Glendalough 7 Year Mizunara Oak Irish Whiskey

Glendalough (/ˌɡlɛndəˈlɒx/; Irish: Gleann Dá Loch, meaning 'valley of two lakes'[2]) is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. From 1825 to 1957, the head of the Glendalough Valley was the site of a galena lead mine. Glendalough is also a recreational area for picnics, for walking along networks of maintained trails of varying difficulty, and also for rock-climbing. A beautiful place to visit.

Thanks guys. I had an interesting experience with their regular release. It was excellent and very oak-forward on the initial cork pop. Revisited when it got down further down and it levelled off and was not very good. But hey, it’s cheap!

For me Mizo is one of the the hardest profiles to identify. I get a kinda nutty finish and a great earthy flavor. Let’s tessssssttttt iiiiiiitttttt!

Both Yamazaki 12yo and 18yo are similar in casks used for maturation, 4 types of casks: Ex-bourbon, Ex-sherry, Virgin American Oak and Mizunara. I do not think either expressions were 'finished'. I enjoy the Mizunara influence on whisk(e)y, I bought, when it was just Duty Free exclusive (not any more), the 12yo Chivas Regal Mizunara. However, my favorite Mizunara matured whisky is the Ichiro's Malt MWR (Mizunara Wood Reserve).

Their 13yr Mizunara (sourced) was their best bottling to date. The issue with Glendalough is that they haven't been clear as to whether they are blending sourced stuff with their distillate. Wish they were a bit more transparent on where its coming from.

They have a new distillery I think. But the older casks are bought from Cooley I think.

One of the first Irish whiskeys I bought was a 7 year Glendalouch with a Black Pitts Porter finish. Very nice, very tasty with no off notes. A little fruity and creamy. I think the porter added a burnt caramel but in a good way.. Easy 86. It's also a 46% single malt. Must not be a rare cask, that Black Pitts cause the bottle cost me under $45.

I really enjoyed all the references in this one. I do remember the button fly jeans and I was singing bird bird bird bird is the word. Anyway, thanks for this review. I feel really good that I got the last bottle in the county for $100. The cashier was looking at me funny as she saying you’re paying $100 for seven year Irish. I said yeah I’m really curious about this one and the cask.

The Yamazaki 12 does have some Mizunara in it. I had a bottle of the original Glendalough 13 Mizunara finish a few years back. I liked it but thought I could get better Scotch for the money. That's pretty much how I feel about all Irish whisky. When I take the price into consideration I'm pretty certain I'd feel the same way about this one. I'm tempted now though Cheers fellas. WT

From Bart. First things first, love Ralfy and his tasting skills are better then mine. Haven’t watched that episode but I’ve been saying for a while that I prefer their core range most of the time. The Dark Cove was awesome but the core range is always there and I dig it. Bart
