Rashford provides England a different attacking dimension on the left by running in behind defenders. This prevents the opposition defenses from holding a very high line. The result of this is that Bellingham has more room to work with because the opposition will hold a deep defensive line. Their interchange was also great to watch, I couldn't tell them apart at first glance. Southgate seems to prefer a system that isolates Kane as the only goal threat. Any sane manager would play an attacking quartet of Rashford, Bellingham, Kane, and Saka in a diamond formation. Southgate seems to overthink his team selections.

If he had full confidence in that system he would have used it in a competitive match against Ukraine and did his experiments of playing Maddison on the left in a friendly. A 30-goal and 11 assists left attacking player should be able to walk into any national team without any problem or need for experimentation. I am very sure Rashford will be benched when Grealish is fit, that is the system Southgate seems to prefer. And it is the system I was referring to that seems to isolate Kane as the only potent goal threat.

I'm in my sixties & seen some great English players, from Keegan to Robson to Gerrard, they all often looked as if the pressure of playing for England wasn't too enjoyable.
