Am I the only person who finds it bothersome when scientists describe animal mimicry and behavior like it's consciously? Like, baby birds don't grow in such a way because they know there's a toxic caterpillar in the area and weaving in such a way will mimic that. They aren't thinking "I will act like that bug over there!" It's just a evolutionary quirk that happens. Walking sticks don't consciously grow a stick shaped body to look like a stick any more than I purposely, and consciously grow brown hair or produce skin cells with little melanin. I will concede that the octopus is probably smart enough to be consciously aware of what it's doing in its mimicry.
@karlerikson82315 жыл бұрын
I see your point, however I know sensory organs relay information to a brain. I believe a brain= consciousness, though different for every animal.

There is a general failure in media to correctly depict evolutionary action, even by those who understand. In simple terms, random genetic mutations (may or may not) have a (positive or negative) effect (if any) on survival of those possessing the new expressed trait(s). Environmental conditions also change randomly and abruptly, causing positive traits to lose value while enhancing the value of previously less desirable traits. In this case, slightly orange, slightly fuzzy chicks lasted slightly better and evolution drove the appearance and behavior of the chicks to increasingly mimic something very distasteful to eat. The main ingredient for these astounding but rather common transformations is time, plenty of time. Remember, we only just arrived here ourselves.
@glenngriffon80325 жыл бұрын
@@samarnadra It's more likely to be instinct that the spider puts it's legs up to look like antennae than genuine thought to try and look even more like an ant but I do believe that animals which hunt have a larger capacity for thought, even rudimentary thought, than other animals. It's just a pet peeve of mine to hear people describe passive things in an active way. Which is how I really should have worded my original post. To go back to my skin analogy if I get freckles, I'm not active making them, they just appeared on me cause of time spent outside in the sun. It's a mechanism my body is doing on its own, but if I were in a nature documentary you might hear Attenborough speaking saying like - "Her skin is not adapted for her climate this close to the equator. The sun's harmful UV rays are dangerous and can cause harmful, even deadly repercussions, but she has a trick up her sleeve... To protect her skin from the sun she will change the pigments in her skin. She will increase the production of melanin and develop spots upon her skin which will protect her from the sun. It's not a perfect defense, but it's better than nothing."

About that jawfish... Although it's documented as opportunistic right now, the jawfish's technique of using the octopus's coloring as cover might turn into some sort of preferential adaptation down the road... particularly if certain jawfish colorations look more like the octopus than others. This might be a good example of how at least one process of evolution by natural selection begins.

Just yesterday, for the 5th time, I had someone say to me "I saw your doppelganger!", after seeing someone who they claimed looked identical to me and who was walking into the same hospital, that I was at yesterday. Sometimes, they refer to the other person as my "twin". My then manager, at my job, claimed to have seen me on a street, which I hadn't been on in years. A cashier at a store said, she knew my "twin" from junior high school and her name is Rachel. I also went to that same school, but my "twin" was apparently 2 years ahead of me. Another time, a stranger mistook me for my "twin" and said my "twin" & I both wore the same long, metallic mauve trench coat, which weren't that common. The scary thing is, that one of those times, it was my own mom & dad who said they saw my "twin". My mom said, "I kept calling your name, but you just kept on walking. Why did you ignore me?" I was miles away at my job, when my parents saw this "twin" of mine. Who knows exactly what you look like, more than your own parents? Each of those sightings happened within about a 10 mile area. So, I keep waiting to run into my "twin/doppelganger" at some point.

So, assuming I'm applying the birthday paradox correctly, a 1 in a trillion chance of two faces matching on those 8 facial characteristics means that in any database of more than a million people, you're going to (with more than 50% probably) find at least one pair of people who match. So, for the roughly 7.5 billion people on Earth, you need to add enough characteristics to drop the chance of two faces matching to around 1 in 10^20 if you want a less than 50% chance of at least one pair of doppelgangers in your world wide database.
