I guess it could be annoying for tourists - and even offensive in some cases - to be drawn to your country because of a character in a British novel though. I'd imagine most people don't mind s tourist who's interested in seeing Bran Castle and other "vampire attractions" but also wants to experience other more authentic aspects of their culture.

An additional fact about vampire bats is they have elongated stomachs to speed up water absorption, so that their excretory system can purge it quickly. Since they need to drink half their weight in blood every day, this is necessary to help keep their body weight low enough to fly off in a hurry. So when it comes to all those vampire romance stories, it's not all that romantic for a vampire to be biting into your neck if he's also going to be peeing down your leg the whole time.

I have PMLE but exposure makes it start to get worse over time, not better, and repeated exposures make it behave more like solar urticaria (throat can close up, flu like symptoms, etc.). It's really miserable. I loved being outside all the time as a kid and I wanted to do work in a zoo/outdoors. Myriad other health issues have hampered all of that over time, but the sun thing was the first major problem I had and it's heartbreaking to realize what's going on.

The whole sensitization/desensitization to different populations of mosquitoes makes a lot of sense. I just figured I wasn't allergic to New England mosquitoes...turns out, I just haven't been bitten enough. I was definitely sensitized to Texas mosquitoes when I lived there. Those little buggers would give me welts with 2-3 inch streaks radiating off them.

There are other symptoms of porphyria that relate to the vampire myth, that weren't mentioned in this video. The changes in the gums can cause them to recede, making the teeth look longer, and consuming iron-rich food was a common treatment for porphyria a few hundred years ago. They mentioned that it's hereditary, but not that it's recessive, so it was much more common in the heavily inbred royals and nobles, who already inspired fear and awe. So when medieval folk saw their pale, crazed, sun-avoidant lord chowing down on bloody liver with his long teeth and red mouth, it's no wonder they thought something supernatural was going on!

"Local mosquitoes" is an important qualifier. When my wife first moved to the US, she had huge reactions to American mosquito bites, much more than she ever experienced in China. Over time, it reduced to a normal reaction, but she is still extremely wary of mosquitoes because of this.

Nice to learn the name of something I had years ago. PMLE, never heard of it, but suffered from it for a decade. It suddenly started in the year I got my bachelor. Probably the stress triggered it. After some years the inflicted area became smaller and smaller. The last year it was a tiny spot. And then it was gone. Now I’m intolerant for alcohol. And doesn’t go away. That really sucks. On sunny days I miss a glass of white beer so much.

I have severe PMLE and found this video very interesting! So many people think sun allergy is just a rash but it is so much more. Not only is the rash extremely painful, but when I am exposed to a lot of sun I also struggle to breath, feel dizzy and have heavy flu symptoms. It can also trigger other allergies that I don’t normally have. For example on days where I went outside I can’t eat seafood or fish. The worst thing is my body don’t get exposed to enough sunlight to have a normal sleep cycle, I sleep once every two days and the sleep last for 10 hours or more. It puts enormous pressure on my social life, work life and love life. I haven’t slept normally for 10 years, haven’t been to a beach in 10 years, have to skip on events if its a sunny day, and can never visit Spain or Italy again. Cloth wise its just a lot of boring black long sleeves, no cute skirts or tops or anything summery. Hopefully one day there will be treatment or cure for people like us.

Hah, my mom used to call me a vampire when i was around 13/14. I developed a sun allergy at that age (my mother and grandma both had this too around the same age) I couldn't even sit on the window side at school, and even with long clothes i still had horrible rashes when i went outside. It went away after about 2 years, now i'm just overly sensetive to sunlight and burn fast, but no more rashes. That plus my natrual paleness and insomnia at that age earned me my special nickname.

Mosquitos are not the worst blood sucking insect out there as far as itching is concerned. No see ums are much worse. The itch is terribly difficult to calm. I have found a combination of a heat device applied to each itchy bump several times a day and then applying a home made salve from the plantain plant that grows in your yard infused in olive oil, chickweed infused in olive oil and calendula essential oil added to a carrier oil (I like a little almond oil and some olive oil) and melted beeswax to stiffen it up to a salve consistency as well as using an oral antihistamine. That works the best for me.

As someone who was highl allergic to sunlight as a child (PMLE, most likely) and still is - albeit not as heavy -, I have grown to my own theory about at least my cause. It looks like it has a lot to do with either clacium or Vitamin D. When I was a child I comsumed lots and lots of ice cream, chocolate and milk in the summer, when my skin was exposed more to the sunlight. I cut back on almost all of it as a teenager, when my allergy suddenly healed completly. Now, as an adult, I consume more diary again which leads to rashes on exposed parts of my arms especially in summer. I don't experience those as long as I consume only small amounts of milk and diary over the course of a week or two. And even if the rashes started, I can still managed to put a stop on them by not consuming any milk for some days. So I highly suspect that there is something going on with the combination of (probably) the calcium and sunlight.

When on a vacation in Florida in 1997 I had about 130 mosquito bites (yes, I did count them), took photographs of them, and went to a pharmacy to get some iodine based disinfectant. It helped. Why the photographs? I didn't want to dwell on the itch, pain, and discomfort, I wanted proof if I would have contracted a mosquito-bite related disease. I was lucky, no disease. Nonetheless, I had a fever for two days. I'm kind of tough, it didn't spoil my vacation. After feeling better, I moved on with my rented RV.

It's possible to become immune to mosquitoes. I grew up in the midwest, where we had both the big tiger mosquitoes and the smaller, regular kind (not sure exactly which species). A mosquito bite from either of these would give me a pretty normal, small, itchy red bump that lasted about a week. Then, I moved to the east coast. They also had tiger mosquitoes, but they must have been of slightly different stock than the ones I was used to. Their bites would give me giant, golf ball sized lumps that would last for about half an hour. During that time, my throat would swell, and the lump itself would be so intensely itchy I couldn't help but writhe a bit. This only happened to me a handful of times while I lived there, but most episodes involved at least a dozen bites all over my body. We can estimate I was maybe bitten by these 'extra allergic' mosquitoes about 100 times. After that, we moved again, this time to the southern Us, and I have also since been back to my original home state a few times. I am no longer allergic to any mosquitoes in either area. They bite me, and nothing happens. I still avoid them, obviously, because they spread disease, but I think it's interesting that only about 100 bites completely 'cured' me of having a reaction. (Fyi, the best thing for itchy mosquito bumps is cold water. The sooner you can cool down the site after being bitten, the quicker the bump will go away in the long run. Trust me.)

As someone who also used to burn or break out into hives as soon as I got in the sun, even with antihistamines, I can now do so and only sometimes break out into hives. I can even stand in the sun without burning immediately. I'll still turn pink in the Summer in 15 minutes or so, even with sunblock, but nothing like it used to be. I do have to wear sunglasses because "Bright light! Ouch!" I went Carnivore and I take a supplement called "Blood Vitality". It's basically a combo of freezedried bovine blood, liver, and spleen. My sun and temperature tolerance has improved like 1000 fold. I'm no longer anemic. Not to mention other aspects of life. Just sharing because when I started having those issues in my early adult years, it drastically changed my life. Having them decrease to such a degree has been amazing. I'm still taking antihistamines. Though it varies. Some days I don't take any. Other days they really just keep things from getting dangerous, but those days are not the norm. Please don't think I'm trying to push anything, I'd just feel guilty not sharing in case you wished to look into it.🦇

It's basically a variation on folk wisdom about when a plant is or is not safe to eat - some of which are reality based and some of which are not. Erithropoietic porphyria is another sort of 'vampire'-looking condition. In that one there's severe sunlight sensitivity and reddish bodily fluids due to a congenital issue which leads to an accumulation of protoporphyrins in their blood and bodily fluids. The example I know of allergic desensitisation comes from being a cat breeder. The breed I work with is hypoallergenic, but they are not hairless and have some of the offending protein. One of my customers got an Oriental Shorthair and was very allergic to it as first, but stuck it out. She became less allergic to cats and is now able to have a normal cat also. She is however not 100% desensitised and cats with a lot of the protein still cause her to react. I guess it's harder to do this with mosquitos because we don't keep colonies of them as pets. So no constant exposure.

I live in Northern Ontario, lots of mosquitoes, not many mosquito borne diseases. I hate bug spray so seldom use it. In my teens I stopped being allergic to mosquitos. Its great.

im ginger, i do not go out in the summer days if i can possibly avoid it; when i do go out i cover up as much as possible, sometimes i used to wear gloves and use as high a factor as i can find, exposed skin burns after 10mins still getting severe after 20, either way my skin itches, like it is being crawled all over, for around two weeks after exposure. i am good at shade hopping. i have very pale skin, which with the zinc looks a bit of an un-nateral white (i wear a factor 40 spf moisterizer all year round) Oh! my spouse died young, so ive worn lots of black for years- though not so much this summer

In my childhood....really up into my 30's...tick bites (Arkansas Ozarks) and mosquito bites (South AR, MS, and a few Maine summers) always bombarded my pale self to the point of frantic itchiness!! No prevention method worked! In my 40's, I was diagnosed with an inflammatory arthritis and began a chemotherapy....I have rarely had a bite since! And I seem to have developed a Spidey-sense to mosquitoes landing on me. I know live in Arkansas's mosquito zone, so if anyone was watching, I would appear to be doing a very bad rendition of Popping & Locking while swatting away those blood-suckers!!❤

Bruhhh..... that's kinda like my sle lupus. I am iron deficient and anemic and I get blisters and rashes in the sun and the more I'm outside the more fatigue I get and the more pain I'm in.. also I have always been drawn to the vampire lore for some reason it just seems like it could maybe exist.
@mikevides4494
@mikevides4494 Жыл бұрын
So fun fact: the "myth" about vampires burning in or fearing sunlight comes from the 1922 silent film: Nosferatu. Prior to that, vampires did not fear the sun in either folklore or literature (go read Dracula... or Carmilla, or The Vampyre, or Varney the Vampire - they all walk in daylight without harm). So it's unlikely that porphyria's light-sensitivity aspect informed the vampire myth - and the theory about the disease has come under intense criticism for several years (either for misrepresenting the illness to better match vampire lore, or vice versa, making assumptions about vampire lore that confirm the bias - such as connecting porphyria to sun aversion)

18:27 I know the medical field would probably not recommend this method but the premise sound and does work for me. If you have a large mosquito bite try squeezing it. You should get a clear, sticky fluid that first comes out. After getting most of it out then cover the bump with antibacterial cream and a bandage. The cream is to keep the opening clean until it heals a bit. The itching should disappear within 15 minutes after doing this. I have a very high histamine reach to mosquitos so I rip my skin apart when this happens leaving me with huge open sores. Since I’ve started squeezing the gel out I have a pin hole opening which I keep covered for a day or two and it’s all healed by them.
@FloatingSpark
@FloatingSpark Жыл бұрын
I would suspect the stuff being squeezed out is mostly the liquid that exists in our cells, a clearish sticky liquid comes out of any small skin damaged spot when squeezed, however it also seems likely that it would bring along with it a bunch of the irritants that cause the itching, which I think mosquitos inject so that their prey doesn't feel them biting initially.
@Bethlam
@Bethlam Жыл бұрын
@@FloatingSpark mosquitoes inject an anticoagulant into the skin right before they begin drinking and that’s what usually causes the irritation. If they didn’t our blood would begin to clot as soon as they puncture the skin and they wouldn’t be able to drink the blood. If you get the anticoagulant out the irritation goes away.

I used to have reactions on mosquito bites, but I don't have any more. I am probably desenstiized. There are not so many moquitos in our country as it used to be, probably due to several years of drought and intensive use of pesticides. I don't miss the terrible noise they make, but I think those animals who eat mosquitos must be very hungry now. I don't encouter mosquitos so often any more, but even when I do, I don't have any bumps. I am happy there is a scientific explanation for that, I am just so sorry for the poor rabbit.

Mosquitoes are interesting. I grew up in the bush and I'm a lot more tolerant than most of my friend who grew up in the city. However even though I do get bitten and still feel the bites, out of my friends that also grew up in the bush for some reason I'm one of the least liked by mosquitoes. Some of my friends seem very tasty to them though. Mosquitoes are odd...

im a dutch person living in spain for roughly 16 years now, this summer i had to spent a couple months back in the netherlands and noticed that im way less affected by mosquito bites there than i am over in spain, like they will itch a little bit for maybe 10-20 minutes instead of potentially still itching after a day or two, however this never used to be the case when i lived in the netherlands, is there any explanation for this?

When my skin gets to a certain temp , I brake out in hives every time, if I sit out in the sun too long my skin started over heating, my skin then brakes out in hives🙄🙄, now living in Australian Outback where it gets blooming hot a lot can suck during summer time(pun intended), funny thing is it only started to get worse in the past few years as I get older. When you young it’s fine it’s easy to live with but as you get older it gets old fast. 😹😹at least I now know why it’s happening, it’s was never something I told the Drs about either never gave it a second thought, I knew that by morning it would be gone and the day would start all over again unless the temp stayed low that day. 😹😹ah that’s why I have trouble with misquotes bits, when we first moved to Australia a simple bit left me with bite marks as big as 8 inches, every night my room had to be sprayed and all gaps sealed up just to get through the night. I got tired of that very fast, so now I bury myself under my bedding at night and hope for the best, the one thing that does help is at least when there is a male buzzing around I know now there is a female very close by, so I have a spray can next to my chair and bed so I can give a quick spray around😹😹 See does not matter how old one gets we all learn something new each day😹😹😹

Hmm, mosquito bites have been far less annoying for me the last few years, I wonder if that might be because of anti-histamine? I have been taking allergy medication the last few summers. I don't think it is because I gotten close to immune, I don't get that many bites (I hardly even seen any mosquitoes this year for some reason, maybe because May and June was so dry).
