Hi! Brazilian 737 pilot here. Quick corrrections on your video! FAB stands for FORÇA AÉREA BRASILEIRA, or Brazilian Air Force, and it is NOT the same as the american FAA! the equivalent of FAA here, meaning the regulatory authority here is called ANAC! wich stands for civilian aviation national agency! A branch within the Brazilian Air Force is responsible for air crashes investigation, called CENIPA. CENIPA is the Equivalent of americas NTSB!

@@dpfreedman I love Hoover. But both he and Blancolirio - another favorite of mine - misreported the possible prison sentence. Which is fine; they were only repeating what all the news outlets were saying. That’s all the more reason I appreciated this channel getting it right. 128 years makes for a great headline but makes no sense to anyone remotely familiar with federal sentencing guidelines. Edit: On second thought I may be confusing another report I saw with Blanco - so I could be wrong there. But Hoover and a few others went with what was being erroneously reported. I don’t blame them a bit. That’s what was being reported everywhere. Except here.

@@Codehead3 Ehm.... Maybe you need to see the Air crash investigations episode i saw. It was with a Male captain and female copilot. In a similar plane. They were put in a holding pattern for a long time. That is how they accumulated ice on the wings. The boots in the wings did not clear the ice. They had NO warnings..... and they had training to avoid situations like these. BUT: IF the plane itself does not warn you, you will most likely find out when it is too late. You say they are trained and have instrumentation and warning lights. Go have another look at that crash i am talking about. If you want, i can try to look back at my history to see what flight it was. I know it was a male pilot and female copilot. They were tired and they wanted to land. They were put in a holding pattern. Ice built up. Then they were cleared and the sjizzle start hitting the fan.

That ATR seemed to be coming down in a flat spin, intact, with engines operating. That would seem to rule out inflight structural failure. Severe icing would seem to be the front running hypothesis, at this point. Now can they gather evidence to support this into becoming a theory? In a spin, doesn’t an aircraft rotate around a center of rotation offset laterally from the center of gravity? If the nose points significantly downward in a spin, it’s a normal spin, right? If the nose stays up nearly level with the horizon, it’s a flattened or flat spin. For example, in a left spin, some portion of the right wing is not stalled but still flying forward because of the rotation, somewhat like a helicopter rotor blade. The left wing is fully stalled and mushing downward through the air. The center of the aircraft’s rotation is probably somewhere over that left wing. Heavy objects like engines on the wing can make it worse because they add to the rotational momentum and when providing thrust can add to the rotational speed. That’s why, to my understanding, spin recovery action calls for reducing engine thrust to minimum, idle throttle. You need to stop the rotation. Continuing thrust or increasing it is what often turns a normal spin into a flat spin which can become impossible to be recovered from. Am I correct?

if they can get enough flight data, they can prove the reduction in performance to be consistent with the buildup of ice, pairing that with the (also usually recorded) outside temperature, and the picture of pitch changes made by the pilots/autopilot consistent with the rest, can pretty conclusively prove you are dealing with an icing event... why an icing event ended in a flat spin, that's a little bit more guesswork, since a pilot should know what he is doing and not let it get that far... this is a very trained and simulated scenario... maybe the voice recording or fatigue history will explain something.

Bloomquist did not have a pilot's license, however he had thousands of hours of flight time around his family property. The aircraft was registered in his father's name. They maintained the aircraft together at their home in Tennessee. Since a J-3 Cub is considered a light-sport aircraft, with one seat, and no commercial use, he was not required by law to obtain a pilot's license.

@@FloridaManRacer The Piper J-3 Cub does indeed have two tandem seats, and in it's day was a Primary Flight trainer (that constitutes commercial use) and was required to receive Annual FAA Inspections to remain airworthy. It doesn't qualify as an Ultralight aircraft. Even though it can meet many of the LSA conditions, the FAA does NOT allow it to be Re-Certificated as a Light Sport Aircraft, and it DOES require the pilot to have an FAA Sport Pilot Certificate. Of course, as long as you don't get caught...

The description of spin initiation at 6:43 mentions "incorrect rudder control" as a cause. This is true, but this is the perfect spot to go immediately into icing. Asymmetrical wing icing (including uneven removal of ice by the deicing system) can produce the same yawing motion as "incorrect rudder control". That is a connection to the "test pilot" analogy. The pilot may have been flying an airplane with unknown and unstable yaw forces.

Great episode this week (wish you didn't have so much to talk about though). Comment on the flat spin - icing is obviously a consideration, but not just wing icing. Fuselage icing could put the cg in a weird position, making a spin recovery impossible. Nice review of stalls, but spins are a little different, and unfortunately not as heavily trained. The recovery cone is beneath the aircraft, and the first step of a generic recovery boldprint is "P - power" - get that nose tracking down. The Pitts and Extra guys who fly the crazy 17-turn spins "add" power to flatten the spin until they're ready to recover. A P51 will recover in 2 turns at idle but takes 10000 feet with power. So - stall: power ON, spin: power OFF. A too far aft cg will hinder that (icing). And a Pilot's call to ADD power in a spin will just flatten it out, rendering recovery impossible. Every pilot should get comfortable with spinning, even if it's just to recognize the onset cues and danger area for impending stall/spin... probably have less in the pattern, too.

Icing is very easy to deal with in turboprops if you are attentive, proactive and understand weather. You must also use the correct climb, descent and holding profiles for the aircraft your in. What they should say is that many pilots don’t know doing, it’s very hard to get a transport category aircraft in a spin. When an starts a spin there is plenty of warning signs: The nose is very high on the horizon or artificial indicator. The controls are very far aft. The indicated airspeed is low. You have a chime and your controls are vibrating. The controls will start a push. If you don’t see these signs and know how to react please don’t be flying for the airlines. Ice did not overwhelm this aircraft, the pilots may have been flying too slow for the icing conditions or incorrect climb speed.

PFffft. The ATR is infamous for having a leading edge de ice boot and airfoil defect that in supersaturated icing conditions quickly turns the AC from flyworthy to a falling brick in just a minute or two. NEVER FLY ON THIS AC in anything but clear dry air. Never into any type cloud at all. A Flat spin is result of loss of lift stall, where the AC fails to go fast enough forward to generate lift. In just a few seconds it crosses over from flying forward, to falling downward. Trying to blame this on any other excuse, is just part of a cover up to blame another bogus cause to get off the hook individual(s) that enabled the situation. Be not fooled by liars.

Those narrow and small wings on these ATR airplanes will increase the potential for change in the low pressure air dynamic on the upper side of the wings when icing occurs, this creates to high levels of low pressure over the ailerons and flaps. What happens then is that this increased level of low pressure initiates or sucks the ailerons and flaps upwards, this leads to loss of control of the airplane! Other high wing 2 engine prop planes like Bombardier/De-Havilland Dash/DHC 6,7 and 8 planes with much wider and longer wings does not have this problems in icing conditions. Everybody within the aviation industry knows that the ATR`s have this problem! Less wing area will tolerate less ice in other words ! These ATR planes was banned by pilots in the USA at one point because of this!

One news agency reported the Scott Bloomquist did not hold an PPL which I find hard to believe. The news agency seemed a little pissed off because they were being restricted to gain access to the crash site because it was private property owned by the Bloomquist family. Doesn't seem like icing on the wing would be an issue, especially with Brazil being so far south.....

Try again at the 35 second mark with your “sound” turned on and unmuted. If you have trouble hearing you can also read the transcript instead.👍🏼

NTSB says initial impact 200 feet short of runway. Then the diagram in the report shows where landing gear left marks, where the nose gear broke etc. the gear was down.
