I went back again last year and wild camped. Very naughty. We camped below the tarn and walked up the following day and it was cold and wet. I didn't find any fish rising. We dropped down to the tarn below Low tarn just over the hill on the right hand side below Red Pike. I found a small dead trout and Dr Ian Winfield formerly of the centre for Ecology and Hydrology said it was definitely a small trout. I think you will find the fish in Scoat Tarn are small brown trout. The only other contender is likely to be the char a close relative of the trout. It likes deep cold lakes.

Hi Bob - thanks for that imput - fascinating to hear Brown trout were found further down - their spawn must have got in there from Birds carry it? I managed to spot the tadpoles, and i know fish love eating them so at least anything in there wil get some substance for a brief period along with possibly blood worms & other crawly beasties :-)

Hi Paul I visited Scoat tarn when I did the Mosedale horseshoe with a ate of mine about 5 years ago. I noticed the tadpoles but couldn't see any fish rising. I checked a DEFRA website out of curiosity and it mentioned trout. The lake hasn't suffered to much acidification. I also saw mention of trout in an angling website . There is another tarn below which is also listed as Scoat tarn on some maps but this is wrong its low tarn and is accessed by the little river above the one you were following. I have seen trout in the river that flows from low tarn possibly sea trout

Hi Barry - sorry for a heck of a delay in responding - life got mega busy - but yeh, it was a hike and a half without gear, just the heavy tripod & camera's!
