the reason I follow your channel particularly is that it seems to me unique amongst all the other tell-it-all anti-Scientology channels in that you are neither aggressive nor trying to explain your own situation, but are on a search of your own with a defined research question. This question, if I have understood it correctly, might be summarized as: What causes people to fall for a cult, what makes them give in to mind control, what makes them leave and how can they best adjust to the real world afterwards? The manner in which you attack this question is non-judgemental and self-critical, which is what I miss, just as an example, with the channel John Cedars, who comes across as an anti-JW activist to such an extent that his interpretations can be very personal and one-sided and he tends to make absolute judgements where, on the basis of his interpretation, none are warranted. This ability to be critical also of one’s own position and conclusions is something I really acknowledge in the way you approach your research. Your research questions correspond very closely to my own, only mine is formulated in a more general way: What is the relationship between Identity and personal Initiative? It is my thesis that you can assess the freedom and independence of an individual by the degree to which the person stands for his or her own identity and is free and motivated to act on the basis of personal initiative. Joining a cult means giving up a substantial part of one’s identity and sacrificing one’s right and desire to take personal initiative of one’s superior/s in the cult. The first free initiative many people then take is to leave the cult. To me this connection with initiative is important to know because it could break through the guilt and self-blame attached to leaving a cult and “causing” one’s loved ones to disconnect from one. One leaves the cult on one’s own initiative. The responsibility for disconnecting, going under the radar or leaving in turn rests solely with the persons who remain behind in the cult and don’t wish to act out of their free identity and initiative. Now, the question of passports and certificates are closely connected also to our personal identity. This identity is based on four or five major factors - family, nationality, education and profession first and foremost, but then also language, experience and several other things far more diffuse and difficult to certify. It is the duty of a democratic country to support the free and independent identity of their citizens, If I lose access to my passport, identity document or my Master’s certificate, as long as there are people and institutions who can vouch for the truth of my claim to that identity, it makes no difference, and the certificates will be replaced with a small charge. If, however, I somehow believe that not having access to my passport, i.e. not being in a position to PROVE my identity, robs me of my free and independent existence, I become very susceptible to intimidation by others. It is like believing that I’ve lost my Doctorate because the certificate is lost, in other words, it cripples my motivation, my self-image, my ability to stand up for myself and believe in my government’s right and ability to stand up for my individual rights. What is in reality a simple question of fact can become a complicated psychological dilemma. So my question to you, as I formulated it in my previous comment, is in how far you believe this lack in one’s education, in one’s sense of self that results in believing that someone who has my passport has power over me, could be indicative of a propensity to hand over one’s independence and identify with a cult? The parallel of Scientology’s holding (in fact “confiscating”) the passports of foreigners in their employ with what happens on board ship, or at least used to, is a false one. When you sign onto a ship, you enter into a work contract with the shipping company. It is this contract alone that gives you the right to enter foreign countries for which you have neither work permit nor visa. It makes perfect sense that the captain should therefore hold the passports until you need them once more. Should he misuse this power, there is always the Port Authority anyone can turn to, even before they enter through customs control. That alone is evidence enough to me that Scientology is doing something that is on the fringe of legality. If anyone were to go to their consulate, the CoS would receive an official letter demanding the return of the passport to the holder and would either have to comply or lie and deny they ever had it. They cannot possibly have any right to withhold it. That’s my two bits worth on the relationship between Identity, Initiative and passport control. Hope it helps towards some clarity and looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the question.
