I am Indian. My wife is East German, having grown up behind The Wall. I remember watching, in America, that fateful day in Nov 89 as the wall came down. 13 years before I met her. Our love was sparked by the music of the Scorpions. 2 children, and a lifetime later, we are in a different place, but those times will live with me forever.

I was stationed in Augsburg from 88-91; I can’t describe how surreal it was at the time and how beautiful it was that less than a month after, we were able to drive into Eastern European countries on a long weekend pass. I remember a friend and I driving from Augsburg to Prague for a long weekend. The people there were awesome and so happy.

I heard this song for the first time on the in-flight entertainment system on the way home from my first of many trips to Russia. I had tears streaming down my face. It was 1990 and I had literally just walked down to Gorky Park myself. I experience the wind of change on that trip, talking to many folks and falling in love with the Russian people. It was a hopeful time and really beautiful to meet and interact with wonderful people after being cut off from each other for so many decades. I am profoundly saddened that the promise of that time has become so tainted with disappointment in the years since. I am also saddened that so many here in the west are hating on the Russian people when it is their current government that is so onerous, not them. Russian people, just like most of the people I met in the 34 countries I made it to during my years of extensive travel, want basically the same things we do: for their children to be safe and grow up to a good life, to have food and shelter, to be able to spend time enjoying family and friends, to have a purposeful existence and to have peace in their country. Please don't hate on people when it's their government that tends to mess things up. We should know.

1983 was a scary year to be an American teenager (I'm 56 now), and when 1989 came, I was completely baffled. What just happened??? We went from being on the edge of nuclear annihilation to a reunified Germany? It seemed so sudden. It took a long time to sink in for me. I had German friends telling me in 1987 that there were plans to reunify Germany, and they thought it would be happening soon. I blew it off. Impossible! We couldn't even get Mr. Gorbachev to tear down that wall. How could Germany reunify? My head was spinning. Poland really started things, but then everywhere else it happened so fast, one nation after another, then suddenly there was not only a reunified Germany, but no more Soviet Union? Russia was a democracy??? Jesus Jones and Scorpions gave me something to hold onto. It was so powerful I cried with joy when I heard those songs, especially Wind of Change, because Scorpions were Germans, living that dream firsthand. Jesus Jones was like me, an observer looking on in wonder. In the 80s, the Cold War wasn't an event, it was just reality. It was how things were and would always be, I thought. The end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany are proof that anything is possible, absolutely anything, if we really want to make it happen, and with a little luck.

At a tender 12 years old, my school friends & I were scared of 2 potential things...dying of AIDS & a nuclear holocaust. Neither of these happened, Thank the Lord. We learned sexual responsibility at school and...more importantly..the cold war ended. One day, Jew will embrace Arab, Muslim will embrace Christian, there will be no more divisions between creed, colour, race, gender, sexual orientation or opinion. Whoever you are? Who ever has given their precious time to read this? Let's make PEACE not WAR. Life is a tiny shaft of light in a, sometimes, immensity of darkness. Thankfully some musics prevail through time, like the magnificent classical music of the masters .Any truly memorable music will go on for ever as long as there are people to listen . I explore most musical genres irrespective of the language and culture, and listen to just about everything I can get my ears around. All the music we have lived through since the 60's will become the classical music of the future. and yet there are some (like a colleague of mine) who still equate this man with the evil USSR. and sadly enough Russia and other eastern european countries could not handle democracy nor could they overcome the power of oligarchy and authoritarianism. even our old friend Boris Yeltsin succumbed to it in the end. RIP all them peoples.

Mikhael Gorbachev was truthful but US turned out to be a traitor expanding Nato towards east breaking the peace agreement and endangering world peace.

The Scorpions will always be an iconic band, and this song is my favorite by them. Its tune is so haunting and the lyrics take me back to my teens, when the Berlin Wall finally came down.

Yes! Born in our times yet destroyed in our times! We witnessed its Birth and its Death. We were beholden then to do the Right thing and We did! Take Courage in that!

Life is full of unsolved mysteries, riddles, puzzles, conundrums and unanswered questions. Amongst the biggest is how is it that Scorpions are not in the Rock n Roll Hall of fame???????

Forever an important and moving song, this orchestrated version with the LSO was beautiful! Klaus’ voice is still as good as ever. The Scorpions still remain one of my favourite heavy metal bands! Peace and love to all!
