Scooter Cannonball 2021 // Days 1 & 2: Bar Harbor, ME to Grove City, PA

Welcome back to our Super Cub Scooter Cannonball Run trip! Today is Monday, July 12, 2021, and we are beginning our 4500-mile trek across the country to Eureka, CA! Skip around with the chapter markers below.

We left our campsite near the Acadia National Forest late this morning, so we missed most of the group pictures and news broadcasters that came to cover the event. However, we saw the entire group assembled before the kickoff at around 6:45 AM. We chatted with several riders, and I got some videos of the starting group.
Day 1 took us 377 miles from Bar Harbor, ME, to Manchester, VT. The weather cooperated with us today, and the ride was relatively light. The ride was easy and relatively boring, but that wasn't bad. It let us get acclimated and settle into the routines of using the routing tools and rushing from point to point to take pictures. Unfortunately, I didn't capture much video that day due to camera issues. We arrived at the final checkpoint at the hotel without incident.
Unfortunately, two riders went down just a few miles into the trip when they failed to negotiate an off-camber turn where they hit some gravel on the road. Korny (#51) low-sided his Honda Forza 300 resulted in several broken ribs, a broken sternum, and a punctured lung. He was transferred to a trauma center and remained there for five days before being transported by ground back home to Florida (no air flights due to the lung issue).
DJTINY (#177) followed Korny into the corner too closely, and he went off the road and flipped over the handlebars. Luckily, he only suffered minor injuries, but his new Vespa GTS was mangled in the wreck. He couldn't continue that day, but he purchased a new Vespa and continued the ride FOR ZERO POINTS just a few days later!
Day 2 took us 493 miles from Manchester, VT to Grove City, PA. The weather wasn't kind, and we rode about half the day through medium rain storms. We made good time despite the weather and managed to crush out nearly 500 miles in about 12.5 hours (including fuel stops). My rear tire was toast at the end of Day 2 and had to be changed. The Michelin Pilot Street tire was worn through to the cords after only ~3200 miles! I had a spare Pilot Street 2 on my trailer, so I swapped that during the frantic bike maintenance in front of the hotel while we dodged more rain storms. Luckily, I could change the tire and seat the bead without hassle. Future tire changes would prove more difficult and require access to large air compressors to quick-set the tire's bead on the rim.

After watching your channel I finally purchased a 200 cc scooter. Its a blast to ride again after 40 years. I use it mostly on short distances but building up to more. Thanks! 🙏 I try to present all of my videos as a video diary so people can relive the events from my perspective behind the handlebars. We had an epic trip. These videos and my paltry editing skills won't do it justice, but I'll do my best to show the ups & downs of our adventure. I will definitely revise my audio/video gear for the 2023 SCBR to capture more of the adventure. I was fighting camera and battery issues most of the trip, so I lost a bunch of footage that would have been EPIC to share. For example, we rode through a thunderstorm in the mountains where we saw a BRIGHT double rainbow over a valley, and three lightning strikes fired down through the center of the rainbows precisely while I had the camera aimed at it! I checked my camera, but the stupid battery had died! AAAARRrrrrgh! I lost a bunch of other footage in the Badlands and some of the other remote gravel roads that would have been fun to share. I would have needed to create a new bleep button in my editor due to my non-stop stream of expletives, which nearly became a new language for a few hours! 🤣👍 --QM

What an adventure!!! Thanks for the info on your custom fuel tank, knew they were special. Michelin is apparently running softer compound on Pilot Sport. Installed YSS progressive single tube shocks on Cub rear. Sag is balanced with Cub handling improved. Sprocket alignment tool nails rear wheel alignment making HUGE difference in handling. Cub frame is very accurate. Don't forget the "Shew Fly" pie around mid-Pennsylvania. Wheel alignment will do that. Rear sprocket needs to point directly to transmission drive sprocket which you have changed. Maybe there is an issue there.

Thanks for the feedback! The Michelin Pilot Street tires that we were running seemed to be a softer compound than the original IRC's, but their increased wet grip was appreciated during all of the downpours that we endured. We used the Motion Pro chain alignment tool (PN: 08-0048, amzn.to/3om2fPM ) throughout our road trip to keep our Cubs' rear wheelw in alignment. We needed to retension our chains almost daily due to stretch and wear, and we installed fresh rear tires about every 7-8 days (3500 miles). That alignment tool saved a bunch of time. This is so cool! I used to have a 1987 Honda Elite 150 with tall windscreen. I put about 14k or 16k miles on her before I finally sold her. So much fun to ride! Interestingly, it would not go as fast as your Super Cub. On the highway, 50 mph was about max unless going down a good hill. I was just looking at the rules for the 2023 Scooter Cannonball and it looks like they have changed it so that Super Cubs with their larger wheels don't qualify any more. 10" max wheel. edit: Ah, I see, only 3 of the 5 things need to be met, so larger wheels are still okay if three items are met.

Unfortunately Honda hasn’t started selling the Super Cub in Canada yet. I’ve had several bikes over the years but desperately would love a Cub because of my age. Nothing like a long road trip. Done several on a Harley Road King.

We did 10K miles on these little 125cc bikes with tiny little saddles, NO highway pegs, and while pulling trailers! Howdy, Shelly, and thanks for the feedback! That's the KipMoto SherpaX trailer: kipmoto.com/pages/sherpax . They are designed for off-road adventure motorcycles, but they worked flawlessly for us during this 10K mile road trip around the USA. The manufacturer only makes small batches of these trailers 2-3 times per year, so getting a spot in the limited production queue can be a lengthy process. I'm working with KipMoto to build a hitch for the SherpaX trailer to fit the PCX150. I'm hoping that we'll have time to finish that project before my next Scooter Cannonball Run in mid-June. I think the easiest point to attach the hitch/hoop is at the PCX's lower rear shock mounts. I need to send him detailed measurements and pictures so he can work his magic for the quick-detach system (T-bolts that screw into captive plates on the rear axle or shocks). I plan to take additional measurements and pictures of the newer PCX160 and the ADV150 scooters to see if it can be a multi-purpose mount that fits all of Honda's 150/160 scooters. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I am about to buy one of these - 2024 in Niltava Blue. Couple of questions: how many miles on your engine? and have you ever had to replace the timing chain tensioner and guide wheel? I'm hearing that the GROMs EAT through these parts... is this an issue with the Cubs?

That's a good question! No, I haven't replaced the timing chain idler wheel or timing guide in my Super Cub yet. It has about 16K brutal highway miles on the clock now, and it's still running fine. However, I'm reluctant to take it on any extended road trips until the timing components have been replaced. I purchased Adrian's Super Cub & trailer rig from him last year, and it's sitting in my warehouse now. His Cub's engine sounds and runs much rougher than mine, and it's significantly down on power. So, that will be the first one that I open up to check the timing and other components. I'll certainly do a short video series on that project, and I might even install a mild big-bore kit on it (143cc) to see how that performs. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Yes, it was worn more on the chain side. One of my viewers replied back on that point, and they advised that it's not uncommon due to the crowned roads in the northeast. I hadn't considered that angle, but it makes sense! 😉👍 --QM

Thanks for watching! We abused these little Super Cubs for 10K miles around the USA... wide-open throttle for 12+ hours/day while pulling trailers. We had ZERO mechanical failures or issues throughout the entire trip... not even a flat tire! These are amazing little machines. I use a third-party program called Telemetry Extractor (goprotelemetryextractor.com/ ) to extract and combine the data for visualization. The gauges and layouts are completely customizable, and it allows you to combine multiple files and data sources. I generate a transparent MOV file with the gauge overlays, and then I stitch everything together with Adobe Premiere Pro. Why did you ride the cub instead of the P C X ?

That's a good question! I had originally planned to ride my 2015 PCX150 in the 2016 and 2018 Scooter Cannonball Runs, but my work & family schedule didn't permit me to attend. I was determined to run in 2020 no matter what came along, but C19 postponed the 2020 SCBR until 2021. I purchased the Super Cub in early 2019, and I started kicking around the idea of running it instead of the PCX. The Cub has lower driveline losses due to the chain drive, and the engine is more efficient. So, I posed the question in the SCBR riders' forum and started a new movement... lots of other riders were considering the Cub as well. It took a month or so for the final ruling, but they determined that it qualified to run, so the rest is history. The PCX is certainly faster, it's more comfortable, and it has longer range between refills... so it would make a "better", or at least more feasible, Cannonball machine. I'm never one for doing things the easy way, so I wanted to see if I could do it on the Cub. When I found the KipMoto SherpaX trailer, then that sealed the deal! Super Cub around the USA while pulling a trailer... DONE... sign me up! That's my kind of crazy! 🤣👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback, Virginia! I'm not sure how the scoring and handicapping will work in 2023. The Yamaha SMAX 155 was the best scooter for the 2021 SCBR due to its handicap and good top speeds (70+ MPH). The scooter categories and handicapping will reportedly change slightly in 2023, so that might not be the "ideal" scooter on the next run. I'm partial to Honda's, so my suggestion would be the PCX150, PCX160, or the Forza 300. A 2015-2016 PCX150 should have a decent handicap, and they do very well on long highway trips. Those choices will obviously depend on your comfort level and your physical size relative to the scooters (particularly in the case of the Forza 300 because it's taller and heavier). Another good choice in the Japanese brands would be Suzuki Burgman 200. I haven't owned any of the Italian brands (e.g., Vespa, Piaggio, etc), so I can't give any opinions there. My advice is to join the Scooter Cannonball Forum ( forum.scootercannonballrun.com/ ) and follow the discussions there regarding scooter selection and the 2023 SCBR rules & routing. That should keep you up to date on the scoring changes and the trending scooter choices for the Run. I hope to see you in '23! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The Michelin Pilot Street 2 tires worked well over this trip, but the rear tires wore down very quickly. We only got 3200-3600 miles out of the rear tires before they wore through to the cords. The front tires still look almost new after 10K miles. We balanced our tires for the first mounting in Houston, but the roadside replacments (2 rears for each bike) were done without balancing. We didn't notice any hopping or out of balance issues, so that was a bonus. 😉👍 --QM

I started watching your channel because I’m a biker and thinking about getting a Super Cub. I had a C70 Passport in the 80s and a Vespa P200E. I have a Ninja now and am looking for another Ascot. Anyway, I’m planing to cycle coast to coast and I bought a Bob Trailer which looks much like your trailer only not as robust. I’m wondering what kind of trailer that is. The trailer's empty weight (including the hitch) is only 35 pounds, so it pulls behind nearly any motorcycle like a dream! I’m only using it for the Oregon to KY part of my coast to coast trip.I’m going to just have panniers on my bike on the KY to Yorktown VA segment. Doing it all at once is a bit too much for me at my age. After that I’m going to tour Sweden, Norway and Finland. I’m not shipping the trailer to Europe for that. Does the cannonball keep you off highways? Also, would a Navi be a good idea if you plan on towing?

Generally speaking, the Cannonball route stays away from major freeways and interstate highways. However, there are some unfortunate exceptions where major highways with speed limits of 70+ MPH are unavoidable. We do the best we can in those circumstances... just pin the throttle open, stay toward the right shoulder, and watch the mirrors like a hawk for crazy cagers! The Navi would be a very difficult mule to ride for the Cannonball due to its low top speed (52-53 MPH max, closer to 45 MPH average), and its short fuel range of only 65-ish miles to empty. I considered adding a fuel cell to the Navi to extend its range for the Cannonball, but the Navi's slow speed would be a problem in some areas across the USA. So, I decided against the Navi for the speed and fuel concerns. Those same reasons also make towing a trailer problematic because the trailer would exacerbate those issues... even slower and worse on fuel range. 😉👍 --QM

Howdy, Greg, and sorry for the late reply! These are the original fenders that came with our SherpaX trailers... they appear to be intended for mountain bikes. We drilled a couple of small holes through the lower front edges and secured them to the swingarm rails with zipties. That hack minimized the flopping and the off-axis twist that the single bolt attachment introduced. We didn't have any failures of any kind throughout our 9700+ mile trip... bikes and trailers performed perfectly! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Howdy! The gauge data is an overlay that I generate using a third-party program called Telemetry Extractor: goprotelemetryextractor.com/ . The telemetry data for the HUD is recorded by my GoPro Hero11 camera and my Garmin Zumo GPS (when I'm riding with it). I stitch everything together with Adobe Premiere Pro to create the final videos. I like your trailer...did you build it or have it built? Any chance you could post some pics of it or message me some pics? I would like to build one for my Goldwing like yours. Your license plate says Texas...where in Texas? I am about 25 miles South of Fort Worth. Also, it is common for tires to wear more on one side than the other side because of the crown in the roads. The roads all have a slight down hill slope from the center to aid in rain run-off, so generally, your tires will have a different run pattern on the left side as you go forward. I pretty much have the same issue on my Goldwing, but I run a run-flat car tire on the rear of my Wing and a BT-46 (which is also a rear tire) on the front. My wear pattern now is almost equal.

We pick our routes to stay off of the interstates and faster highways, but that's not always an option. We'll get stuck on 70+ MPH highways sometimes, but we just stay to the right lane and yield to faster traffic by riding on the shoulder when necessary. We had very few problems with fast, crazy cagers during the Scooter Cannonball Run. Everyone seemed to be more curious and amuzed at the bikes than they were irritated that we were rolling slow in front of them. There were numerous occasions where faster traffic would slow down next to us just to take pictures, so that queued up all of the other traffic behind them. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

These are the KipMoto SherpaX adventure trailers: kipmoto.com/pages/sherpax . I considered using the Burley Coho and other bicycle trailers, but I don't think they would be suitable for running extended distances at road speeds. Bicycle trailers don't have heavy-duty, high-speed wheel bearings, so that would be the first thing to fail. Bicycle wheels and tires aren't suitable for highway use because they are too thin and not rated for sustained operation at higher speeds. The trailer mounting hitch was also one of my concerns, so I would have needed to fabricate a custom mount for the Super Cubs. There were lots of variables involved in selecting a suitable platform, so I wanted to go with something that was already proven and engineered to take a beating. These SherpaX trailers were designed to be pulled behind big ADV bikes and off-road adventures, so they are certainly durarble enough to pull behind our little Cubs! 😉👍 --QM

Nope... that's too big! I would also consider taking my SilverWing 600 on the SCBR, but that would be too easy! The maximum displacement for 2021 was 279cc. I'm not sure if that will change in 2023, but I think it will stay the same. 😉👍 --QM

YEP! We rode these little 125cc mules almost 10K miles around the USA and back. Our total trip distance was ~9850 miles, plus a few miles that weren't recorded by my Garmin GPS when it took it down on rough gravel roads. Neil is a mad scientist welder and fabricator, so he made that trailer and all of the other custom touring accessories for his Zuma 125. @vwjet357 If you keep the speeds under 30 mph, then a bicycle trailer might work. Anything faster than that will require high-speed wheel bearings and DOT-rated tires for safety. 😉👍

We considered that possibility, but the trailer's weight should have slightly reduced the tire wear compared to placing all of the cargo weight on the back of the bike. The combined weight of the cargo and the trailer was ~80 pounds, but that figure is roughly halved between the motorcycle's rear tire and the trailer's tire. The trailer definitely added more unsprung weight on the rear axle, so that influence on tire wear is hard to determine. The real issue was the long, straight highway runs on that narrow little 80/90-17 rear tire. All of the load and friction was centered on that little contact patch in the center strip, so it just burned down faster than a wider tire would have. Our spent tires still had plenty of tread on the shoulders and whiskers on the sides! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The uneven wear down to the cords was very odd. I'm a huge fan of Michelin tires, but these PS2's didn't fare well on our long highway runs. The Cub's rear tire is skinny at only 80mm (80/90-17), so there's just too much weight on a narrow contact patch. If I run the Cub in the 2023 SCBR, then I'll definitely find a tyre with a harder compound and/or use a wider tire to spread out the load over more rubber. 😉👍 --QM

Interested to see how it all worked out. The event looks tempting, but I rode over 17,000 miles, camping and touring the US, on a 250cc Yamaha in 2021, and that’s probably small enough for 220 pound me :)

@@clarson2916 Agreed! We weren't intending on competing at all during the SCBR. Our plan was just to ride around the country and participate in the "tourist class" of the SCBR. If we wanted to be competitive, then we would have needed to offload the trailers to one of the support trucks and carry only essential road spares during the ride days. DaBinChe used that approach, and he finished 2nd on his Super Cub. Our routing was arguably better than his because we continually met (or beat) him at checkpoints even though we were traveling at least 10 MPH slower. Perhaps we had fewer wrong or missed turns? Moto-camping the route wouldn't make much difference in terms of scoring, but it does complicate the logistics for the ride. Finding places to camp near the official start/end points each day (always at hotels for this event) could be difficult, and that adds extra ride time and less sleep. We missed out on a lot of the community events at the hotels because we arrived so late each evening. Faster/shorter ride times would have let us participate in more of the group fun at the finish lines. We're already planning our 2023 SCBR ride. We're still undecided whether we will modify our Super Cubs and run them again, or if we'll take PCX150's instead. Either way, we'll travel fast and light during the event. The extra weight of the camping equipment and non-essential spares will be offloaded to the support trucks so our scoots can run faster. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

All of these bikes and scoots are street-legal in all 50 states. There is some gray area in a few states regarding operation on interstate highways where the minimum "legal" displacement is 150cc or higher, but we never had any issues. As far as I know, none of the continental 48 states have any restrictions for use on state or rural highways. We can nearly always maintain 45+ mph, which is the minimum posted limit across the USA. We are rolling through backwater America with lots of farmland and tractors rolling along at 25-30 mph. We slow down going up the steep hills and mountain passes, but we're still faster than most loaded 18-wheelers. 😉👍 --QM
