Wonderful video, Bruce. My second Mum told me about Robert Burns when I was seventeen. I was too young to appreciate him at the time. As I've gotten older that's all changed. He really is the Bard of Scotland. Listening to Ae Fond Kiss gets me in the feels every time. All the best to you on your tour!

I wonder if John Paul Jones' sister, Janet Paul and watchmaker husband William Taylor (residents of Dumfries at the time) were subscribers to the building of the Dumfries theatre? John Paul Jones died in Paris in July 1792. Around the time of the theatre's September opening (and during the French revolution) Janet made her way to Paris to collect her brother's belongings.

I was intrigued by the mention of Thomas Muir and watched the video :Scotland's Greatest Hero" but since that was several months ago I thought I'd use this more recent video to ask my question. Do you / or anyone know if Thomas Muir is any relation to John Muir (known in the US as the Father of National Parks). John Muir (1838-1914) was born in Dunbar Scotland and became a naturalist in the California / Oregon area "author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States." His story is interesting, and he was an admirer of Robert Burns and although he emigrated to America with his family "Muir never forgot his roots in Scotland. He held a strong connection with his birthplace and Scottish identity throughout his life and was frequently heard talking about his childhood spent amid the East Lothian countryside."

It's so cool seeing the real cabin behind you. The Burns society in Atlanta,GA, USA, has an exact duplicate that they built in the early 20th century from plans drawn up by an architect near Ayrshire. But the drive and parking areas are gravel there, not cobbles.

If memory serves he sent this before "hookin up" with Highland Mary.....talkin bout Mary-doll, looking forward to yer show on the 1st September in Dunoon burgh Hall just across the castle gardens ("Cassie gardens" to local yokes like masel) from the statue of Mary looking longingly across the Clyde towards her beloved Rabbie. Furthermore during the ruckus in the theatre Rabbie reportingly said "HO!!! Marquis rules this, ya bass!" To add a bit more historical perspective to Burns' "The Rights of Woman." In 1789 "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen," was published in France. Thomas Paine borrowed from that title and from the content for his, "The Rights of Man" defending the principles of the French Revolution in 1791. Also in 1791, Olympe de Gouges, a feminist French playwright and pamphleteer, published "Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Citizen in response to the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Burns' sympathies being what they were, he may have been aware of it or even read it. As with so many supporters of the ideals of the French Revolution, Olympe de Gouges became a victim of the guillotine in 1793.

Interesting to hear that "god save the unelected parasite" started (and continues?) as a nationalists (britnat) song, sung on the equivalent of football terraces.
