I would say a positive quality about Jake Lomata from Raging Bull would be his grit and determination, also the film I would say isn't really meant to sympathize with Lomata but more so for the supporting cast like his brother or wife. In this regard I believe its like There Will be Blood, a protagonist who is utterly devious but who's determination is grand to watch as he plows through more moral side characters.\

I only watched The Age Of Innocence for the first time last year and watched it a few times since. I was surprised how great it was i think its top tier Scorcese, top 5 for ne.

Shutter Island has a hidden layer which I think ya both missed :) With the ending they leave open the possibility (and they even allude to it throughout the film) that the main character is NOT crazy and has been taken to a concentration camp

Its funny you guys enjoyed the Aviator so much - I should have given it more of a chance because when I was a kid I couldnt pay attention to even a second. But as Ryan goes on to say, yeah Howard Hughes is kind of a big deal. I may have to do my own retrospective

I get that as a kid you might not like it. I always blew it off because I felt like a big Hollywood biopic was an odd choice for Scorsese. I'd give it a rewatch, it's got the same maximalist chaotic energy as Wolf of Wallstreet. I'd rank those two close, and better than his other diCaprio films.

guys all u had 2 do was use some built in cpu annotate feature to draw Ryan’s name on the screen in rlly bad handwriting at the bottom/top (anywhere there’s space) & write “A” or “B” when he disagreed with a ranking & then draw a shitty arrow to what movie it was. Then we all win

Im so here for these kinds of videos - I even would say theres something charming about glimpsing the production process. But I cant help but feel the early conversation of how this should work could have been done before recording.... To me, that's a solid ranking, except for 2 or 3 movies : Raging Bull is too low, it should probably be S, or at least A. Cape Fear is probably a bit too high, a B or a C seems more suitable for it. Taxi Driver should at least be in A, if you consider its cultural impact. And finally, Bringing out the Dead is an underrated masterpiece and deserves a solid A. (by the way, unless you did it on purpose, you mispelled Scorsese's name for the title of the video, it's Scorsese, not Scorcese) Additionnaly, as you mentionned, even C or D tier Scorsese's films are really, really good. I believe Coppola is right when he says Scorsese is the world's greatest living filmmaker Great video guys, thanks!

Another aspect to view Raging Bull from is as a story about Masculinity at its very extreme and Jake is the ultimate personification of toxic masculinity to the point he throws away everything to prove in his own mind he's a man (or what a man by that period meant)

I feel the exact opposite about Casino. I just really like that 90's period, and those movies remind me a lot of de Palma. I don't like Goodfellas at all, it's my least favorite Scorsese film. I feel the same way about it as you do for Raging Bull. To me, I can't connect to the guy at all and I don't have any motivation to care. Going back to de Palma, GF and Scarface are supposed to be the essential gangster movies. Scarface is a comic book movie, GF is just some boring generic mob guy.

I don't usually comment on this but you should go to movie jail for giving Raging bull a B. Especially for the reasons you did. It's an exploration of a conolex and angry character, it doesn't need to have something cool or relatable to make him interesting.
