Remember, before you post a critical comment - that Rick Steves is not a historian... he is a travel advisor and an excellent one! He may mispronounce a word or two, ha. I would hate to think how it would be if I were to begin to expect for a travel guide or even a movie actor to get the terms related to Louisiana correct. I hear our villages, towns, and cities mis-pronounced all of the time and with good reason- the Cajun French is not familiar to very many at all.

French from France is very different than Cajun french...trust me... just like french from Quebec and Ontario Canada sound a bit different from each other and sounds different from France french. Even when you travel Quebec Canada...you can notice a difference between the french in different regions...but Cajun french is noticeably different. Writing is the same but accents are different...some vocabulary is different.

Hi Tracy. I live I Scotland and have done a lot of travelling here and in England too. Scotland's accomodation generally very expensive if you go by the guidebooks or look online about a place you aren't familiar with. I know loads of amazing places to stay on a shoestring. if you want to message me, i'll give you some info and pointers.

Thomas Telford was Scottish, not British. Otherwise, respect.

And he was a true Scot - "versatile" - not only a brilliant engineer but a poet. One of his best friends was Robert Burns. Telford, as I recall came from a country home near Langdale.

@@3535-j5z Scots are not English. Period. The English - Angles and Angle -Saxons - are Germanic, as is the royal family. Scots are a mixture of Vikings, some northern English folks, and Celts. Very different cultures. Scots passionately value free public education.

It's pronounced Seltic not Keltic. And it's not 'the Rangers' just Rangers.

I do love his tours - honestly, I think he's great. But.... he should learn how to pronounce the names properly. Having said that, I live in the U.S. and notice that some names are difficult for Americans to grasp - especially Edinburgh. It always comes out as Edinbro. Another one ( unrelated to this video) is Wimbledon. They always say Wimpleton.

"Europe is uniting, so all these minority states need an excuse to wave their little flags." I guess you'd have to be an American to say this out loud on a stage without realizing how historically wrong, degrading and insulting this is.
@lorddaver1935
@lorddaver1935 6 жыл бұрын
That's the trouble. No offense is ever meant, but it is offensive. It could be avoided altogether with a little thought. "...all these minority states need an excuse to wave their little flags..." Are you seriously suggesting that an American of average intelligence can't figure out what a Scot my find offensive about that statement?

If he had said that, then I would agree with you. However, he didn't say that. The difference is significant.

An American who cannot even pronounce our places names correctly giving a talk on visiting Scotland. You'd think that anyone taking on this task would do their research first.

You treat Scotland like an afterthought. "If you don't have time for Scotland and you are doing England..." @ 2:52. Yeah, just great, I mean who would want to waste time visiting Scotland without having seen all that England has to offer first? You can visit Scotland and not go anywhere else you know. And, for the love of God learn how to pronounce the place names properly. It reflects very badly upon you that you trade on being an expert yet you can't pronounce the name of our capital city. Then, to suggest that you see the best of Scotland on your little tour, which goes nowhere near the north west highlands, is just ludicrous. Do some proper research please.

Did you not listen to the video? He's not saying to only go to Scotland as an afterthought, but if you have extra time during a trip to England, consider adding Edinburgh for a day because of the proximity. He outlined a 10-day itinerary for *just* Scotland at the beginning of the video and spends 30 minutes detailing the parts he loves. By all means, be a little salty that he neglected several of the best spots (for example, nw highlands, isle of mull, isle of skye), but don't make out as if he's diminishing Scotland's importance by including it as part of the itinerary for a nearby country.

Dear Mr. Mills, As Americans we do fail in our Scottish pronunciation. Sorry. To be fair, it would be a challenge for you to pronunce some our American places.

Irma, please ignore Tom Mills and his rudeness. A lot of Scots seem to think that the whole world ought to know how everything is pronounced here...it's like some sort of entitlement they feel they have. But, it's okay when they go elsewhere and do not know how to pronounce things. Rude people, seriously.

The_Red_Queen Thanks Red Queen. Ironically, it took me sooo long to find this one disagreeable Scott, Tom mills, that I can't belive I finally found him. Everybody else in Scotland had grace and manners, like you. Tom won't stop me. I have to go back to Scotland. I love it. It keeps calling me back. 💖

Only if you are a football/soccer fan! You are dead right about Edinborrow - I can't understand where that pronunciation comes from. He gets it right now and then but relapses! Surely reekie = smoky rather than smelly? (I'm a Celt - hard C please - from Cornwall.)
