Straight men don't want to be perceived as gay hence 'homophobic' slang is makes for a good insult. However it doesn't necessarily mean they believe there is anything intrinsically wrong with being homosexual. Likewise most women don't want to perceived as being manly for example, but doesn't mean they hate men. So I think it has been blown out of proportion and misconstrued. If say Messi came out as gay I doubt maybe fans would object to him joining their club on that basis. No one would really care. Leave the politics out of football. Besides those who are genuinely homophobic are their minds really going to be changed by some rainbow banners and armbands?!

@Kri S Not really comparable since people don't generally use racist insults against alternative races (e.g. calling white people niggers etc). Although likewise I believe racism in football is blown out of proportion too. Didn't suggest giving up, I just don't think its such a big issue and should understand the context and environment in which it is said. For example all kinds of insults and threats are shouted at the ref during the match, but there's no actual long term genuine hatred there.

Im not sure why football needs to shunt itself at the forefront of every social issue. As though it’s a basket case for diversity. Female commentators, female lineswomen, female pundits for the champions league who qualify because they’ve won the women’s FA cup with Sheffield Wednesday. I think the next logical step with be a transgender referee, it is the only way to go out of our way to ensure that everybody feels included. Although it’s a great job for someone..yes - let’s appoint someone on 100k with a company car to go around the country searching for homophobic clues to report back to HQ.
