When it comes to picking its chief ministerial faces, the BJP has mastered the art of springing surprises. Whether it was Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh or Bhajan Lal Sharma in Rajasthan, none of the political experts came close with their guess work.
Now, after the 2025 Delhi Assembly results, several names are doing the rounds to lead the BJP government in Delhi. Will it be someone from the current stock of BJP leaders in the capital? Or is the party mulling the option to bring in a rank outsider?
The chief criteria would include, first, a candidate with the gumption to take on the Opposition, especially Arvind Kejriwal, and one who can fill the leadership gap in the party's ranks in the long term. Second, a face that fits the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah worldview. Third, the choice must have the RSS stamp of approval. Fourth, a candidate who can balance the various caste and regional equations in the capital. And, fifth, the age factor.
Who will it be? The jury is out.
But the list of probables is long. It includes Parvesh Singh Verma, Manoj Tiwari, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Smriti Irani, Vijender Gupta, Mohan Singh Bisht, Virendra Sachdeva and Ashish Sood.
