I used to have a cat. She hated everyone but me. We never verbally communicated, but after 10 years of being best friends we'd figured out exactly what the other wanted with just body language. I knew when she wanted food, water, attention, outside, to be warmer (she had arthritis) etc. She knew when I was upset, sore, happy, or lonely. She'd come and cuddle up to me when I was upset. She wouldn't even leave me to use the bathroom. She would come in every few minutes to make sure I was okay. Because of my autism, I'm funny about any kind of physical contact, but I never pushed her away. Then when I moved out of home, I left her with my parents. She was getting older, and I didnt want to move her around because I was scared she would die if I did. My parents told me she waited by the door for months, waiting for me to come home. After about 6 months of this, she died. I remember getting a call from my parents telling me she was on her way out. When I got there her organs were already shutting down. I had to bury her on my own. Even two and a half years later I still break down when I think about her. She was closer to me than any person in my life, even my family. I feel like it's my fault she died when she did. Like if I had have stayed there she'd still be around. She was only 10 when she died, and cats live for up to 20 years on average..... I feel so guilty
@lindenshepherd6085 Жыл бұрын
Just want to let you know, that isn’t your fault. It’s hard to be separated from your peoples, but cats can push themselves to be social and develop new connections when they want to. It sounds like your cat was content to wait, even if it wasn’t the healthiest things for her long-term.
@prospectparktherapy1891 Жыл бұрын
Kinda hard to understand why you would not have gone back to get her when you knew she was waiting by the door...? So many stories about animals left at shelters who wait and wait. They are confused and do not understand why they have been abandoned. I am upset hearing your story as it was cruel ababdonment...Maybe on some level you actually didn't tolerate the closeness as much you thought you did.
@Solace6428 Жыл бұрын
@@prospectparktherapy1891 no. I left her with my parents when I moved out, because I was worried that the move would kill her. She was already showing a lot of signs of age, such as blindness, arthritis, etc. She wouldn't have been able to explore a new place well, either. Leaving her was an attempt to do what was best for her. I am hurt that you would even suggest that.
@kitefan1 Жыл бұрын
If your kitty was already having as much trouble as you describe it's unlikely she would have lived much longer than she did if you had been there. Cats that spend a lot of time outside live about 7 years. Indoor cats live from 11 to 16 with only 3% living to 20 or older.
@GiselleBel Жыл бұрын
Your post stayed with me so much that I went back to look for it (can't believe how many YT videos I watch). I wanted to tell you that you don't need to feel guilty (I totally understand that you do and that it goes really deep). My thought was that only some cat breeds live longer lives, but for others it is more like 10-12. I know it must be so tough to deal with, but you were a really good friend to her and your decision to not move her was for her benefit, out of the best intentions. I hope you can eventually let go of the guilt feelings and get to grieve for her without that burden. You had a wonderful relationship with each other, it would be truly lovely to be able to celebrate that! I'm sending you my very best wishes (and please ignore that immature ignoramus who proved that he's missing any ounce of empathy). I wish you well.

I’m surprised there was no mention of cats’ Jacobson’s organ (the same mechanism snakes smell with.) When cats rub on you then lick that spot, they aren’t trying to wash off your scent, they’re picking it up with their tongue and depositing in in that organ on the roof of their mouth to get a better sense of you. It’s not as refined or sensitive as a snake’s but it another piece of the amazing sensory world-building toolkit cats possess. It’s also comforting to know your cat isn’t trying to wash you off, but rather getting to know you better.

At least she did her job in a planter and not on a carpet. Those stains are a b!tch to eliminate. Altho that raises the question from a cat keeper: what was wrong with the cat litter? Most likely it was overdue for maint work (cleaning and/or change of litter filler). Other possibility is that there was something wrong with her. She may be upset or angry about something. Or she was feeling ignored too much and desired more attention. Altho peeing in another area is rather extreme, usually cats do other things first before doing something as extreme as that. The "our houses are too cold" idea is only somewhat true. It depends on the breed of cat. Cold climate breeds; like Maine Coon, or Russia Blue, tend to find our homes a bit on the warm side. @@ginettepagan3387 (continuing to acknowledge your experience, which I did not doubt or argue with at all), again: the fact that cats love a nice box even in sunny & warm Puerto Rico clearly proves that they don't care about the little extra heat in that box in hot weather. Just as you said. But that doesn't mean they also don't care about that same extra heat _when the weather isn't very hot_. They may not care even then, but "the Puerto Rico experiment" simply does not prove (or imply) that, that's all I said. So, the connection to body warmth idea may of course be irrelevant in warm weather, but it may still be very much relevant in cold weather. Which wouldn't be all that surprising either, knowing how much they always actively seek warm patches, surfaces to rest on. (Again, the fact they obviously don't do that, but look for shade instead _when it's too warm_, doesn't mean they don't like being warm _in general_. E.g. during our long continental winters my cats prefer their boxes with extra lining and some extra insulation underneath the box, if it's on a colder surface.) And, regardless, the "fun factor" of cardboard boxes may of course still be more important than heat anyway. (Not arguing with that either.) My family had a cat, Patsy, A small tuxedo male that was neutered late. He had a huge ego and was a truly great spirit. Though small he ruled the house. He was horribly injured and almost died defending another housecat from a marauding stray German Shepard that escaped a neighborhood house. While both my beloved Fido, a very delicate and feminine Persian, and the attacking dog (blinded by Patsy in the attack) died because of their injuries, Patsy lived on to beyond 20 years of age. He was the toughest, most masculine and self confident creature I have had the privileged of knowing. I said "great spirit" and i meant it. That cat was unflappable. Neighbors were adopted after they moved in by a giant rough Tom they named Beast. Beast was truly an "outside cat" but showed up when he needed a meal. In exchange he brought my neighbors presents, usually opossums the size of Patsy or larger. His torn ears and many scars were evidence of a life lived on the road, finding comfort where he pleased and bringing death to many a creature. Beast was the biggest "domesticated" cat I have ever seen. If Patsy heard the rattle of kibble into a dish next door he would run over and shoulder Beast out of the way until his belly was full. Beast never complained, just watching quizzically. I say all this, and there is much more I could say, to set the stage, to give you an glimpse of understanding into patsy's weakness. While Patsy enjoyed marijuana, he would come and ask for the smoke to be blown into his face (hey, it was the '70s), he had no weakness to catnip. Cantaloupes, however, were quire another matter. He LOVED cantaloupes, not the flesh, just the skin. he would chew it, gnaw it, wallow in it, and become hopelessly intoxicated. This wasn't a casual attraction. I have had the misfortune of knowing a couple junkies. Their craving for heroine and the crimes they would commit to obtain it did not match Patsy's drive. put one in the fridge and he would open the fridge, leave it open, and wallow in the smashed fruit on the floor as the milk spoiled. Hide a cantaloupe in the top kitchen cupboard and he will roll it out to smash on the floor and lie in it drunken and disabled with a dislocated hip, but not a care in the world. He would lie there, broken and disheveled, staring back up at me with this stupid grin as if to say "Isn't this great!" Almost 40 years later I still miss that cat, and i'm not a 'cat person.' He still visits me in my dreams. When we have cantaloupe I always leave some skins out where he can find it.

@kimberlyperrotis8962 - I saw a "NOVA" episode called "Cat Tales". It is on their KZbin channel right now (September 2023). In it, a researcher did finely tuned studies of the brains of his test subjects. They reacted to cat "meows" the very same way as they did to the cries of human babies. Those cleaver cats! No wonder we fall for them.

3:40 there is a legend of an extinct Chinese cat called the Chinese Lop-Eared Cat, that used to be a pet hunting cat in ancient China. There are records of this cat, and paintings too, but most were made by foreigners who did not speak fluent Chinese; which perhaps makes their stories less believable. If this cat did exist, or something similar to this cat did exist, there is a chance that it was domesticated separately from other cats as they were often described as being larger, with big floppy ears; an animal that closely resembled cats, but not exactly. There are also records of pure white, blue eyed cats that were lapcats of rich ladies, most likely because they were either deaf or blind as most white and blue eyed cats are. Thus they were unable to hunt, but were still used as house pets.

You can try talking back to your cat like a mama cat would - sort of a "prrrm" sound. (Watch a couple videos with mama cats to get the idea, lol.) I do it with my cats & they seem to like it. Especially if they seem upset about something & are meowing about it, I will make mama cat sounds to them & they calm down.

I read somewhere that the 'meow' is pretty much reserved for humans -- cats don't generally use it to communicate with other cats. It seems to be a general purpose greeting / demand -- 'pet me!', 'feed me!', or 'play with me!'.
@jennifer90472 жыл бұрын
My cats all have very distinctive meows that sound like words. Calhoun says "merengue", Ray says "hair", Lukas says "brown", and Finnegan says "ear". So we came up with questions to ask each one where their meow would be the correct answer. "What kind of pie, Calhoun?" "Merengue!" "What kind of sugar, Lukas?" "Brown!" "What's in the ball, Ray?" "Hair!" and "Finnegan, what's different about Spock?" "Ear!" It sounds stupid, but is hilarious. 😂

It is true. I am from Cyprus and as an island that used to be a dessert, we had a lot of reptiles. Reptiles caused a problem, so they arranged for a boat with cats to take care of the reptiles. I have a theory about cats kneading: they are taken from their mothers too early. We had a litter and decided to keep them all. What we found out is that our mama cat nursed until her babies were 5+ months old (even after they were all fixed, and were getting to be the same size as her). Most people rehome kittens around 8 weeks old.

we have some cats from our own mama cat so they were never rehomed and weaned naturally, but they still knead on us all the time when happy..

My cat was originally a stray who ended up in an animal shelter. When I first got her, she refused to knead on me. She wouldn't do it. Several weeks later, once she got settled in, she started jumping on me and would go crazy kneading. It seems like she had to learn that yes, this big hairless ape was good and would take care of her before she could let her guard down.

I kind of feel left out here. My cat rarely purrs, she does not respond to catnip and she doesn't knead. I've also never seen her eye (she only has one) glowing at night. She also takes control of the bed at night (I usualy pretzel my body around hers and wake up sore), slaps my face in the morning when it's time to get up and, if that doesn't work, she gives me little love bites on my arm. She was feral when I found her so maybe that has something to do with what she does/doesn't do. And I love her to death. Thank you for the video.
