I was at the final game vs Norway. Drove up from Berkshire on the day, watched the match then drove home again overnight as I had to be at work by 3pm the next day. Well worth it to see us qualify for Italia 90!

That Yugoslavia team was incredible at the time. They definitely should have been among the favourites for the WC. Mo Johnston was and still is my favourite Scotland player of a ll time.

Everyone remembers the win v France and the late winner against Cyprus but looking at the campaign as a whole its a bit surprising we actually qualified. Pumped away by both Yugoslavia and France. Dropped points at home to Norway and Yugoslavia. Most of our points came against Cyprus and since they got 1 point it seems like most of the other teams beat them twice as well.

SCOTLAND QUALIFIED FOR THE 1990 WORLD CUP? I'M GOBSMACKED 😮
@TonyBananas101Ай бұрын
Yes imagine a second tier ranked nation that had qualified for the previous 4 world cup finals - unlike England - qualifying for Italia 90. You wouldn't understand it unless you're a mental retard or a foetus at the time or both which you obviously are.
@newrybhoy74Ай бұрын
Though he did score against Scotland here for the French en route to Scotland qualifying for Iralia 90 not France. This reminds you that though a star in the bang average game in England for Leeds & Man Utd. Cantona vastly overated never did it in either Europe for club or Internationally for France. What a qualifying campaign this was for Scotland
@wannabe353Ай бұрын
I disagree about Cantona being over-rated. The reason he never "did it" for France at international level was because he permanently lost his place in the French national team after he called each of those in charge of the French team "idiot" - where maybe the management were a "joke" at the time in his opinion, and he got kicked out of the team just for being honest with them about that. Regarding Europe, if Cantona had stayed on at Man Utd for a few more seasons rather than suddenly retiring at age 31, he surely would've been involved in them winning the Champion's League in the 98-99 season.

Yugoslavia, we're the best team in this group by a country mile. They played better than everybody else, were way more consistent and individually, and the most talented. Their problem was that they were not the most clinical.

This was my first World Cup qualification that I remember (I was 8) we (Yugoslavia) had a great team going into Italy 1990. Stojkovic was a genius on the ball, Susic ran the midfield singlehandedly, Katanec was so good on the ball Savicevic and Prosinecki breaking into the team. Great times for the national team shame it was the last one for Yugoslavia.

@daviebananas1735Ай бұрын
What are you basing this on? He was the Aberdeen goalie as they overtook the old firm and shone against the biggest names in Europe. He then went to Man Utd where he was first voice goalie for two years until he lost his place after the FA cup final in 1990, when he was 32. After this he lost his place for Scotland for years until he rebuilt his career with Hibs.

One of my abiding memories of Leighton was in a friendly against Spain at Hampden that finished 0-0,and Leighton kept out Butregueno and Co with worldie after worldie save.Although he's equally (or more)remembered for clangers in big games.

Scotland heading for their 4th World Cup finals in a row...then they lost to Costa Rica. I was renting a room in a woman's house and as I'm half-Scottish I was getting upset about the match. "It's only a game" she said. I could have thrown her across the room! Some women just don't get it.😢

Sadly, Scotland started the qualifying campaign very strongly and then faded badly, a friendly win over Argentina excepted, all the way through to the finals. Not helped by the manager Andy Roxburgh's constant downplaying of expectations, negative tactics and talking up of the opposition, in constrast to the positive mental approach of jack charlton with players of similar standard with Ireland. The fortunate away win against Cyprus was hailed as some sort of great achievement because France drew there and the return game built up as some kind of massive challenge.

Apparantly at italia 90 scotlands head coaches roxburgh and brown were duped by a costa rican taxi driver who said the costa rica goalkeeper was a liability at crosses coming into the box. Foolishly roxburgh listened to this advice and the costa rica keeper claimed every cross with ease. Literally the scots played into costa ricas hands,pun intended,before losing to a late cayaso goal. So scotland were tactically outfoxed by a taxi driver 😂
