Cutting the lamp cord at different lengths so that they don't bump each other and short so easily is brilliant, one of those things that I saw and just went "... how did this not occur to me before?!". Thanks for that, that alone was worth the watch! But the rest of the video being interesting and informative as well was a nice bonus :)

When I was a kid, I saw a plasma globe in a shop. It facinated me so much, I decided to make it. As I didn't had money, I started researching for how it works, what parts I needed. I came to know about EHT supplies for the first time. I spent huge time in junkyards, buying scraps, collecting things. Form long time trial and error, I find one ic555 circuit, with 3055 power transistor which worked like a charm for driving these EHT coils. Some old TV colis which are more flat rather than cylindrical work more effectively generating huge sparks. I could smell ozone while working on that supply. One major drawback is that these coils have inbuilt diode that reduce it output. This project taught me very much about high voltage supplies and this video reminds me my childhood. Thanks brother ❤️

06:24 You don't need extra capacitor!! Two capacitors are already there on the CFL circuit for the same thing. 1:34 Pin 2 and 3 have two capacitors in series in between them. In your CFL glass tube Pin 1 & 2 are shorted, also pin 3 & 4 are shorted. Test with multi meter continuity. So now when you short pin 1-2 and 3-4 and connect to the flyback you'll get massive arcs, may be better than the 522H capacitor. Note: Pin numbers may change according to manufacturer. Check back of the circuit board to figure out the capacitors.

Bro, thank you so much. Indeed I shorted pins 1 with 2 and 3 with 4. Instead of just using pins 1 and 4. It increased the arcs power!!! I mean not that massive, but considerably. Thanks dude

Instead of adding the capacitor which can easily kill your driver, you can modify the choke coil or add some more in parallel. It increases the voltage and current but will not kill the driver if there is no load on the transformer. Just don't reduce the choke coil inductance too much otherwise it will die.

Problems with this method is that its efficiency or if it works or not is dependent on the compatible between the transforner and cfl circuit used. From what i understand the general problems include: 1. Transformer doesn't make arcs: 2. Arcs two small 3.Cfl circuit burns up somehow. Usaually bad oscillation of circuit, caused by saturation or no load voltage rise. can be solved by adding 20 turns to the circuit inductor and shorting the two terminals. This prevents saturation problems and provide a load. But in doing so you might have to add more turns to your flyback as its primary inductance is two low and high current spikes causes instability or even burn out the cfl curcuit. 4. Transformer burns up Use a bigger transformer, smaller cfl circuit, or rap more turns on the transformer primary. But note that two much turns on the primary of the flyback can cause bad oscillations due to high inductance and saturation. You can try rapping multiple strands of wire to about 30 turns each. Then keep putting more and more wires in series untill the circuit stabalize.

Thanks and you're welcome! I thought of a cfl as a high frequency circuit and a flyback transformer with multiple coils similar to a Tesla coil. Both will put off high frequencies, so to me it made sense to combine the two. Then I added the capacitor to increase the frequency.
@eminusipi
@eminusipi 4 жыл бұрын
@@SciTyeTech Have you ever measured the freq of the cfl power supply? I did it many years ago an I think that it was several times higher than the approx 15KHz that CRT flybacks operate at. If so, by adding the capacitor across the leads wouldn't you be lowering the frequency closer to what the flyback likes?

There could be a problem with the flyback transformer. Also did you try to arc the wire to the correct pin? Sometimes there are more than one pin that can arc and usually the are some pins that makes a smaller arc compared to the primary pin.

hey I like your narration it's kinda calming. I did try this with a 30watt cfl circuit and it worked without the capacitor between the primary but once I added one that has "CBB81 123K1000X" printed on it (same size and color as the one you used) I was only able to see brief arcing before cfl circuit failed and black components underneath blew up as well as the toroid inductor which also burned. I've read of some HV devices that cannot tolerate to be left open-circuited and I guess it was the brief moment before or after I separated the wires enough for the arc to dissapear that my circuit blew. you mention at least 26watts is needed to safely use the cap for longer arcs so how can I avoid this from happening? should I dip the cfl circuit itself in oil or do I need to take another measure like using some kind of dummy load to make it think it's always in a close-circuit condition? I want this to see phenomena in vaccum tubes and spheres and someday possibly make a homemade fusor but meanwhile I would like to be able to stretch the arc to see how far it goes without fear of things breaking up in smoke again. thank you for the clear tutorial that kick-started me into these awesome experiments
@SciTyeTech
@SciTyeTech 3 жыл бұрын
It works for me because I am not letting it arc for a long time. I did notice that the flyback was getting hot very quickly. Putting the flyback transformer in oil with a cooling pump is the best way to go. And to prevent unintended arcs from accruing, you will need to isolate the leads.
@nomenneskio1542
@nomenneskio1542 3 жыл бұрын
@@SciTyeTech thanks so much for replying! the thing is mine also works when touching the wires briefly and I don't see much heat coming either from the cfl circuit nor the flyback itself, it was only until I added the capacitor that the circuit blew the very moment I stopped arcing. do you have any idea of what might be going on? is perhaps the lack of a load that overcharges the circuit?

You mentioned using an oil to cool the flyback transformer. What type oil would you suggest, and would you completely immerse the transformer in the oil? I have read that mineral oil works. The reason I ask is that I want to build an ion levitation model and it will require constant feed of high voltage. I would need the transformer to output for extended periods. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just found your video after i striped the parts form an old PC CRT and a lamp driver of a copier so it runs on 12V. Using an 800Ω 40W resistor i had lying around draws a lot of heat away from the transformer whole thing is about 15W only after limiting and the arc lenght is not that much affected guess limiting the current and not the voltage. Trying to create a soft corona for an ozone generator I want to make. Know anything about that? O and thanks for an awesome vid.
@SciTyeTech
@SciTyeTech 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! An ozone generator seems like an interesting project. But be careful, it can cause lung damage. I have some ideas on how to make one. You can try making the same circuit that you already made, but add some pc cooling fans blowing air in a tube. Have the arc of electricity in the center of the tube, pc fan on one end blowing down the tube into the arc and put a filter on the other end. Air comes in, arc ionizes the air and filter filters out impurities.

It will run longer without the capacitor. However, it will get hot. It will get hot faster with the capacitor. What you want to do will work fine, just don't leave it on when not in use.

@@SciTyeTech Thanks for the info! Without capacitor I ran an ozone plate, with low intensity, for 3 hours with 18 Watt Philips CFL ballast. Neither Ballast nor Flyback got heated, they were cold. But with capacitor, ballast stopped due to heat after 5 mins. But ozone was vigorously generated. I used two 272J capacitors in series. Boy! the arcs were three times bigger!! 😍 Had to use chicken stick after I got zapped.

You can use any amounts wattage, the higher the better. This one I am using is 35 watts. But the only problem is the higher the wattage the more heat is generated in the flyback transformer.

Yes you can. It will require a zvs driver.12v is good, but around 24v to 30v is better. You can see that in my other video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2jcmIGPa5dgnbM

The lower wattage cfls do tend to not work as well, but you can still find a lot of them on Amazon with higher wattage.
