"Ohmigosh, those nerds named stuff after something memorable." I'll remember that the Tinman gene corresponds to genes that grow muscles in a fruit fly like it's heart. I will not remember that we discovered planet AG36-57b52A in galaxy XJ7-UH67JA8.

My cell bio professor at uni used to say that biologists are better at naming things than astronomers. Neil Degrasse Tyson always says that astronomers are better at naming things than other fields. Turns out, there are well-named and poorly-named objects in every field of science, and everyone is just prideful of their own profession XD
@grammarnazi14696 жыл бұрын
There are so many genes and proteins with names that are letters and numbers with no apparent meanings. Also it's hard to understand and remember a species' binomial name if you don't know Greek and Latin. The names of bones are also not memorable. But I definitely remember black hole, red giant, big bang...

It’s probably worth noting that Dracula in the original novel only has an aversion to sunlight, not a fatal weakness. The classic unauthorized film adaptation, Nosferatu, is the first to show sunlight killing a vampire.
@Rithene6 жыл бұрын
It wasn't an aversion, it was basically a coma. Sunlight isn't specifically brought into it, but vampires in the original Dracula entered a death-like state during the day. Probably the whole sunlight idea was latched on to because (spoilers) at the end of the book, they're basically racing the clock to kill Dracula before night, and so obviously they're keeping an eye on the sun.

Roman concrete is actually pretty easy to make.If you gather some limestone or even seashells, and then let it sit in the flames of a fire for 4-5 hours they'll begin turn red, but once they obtain the crimson color they're ready to be taken out and mixed with other ingredients.You then add water after the limestone has been heated, and you want to mix the two until you reach a thich pasty consistency.After you're done with that you'll need to add volcanic ash + pumice and stir all of it together until it's completely mixed.You'll then want to put your concerete in a mold and let it solidify.

I heard that what really makes modern concrete deteriorate so fast is the rebar we use to reinforce it. Moisture and oxygen seep into the porous concrete, making the rebar rust and increase in volume, putting great pressure on the concrete and cracking it from inside.

6:44 That's not an accurate description of what is happening. The light shining on the metal is partially absorbed, exciting the electrons into a higher energetic state. When these excited electrons "fall" back into their original energy state they release energy in the form of light. The wavelength of the emitted light depends on the difference of the energy states.

Modern concrete has lime removed because it dissolves in water overtime causing the concrete to crumble. Whereas when mixed with salt water this creates "hydrated lime" which is then incorporated in the mixture when it cures. The water is in there technically but it can't erode the cement over time as its chemically bonded.
