This kind of podcast is right up my alley! Subscribing. Both HS & PJ have remained relatively silent about what the problem was & the official explanation for opposing creative differences seems to be exactly that. We know that PJ preferred an epic, sweeping orchestral score, obviously resulting in what JNH delivered. During the bts production diary featuring HS's scoring sessions, we saw how many ethnic & exotic percussion instruments were utilized. Perhaps PJ felt that HS's score leaned more tribal than old-fashioned romantic in style. The other theory that the orchestral cues pushed too far into period is also possible. Maybe both, which would have devastated the whole process because you can't alter & tweak it completely once you're 4 days into an insanely complex & expensive recording session. I seem to remember the HS cues appearing online as an "inspired by" project, which are completely absent today...or maybe I'm confusing it for another rejected score. I'm appreciative that discussion of other rejected works were talked about at length. Certainly, one thinks immediately about Alex North's "2001" cues amongst many others. Yes, Goldsmith is a good example, as some of his noteworthy omitted scores were "Legend" & one of his final projects "Timeline." Fortunately, they are available to listen to. I also recall Alan Silvestri being rejected for "Mission Impossible," David Arnold replaced by John Williams for "The Patriot," & the infamous roasting of Lalo Schifrin's "Exorcist," which director William Friedkin proclaimed was "mariachi music" before hurting the master tapes out the window! [*urban legend?] The falling out of Hitchcock & Hermann is very unfortunate. Sometimes, these blow-ups become mended after time, as in the cases of James Horner & Jim Cameron ("Aliens") and Danny Elfman & Tim Burton ("Nightmare Before Christmas").

Rejecting Walton - '"Walton was weighed in the balance and found wanting''. Big call!

I personally think this is James Newton Howard's best. Big fan of his score for the Fugitive, too
