why does nobody talk about how this kind of band music influenced john williams? this could be a star wars battle scene and no one would blink an eye
@BenjaminGessel4 ай бұрын
Part of the reason that John Williams is so good, is because he deeply listens to a GREAT many composers, not just one or a few, several, or even a dozen or so. He listens to THOUSANDS…

Your analysis is SUPER SPOT ON...A WONDERFUL RESOURCE for myself and any teacher getting ready to teach/rehearse/ perform this classic literature.

WOW what a memory jogger for me. My father co-founded a Summer Music School in Union, NJ back in the late 1950's. It was the treat of the Summer when we were bused on a field trip to Central Park's Band Shell to hear a Goldman Band Night Concert. I remember every year featured a left-handed cornetist, James Burke (disabled right arm as I recall). What great memories, especially since we survived Central Park at night!

I absolutely LOVE this piece and it's an amazing 5 minute's of music. Mennin really packs a lot of music into that short span of time via excellent counterpoint.

A very fun piece. I had the privilege of performing it six years ago, as a clarinet player. One of the things our ensemble particulary struggled with was staying out of the way of the eighth/sixteenth note rhythmic figures at rehearsal marking L. Anyway, thanks for your analysis!

And to think this was a "simplified" version of Peter Mennin's Symphony No. 5 - M3. Allegro tempetuoso Very similar - starts different but has (almost) the same main theme . Listen to both and compare. I have never heard the Symphony version plaiyed by a wind band since the UofMN had it transcribed for the CBE in the late 60s. Maybe it was a condition that allowed it to be transcribed. I would love to hear the band version played again.

Correct, it’s a paraphrase of some of his other music and generally falls in line with a lot of his other music works. He has a very distinct sound and means of creating music, but as much as I love Mennin he fails to reach beyond this type of music and explore more.

Very influenced by Schuman! Lots of George Washington Bridge vibes. Excellent analysis.

Ethan Blackburn Good ear, Ethan! Mennin and Schuman were both on faculty at Juilliard so I’m sure they discussed writing for band and one copied the other haha just my hunch

Anthony O'Toole makes sense. You heard Schuman's symphony 3?

Thanks for uploading. NB discrepancy at m.88 ( 3:55 ): The last melody note is played as a D in the recording (i.e. last interval heard is a descending M3rd) but it's written E (descending M2nd). I wonder which is correct. I like the M3rd. It makes for a stronger cadence before the chordal section that follows.

Stephen Bertino i heard that also when preparing this video and spent more time than I’d like to admit on the note... in the end i went with the ink! Great ears though, thanks for the comment; glad someone else heard that as well (I’m not crazy)

@@AnthonyOTooleMusic It's not like we can compare it to its return which starts augmented. It never makes it to that cadence.
@stephenbertino83734 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, the restatement breaks off at m.133 (no tie) and goes from E to D across that bar. Hmmmm.... LOL
@stephenbertino83734 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyOTooleMusic I wonder if it's a countermelody by m.88, because that statement is extended. The two earlier countermelodies have M3rd cadences.
@stephenbertino83734 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyOTooleMusic I think I've got it now: The last 5 notes of mm.87-88 should be rhythmic augmentation of the m.36 melody; augmented by one eighth-note and transposed up a M2nd. This creates a dramatic effect when the last note of m.88 is "cut short" by m.89's chordal stuff. Fennell plays the M3rd too. I imagine Mennin was involved in that recording but maybe not.

Thank you for this. I feel like most band people don't really appreciate this piece. ps 5:51 extra timpani note for free.
