I remember arguing with my biology teacher about that. She told the class that dinosaurs are reptiles and amphibians. I told her that this is impossible. Dinosaurs are exclusively a branch of reptiles now extict, saving birds. She berated me and gave the student that came up with the idea that amphibians also were dinosaurs a positive remark in his class book. This is now ages ago but this enraged me so much because she was not only totally wrong, she spread her idiocy and rewarded the ones who bought it and she did it all the time.

I find it deeply saddening that such people are teaching subjects they have such limited understanding of. I mean she was not only wing about there being amphibian dinosaurs, but as a biology teacher she should have known that her argument that dinosaurs "are reptiles" is also a nonsense. Biologically speaking there's no such thing as reptiles. There is no way you can define a biological clade that includes snakes, crocodiles, lizards and turtles without including penguins, sparrows, chimpanzees and mice. The definition of a biological clade is that it must contain a species and all species descended from it. The modern species that people think of as reptiles were from an old pre-scientific system where things were clumped according to how they looked and acted - so all the scaly, walking things which laid eggs were put together as "reptiles". However, crocolids, serpents, turtles and lizards are not actually very related at all - and to find their most recent common ancestor you'd have to go back further than dinosaurs (which would mean they and therefore all the avians would have to be included in the clade) and probably further back then the dimertrodon which, as Hank indicated in this video was part of a group that were the ancestors of all mammals. So any biologically meaningful definition of "reptile" would include all animal life except insects and most of the stuff that lives underwater.

Yes! As a geologist I love this video. Every single thing that was said was, to my knowledge, accurate and complies with our current understanding of palaeontological history (which is quite rare to see on KZbin videos). N` chan well it’s not really possible. 1 the ground that their stuck in when they fossilized is already old it’s deep enough that it won’t be brought up by a flood. Also these layers of rock can be geologically dated using other data as a reference. 2nd we also use carbon dating bones. While most carbon is a stable carbon-12 (and since from what I know all life is based on carbon) life forms also contain a bit of carbon 14 as well, and using the carbon-14s half-life you can get a pretty accurate age on said finds so the only way to get a false age is geologically but they’d conduct carbon dating pretty soon which would clear it up.

As a paleontology student, I hate seeing videos on youtube where people who don't know about dinosaurs ramble on about them. However, I think I speak for the entire paleontology community in that I really appreciate the overall accuracy of this video. Only one thing: when you said "If it swam, it wasn't a dinosaur." While all the examples you raised are true, that statement is not one we can safely make. We have evidence of modern birds being aquatic, in addition to the obvious example of Crocodilians. Therefore, if we are to stick to dinosaurs' phylogenetic bracket (the archosaur clade), there is nothing preventing certain dinosaurs from partaking in a semi-aquatic or aquatic lifestyle.

Yeah, I was wondering about the veracity of that comment. That would be like saying that all Mammals live on the land, which would immediately make all Whales, Dolphins, Manatees, Dugongs, etc "not mammals". Then again, it probably does come down to when and where in the evolutionary tree these creatures decided to return to the sea. If they branched off from a common ancestor, then I could see the claim holding, but if there are some dinosaurs which adopted the aquatic lifestyle then it would only be right to say they're in the same grouping, correct?

Ahmed Usman Well,No....... Loch Ness Monster or (Nessy) is a sea surphent (PS. i cant spell) and looks like a giant snake mean while the Plesiosaur or Lapras Has fins or webed feet and can go in a forward motion when a Plesiosaur or Lapras swims in a up and down motion.

Keena bug actually nessie sightings most of the time when close enough to make out a shape have 4 flippers a short tail,long neck, and an arch or horn on its head its not a serpent but people think that because a lot of pictures only show it above water a little bit so it looks like a giant water serpent. so lapras=nessie

Yeah, that sucker was horrifying. 95-98% of all life died. Happened as a result of...well basically all of Siberia opening up as a volcanic rift. The resulting cooling (from sulfates, short term), followed by, if I remember properly between 10 and 20 degrees of mean global temp increase (from CO2 release and knock down effects like ocean warming and subsequent methane hydrate release. Long term) bas Baaaaad

Jurassic Park has always had non-dinosaur prehistoric animals. They've had Pterosaurs in multiple movies and the first book, which aren't dinosaurs, they've had prehistoric insects like Meganeura in the first book and the locusts in the knewest movies, they've had the Mosasaurus, which is an aquatic lizard, not a dinosaur, and the Lystrosaurus, which is a synapsid, like the Dimetrodon. They've never only had dinosaurs.

The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition. Indeed I see what ethnicity means. It was rude of me to be mean and I apologize, I'll agree to the thing you said about "if every member of a population watching this, that population would be better educated." I believe that if every American watched this, they would be better educated, the only problem I had was if you were judging a group based solely on their nationality.
@EternalSilverDragon9 жыл бұрын
Jake from State Farm Yes, I agree, it's not fair to prejudge people based on things like what country they live in. In fact, if every person in the world watched more education and science based shows, we might live in a better world - with better living standards and less discrimination in general. One can hope...

I have been thinking. Carnivorous dinosaurs are always shown as these extreme, ultraviolent creatures that would attack anything in sight (Jurassic Park). But, what if they were more like the animals that roam the earth today. You can see that lions will attack a gazelle, then feed the pack. But do they attack anything that they see? No, only if they are hungry. So I think that you could probably be a dinosaur, (and as long as you don't catch the dinosaur in a hungry mood) and just go on your way past the t-rex. I am not a professional, I know that. But I made this observance.
@DarthBiomech10 жыл бұрын
They could be territorial predators, who would defend their territory from trespassers.
@slopedarmouredpony10 жыл бұрын
It's all situation. Modern animated documentaries do portray large carnivores stopping aggression after their target is hunted. They are, however, very cinematic showing them charging large herds of prey animals, causing loads of panic, then everyone slowing down to take a deep breath of grief and relief after the target (or predator) has been killed. The thing is that the dinosaurs would be the kind-of violent collateral damage creatures you would imagine in the movie because, well, they are huge, and their greatest fears were huge. Even the biggest predators are easy to agitate in a world where apex predators just happen to be cannibals as well. Today, since many animals are relatively small unlike in the past, they cannot cause so much collateral damage when agitated, so it looks like they are less violent when really they are too small to destroy anything significant with their violence. Agitating a brachiosaurus is the same as agitating a cow...except that one is several dozen tonnes heavier...
@cedricfrangi599710 жыл бұрын
Let's not forget that they're reptiles and reptiles tend to be protective and sometimes aggressive.

So penguins are the only sea dinosaurs?
@ShadeSlayer191110 жыл бұрын
Kind of, although penguins aren't entirely marine. They are as marine as Polar Bears are, and Polar Bears are pretty terrestrial compared to fully marine mammals such as dolphins and whales. Plus, some prehistoric dinos did swim, such as the piscivorous Spinosaurus, so penguins aren't that unique as far as dinos go.
@rataflechera10 жыл бұрын
ShadeSlayer1911 I know penguins are not full marine but I think they are rather as sealions than as polar bears: although they need land for giving birth/laying eggs or rest, their bodies seem more suited for swimming than for dwelling on land; they hunt in water and they can spend several days off shore. But those are just details. I should check pisivorous and spinosaurus for their maritimeness.
@shadowthehedgehog31137 жыл бұрын
Them as well as other swimming birds like gannets, ducks, or Hesperoniforms (extinct). Then there are the Spinosaurids as well as some other Megalosaurs. I don't know of any other aquatic dinos but I wouldn't rule them out.
