As a Highlander, I found the Mackmyra Björksav to be wonderfully innovative and delicious. Its sweetness comes in waves, similar to the sensation of wading in the sea and unexpectedly finding a patch of warm water.

I have a lot of whiskies from non-traditional regions. I like these because they expand the stylistic range of their prototype. In the United States, I find a lot of single malts from many places around the world. Penderyn is good - I have the Madeira cask finish. From India, the entry level single malt from Amrut is a good value. High Coast is another good distillery from Sweden. They have a range of offerings with varying levels of wood and peat. From Belgium, the producers of the well known beer Gouden Carolus make a single malt from the same mashbill as the beer, and it tastes a lot like the beer. From the Calvados-producing region of Normandy, Le Breuil makes a youthful, fruity single malt that is somewhat reminiscent of the local brandy. From Australia, Starward has a range of interesting offerings. Nova, their entry level product, is pleasant but rather light. Octave Barrels, at 48% ABV, has a lot more flavor and complexity. From Arizona, Del Bac makes an interesting single malt, called Dorado, that is smoked with mesquite wood. Balcones, in Texas, has a range of single malts. Their entry level product is good, but their single barrel range is more interesting. I have a single barrel cask strength store pick with a 59 month age statement, which is a very long time in Texas. The wood is strong in this one, and it has that characteristic Texas funk. Outside of the single malt category, I don't find all that much. The only ones I have encountered recently are some corn whiskies from Mexico. These are worth watching. Distillers in Mexico are using indigenous varieties of corn, and they sometimes use production techniques associated with tequila and mezcal. The flavors they are getting are truly unique. Abasolo and Sierra Norte are widely available in the United States and not too expensive.

Thanks Heather... a lot to unpack there! Sadly, aside from the High Coast (which is quite pricey), I don't have access to the whiskies you've mentioned above. I've been very curious about American single malts since they've surged in popularity in recent years. Even big-brand stuff like Balcones isn't available here, although hopefully the Diageo buyout will give them wider distribution. Sounds like Mexico is a place to watch. Tequila and mezcal are certainly coming up in the world. Cheers! 🥃

@@Gwhisky I hope the Diageo buyout doesn't ruin Balcones. Getting wider distribution would be a good thing, but as far as whisky production goes, Diageo would be smart to leave well enough alone and let the people there keep doing what they have been doing.

@Heather Harrison Totally agree. Would be less interested in trying it if the whiskies get the usual Diageo treatment.

Hi Geoff, had a few world whiskies ( Welsh, German, Swedish ) and I did like an IB Mackmyra called kungstorv( kings peat). Basically everything is Swedish, the oak for the barrels, barley, peat and juniper branches (both used for drying the malted barley).only 43% mind but a decent dram. . Slàinte Geoff for this somewhat different list video. Enjoyed it 👍

Interesting take on M&H's. Usually our taste profiles match to a large extent. I did not care much for the M&H bottles at all. Had a few of them recently including the Apex bottlings. I found them to be very gimmicky. Penderyn has potential. Incidentally, the best thing I have had from them is a dark chocolate available at their distillery store. Mackmyra, now they are doing some crazy stuff and some of them work. Omar has some solid stuff. Surprisingly, I found a few on the shelves at a local New Jersey store. Pennsylvania, as usual has none of these at their "premium collection" state stores. A tad bit expensive, but solid stuff. Kavalan is definitely among the best in world whiskies. I am carefully rationing my 3 solist whiskies. Among Indian whiskies, the best I have had would be the Amrut Aatma 2012 single cask 7 years, in ex-oloroso. That was simply divine. Balcones are making some good whiskies. Their Texas single malt, single barrel releases are all really good. Lots of good things happening in the whisky world. Good video and quite apt because more people need to look beyond the world of Scotch. Cheers!

This particular APEX bottle as well as a recent Watt Whisky IB from them have sold me on the profile. Very different, but I think they've got a lot of potential. Agree about Penderyn... also good potential. As for Mackmyra, they're stuff doesn't always work, but I love that they try a lot of the things that scotch isn't allowed to. Kavalan is indeed world class. The best Indian whisky I ever tried was an Amrut single cask. Absolutely mind blowing. Thanks for watching! 🥃

Nice one Geoff! Mackmyra should have their own list they do so many brilliant stuff. I tasted the AI one where Mackmyra and Microsoft collaborated to create a whisky using AI giving it desired tasting notes, how cool is that! I had a Nantou from SMWS matured in heavily charred casks which was just phenomenal! You're spot on with M&H, 3 whisky novices all loved the dead sea version and Penderyn does have some good stuff. I don't think you'll be surprised that I recommend Cotswolds to you, again 😁Their peated one comes in at cask strength and matured in ex-Bowmore cask (their master distiller used to be at Bowmore) and is just beautiful. One of those rare times when using an ex-peated cask works out. Cheers!

My current world whiskies are a few minis from the Glina range (a local German distillery), the South African corn whisky Bain's, and a 10-year old sherried Belgian whisky named Filliers. The Glina minis are all hit or miss (mostly miss) due to being too young and their distillate has a weird note that I really don't get along with. Their best whisky is a cask strength 10-year old that was matured in ex-Port, ex-Bordeaux and ex-cherry wine casks - it's different and funky, but quite interesting and worth a try, unlike their 40% entry level. Bain's is a lovely corn whisky with caramel and banana notes. A perfect summer whisky, either neat or over ice. The Filliers is a sherry grenade, coming in a beautiful bottle at 43% and smells of chocolate fudge, tasting of christmas spices and fruit cake. It's a bit expensive, but bridges the gap between beginner and premium whisky quite well.

I had a quick look at Master of Malt and it seems they have switched from Omar to Yushan as far as Nantou whiskies are concerned, but Amazon still have the Omars. Prices are about £65 for the bourbon cask and £70 for the sherry cask, but I managed to get a sherry cask Omar at auction for £44.23 including fees and shipping. Very nice! If we take Scotland, Ireland, America, Canada and Japan as the major players, I have whiskies from 26 other 'world whiskies' countries, so it would be difficult to know where to start with recommendations and some of them are discontinued anyway (e.g. Hammer Head from Czechoslovakia - even the country no longer exists! - and Telser from Liechtenstein - they don't seem to be making whisky any more, though they do do other things), though bottles can still sometimes be bought. As far as Israeli whisky goes: I do have a Milk & Honey bottle, but actually prefer Golani Black from the Golan Heights Distillery. With Penderyn, I think my favourite core bottling is the Madeira Finish (though I don't have one at the moment), with Myth (which I do have) a close second, but they really shine with their Icons of Wales - try Rhiannon, if you get the chance - and distillery exclusives. Oh, and in case you worried I was missing out: I'm currently on my second bottle of Kavalan Vinho Barrique!

We have some good (and also not so good) whiskies here in Brazil. If you have any chance to try single malts from Union Distillery, I would strongly recommend! Other than that, I'm looking forward to try Elsburn from Germany. Cheers!

I have 2 Swiss Single Malts; Johnett 8 y with 44%abv and non-age stated Säntis with 43% abv matured in beer and wine casks; both are unchillfiltered & natural colour. Especially Johnett is just great. Another single malt, really good value, is from Spain; DYC 15 y, unfortunately this one is 40%abv, probably chill filtered and colour added; but I got it for 35 Euro only, can't complain :) Finally I have a 3y young single malt from Poland; Wild Fields, nstural colour, unchillfiltered and 46%abvI still have not opened the bottle yet, it was recommended by a Polish friend. Slainte!

Difficult topic. Suggestion for next review Geoff - Out of this world affordable whiskies! You’ve probably done it already. I’ll have to go through your back catalogue I suppose. Keep them coming, always worth 10 minutes even if they’re 15 minutes long! Oops

For me, the Milk & Honey I tried was just awful lol. Couldn't even finish it. The Madeira from Penderyn would be my favourite of the few that I've tried from them. For Mackmyra, I quite enjoyed the SvenskEk (that Gront Te sounds dynamite). As for our home and native land(!!), I personally never liked Canadian whiskey (not a Rye fan which most Cdn whiskey seems to be) but some new distilleries making single malts like Two Brewers and Shelter Point are creating some great stuff. Probably tough to find that out there though eh?
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky Жыл бұрын
I've got a bottle of Madeira on the go at a friend's place at the moment and it's good stuff! Can't say I've tried the SvenskEk, although I've seen it sold locally. One to watch out for. Shelter Point or Two Brewers are nowhere to be found in Asia. I don't even see them when I go back home to Montreal. I couldn't even find any in Toronto, either. 🥃

I had a Penderyn back in 2015 (IIRC?) and it was just bland. Nothing offensive, but nothing memorable either. My brother had brought it with him from duty free as a gift, but it was a bit of a let down so we and and a friend necked the lot in a night sat in Plaza Sol BCN.

My first Penderyn was about 10 years ago, and it was just... weird. To be fair, I've never had one that's blown me away, but I've only tried a handful. Their more recent Sherrywood and Madeira entry-level options aren't bad! 🥃
