My band teacher said that this is why we play long tones. He couldn't be more right.

When you have lost something, something you shouldn't have ever been given, something you will never have again in this life... this is how it sounds.

Our band teacher had us listen to this. we would have had to listened to a lecture about why we play long tones. We watched this. now we understand.

I just read that Scott McAllister teaches at Baylor, did he help put this together? I think I can hear the hand of the composer in this eerily deep masterpiece.

It says on his website that he transcribed the piece from a hour-long clarinet concerto. But, I did see this performed a few years ago, and I vaguely remember someone mentioning that he wrote this in mourning for a friend.

This song is mourning his loss of being able to play his instrument, the clarinet, after being involved in an auto accident.
