I’m an HG survivor and I can’t believe the timing of this video coming out on my 1 year anniversary. The number of women affected is probably much higher, maybe 8%, but doctors have VERY rigid metrics they want you to meet and are slow to diagnose. Unfortunately, the discovery of GDF-15 as the lead cause is so recent that most doctors have never heard of it. Basically HG is generally a genetic (possibly autoimmune) issue where you don’t make a lot of GDF-15 to begin with and placental/fetal tissue causes your levels to skyrocket many times more than a usual pregnancy and possibly for the entire gestation. This is affected by the mother’s genes, but the fetus’s as well. GDF-15 is a primitive distress hormone that everyone’s body makes during injury or illness. According to one documentary about the condition, in studies, the level of GDF-15 in women who had been hospitalized compared to people dying of cancer…was FIVE TIMES HIGHER. It was a physical and psychological experience akin to actual torture and I cannot believe more people have never heard of this condition.

YES!!! I know so many women who, at some point, had to be hospitalized, and it's not like I met them in the hospital, they are all either neighbors or moms of my son's friend. 3%, no way. I was not diagnosed during my first pregnancy, because medication could keep me from vomiting. However, I still lost a significant amount of weight due to the constant, never-ending nausea and I could puke 3 times an hour without it, all day long, still counts, right? With the second pregnancy, I got a diagnosis because even with medication I would throw up several times a day and couldn't even move from all the nausea.

That's really interesting - my sister and I were pregnant at the same time. She was throwing up multiple times per day, all the way til third trimester. Thankfully, I could see that she was extremely unwell, and, just as she was about to topple down the stairs, I caught her. We had a lovely boss who was very understanding. My colleague was taken home and told to take off as much time as she needed. She spent the next 5½ months at home before her baby was born. @@lilililililililililityou aren't the only one who finds "pregnant people" or "people with uteruses" unpleasant terms, but I'd encourage you to ask yourself why that's unpleasant. We use those terms because there are people who are pregnant who aren't women, and HG doesn't skip them just because of their gender. Fundamentally, the important thing for HG is that the person is pregnant, and their gender or lived experiences have very little to do with it. Similarly, "person with a uterus" and "woman" aren't synonyms. A lot of women have uteruses, but some don't - whether because they have had them removed (many women have been asked about their last period when they've had a hysterectomy 😅) or because they were born without one (intersex variations and transwomen, especially). And some people who have uteruses aren't women (e.g. transmen and non-binary people). There are very real risks and burdens carried by people who are pregnant or menstruating, and it's important we recognise those in everyone who has them.

Your roommate was on the right track, but she was wrong about it. This video suggests that morning sickness is caused by a spike in gdf15, and the role of the spike in gdf15 is to prevent the immune system from seeing the fetus as a foreign body. Basically, morning sickness is a side effect of the mechanism that makes sure the baby stays inside. Not everyone can have HG, but only those who are genetically susceptible to it. That's why, people who had multiple pregnancies, and at least one was HG, were at a higher risk to lose the pregnancies that were NOT HG. A pregnancy with HG, WON'T be rejected by the body. A pregnancy without HG is either in a mother who will never have HG, or in a mother with an increased chance of rejecting the pregnancy. In a way HG is good news for the baby, just not great for the mother.

They would then move the pregnant ewes into the "fatty" field with all the wonderful grass, flowers, and other yummy veggies. They learned the babies came out stronger this way. I always wondered if NVP is mother nature's way of doing the same thing for human moms who have access to food. It helps to make the umbilical cord thicker/wider which in turn helps the baby.

After my baby was born, so many people - including those who knew what I had been through - complimented me on not having baby weight. Uh, I was literally unable to keep anything down my entire pregnancy. I have brain damage from malnutrition. Congratulate me on being alive not on meeting some arbitrary weight standards.

This is really cool information! I suffer from daily vertigo with nausea and was only "morning sick" for about a week during my pregnancy, and we just assumed it was the flu because it was so brief. For some reason being pregnant actually cured my daily vertigo for the most part and it was the only time in my entire life I was not nauseated 24/7. Unfortunately within 3 weeks of giving birth my regular, daily vertigo w/ nausea was back. Absolutely wild experience. Now if someone could tell me why, 12 years postpartum I still can't eat certain foods that pregnancy dictated were Bad, I'd love to know! It's not even like I ate them and got sick and that ruined them for me. I never got the chance to eat them and find out because I couldn't even be in the same room with them and now 12 years have passed and that hasn't changed. Foods I used to love. Every now and then I try a bite to see if I can get over the revulsion and turns out, no.

That’s so fascinating about your vertigo and nausea! The one thing I’ve heard happens to pregnant folks is that if you have certain autoimmune disorders it can get better (eg rheumatoid arthritis), something about the body reducing your immune reaction so that you don’t reject the fetus (might be fetal modulation I can’t recall).

I had HG with both pregnancies and started going into organ failure with my second. My doctors told me “No more babies” and my husband and I agreed. Too miserable. Most days I couldn’t do anything but lay there and cry and crawl (not walk) to the toilet to puke. I was too dizzy to walk due to low blood pressure, but I got pregnant in January of 2020, so ER’s were like something out of a science fiction movie. The times I lost consciousness my husband dragged me to the ER for fluids. It was so scary. I hope they can prevent HG in the future. But because I never showed ketonuria I didn't classify as HG but looks like they've changed the criteria. Had it with all 5 of mine. I'm curious that previous pregnancies wouldn't have provided sufficient exposure to have some preventative esp as I was pregnant with my second by the time my first was 8mo. I'm hopeful for better treatments for future generations but know that testing meds in pregnancy is exceptionally difficult. I wonder if there is any study done between some treatments that seem to help to some degree (Diclectin and magnesium for me) on how they might interact with the Gdf15.

I get it with every phase (follicular, ovulation, luteal, menses..). I'm also emetophobic, so the anxiety the nausea causes combined with the nausea itself (and other symptoms, depending on the cycle phase) can be a little bit debilitating for me. I'll be honest, as someone that had HG with both of my kids, I think it's way under diagnosed. There are some really callous OBGYNs out there and before Kate Middleton many scoffed at HG even being real. For me I experienced my pregnancies years apart in different cities with different doctors and hospitals. Despite vomiting until I passed out on a daily basis and requiring IV fluids, both sets of doctors ignored me, refused to call it anything more than morning sickness, and often shamed me saying I was over reacting or accusing me of having bulimia. Even today with much more awareness I know of many mothers that state they had bad morning sickness and how their doctor didn't know what was wrong, but everything they described fits HG.

HG can also apply to dry heaving/retching. When I had it (before I was on the intravenous pump), I was only throwing up once a day, but I was dry heaving/violently gagging about 15-20 times a day. I was throwing up more than 30 times a day, loosing weight at an alarming rate and my OBG still refused to take my condition seriously, when my mother and mother-in-law called him stressed out of their minds by my condition his response was “well if your worried just take her to the ER”. After 3 months of disregard and multiple ER trips and hospital stays I switched to a midwife that gave me medications that finally slowed the vomiting and told me about HG. Honestly I believe that were researchers to ask HG survivors, we would find an overwhelming amount of evidence that shows doctors dismissing our health concerns allowing them to reach life threatening levels, and medical abandonment. I’m glad they know the cause but there are things that can help those of us with this condition survive it better available now, if doctors will actually listen and take the issue seriously.
