So great to hear from my two long distance financial mentors. I even bought copies of Spend to the End for friends, and Scott’s column Dare to Die Broke was a real eye opener about factoring actual life expectancy into retirement spending. Larry also gave me a free copy of his Maxi software due to my being a minister. Thanks again for your generosity. I laughed when Scott talked about buying a manufactured home in a park where you own the land because that’s exactly what we have done as well. The monthly cost in our park is under $300 including grass cutting, water, sewer, trash, cable TV, and internet. Not to mention Pickleball, tennis, pool, and a small gym. Taxes are a third of our previous house. The park literally across the street is $1200. Good advice, as usual.

I have appreciated Scott Burns’ practical advice for many years.

So glad I stumbled on this. Aside from the fact that he is completely right, Scott Burns reminds me of those funny and very smart brothers with heart who hosted Car Talk on NPR--also MIT grads.

You mention that a total stock market and a total bond index is all that is required for excellent returns in retirement. What is your opinion of utilizing a low cost balanced fund which invests in both components which you suggest?

Interesting that this video was in January of 2023 after a terrible 2022 in the market. 2023 ended up being a wonderful year of gains for those of us in the technology stocks and has continued into the middle of 2024 as of this writing. Artificial intelligence took the headlines and I'm sure even some of Scott's index funds benefitted. But those that had direct ownership of the Ai stocks benefitted far better than the coach potato folks. Will this Ai thing continue? Most likely, and that is the debate for the rest of our senior limited lifetime!
