Actually, just the opposite for me. They thought it was love...I knew that was most definitely not healthy, mature, natural love. Why it didn't and could have never worked. He had an extremely distorted, toxic, and unhealthy view of what real love is or feels like. A shame really but no convincing him otherwise, to him, as you said...he would fight you tooth and nail to convince you that it was love he was actually feeling.
