Werewolves in that show have their power fluctuate based on their mental state. They can become stronger through the wholesome confidence of having their pack stand behind them, but they can also become stronger through being angry psychopaths. That's why Scott was so much stronger than Derek's betas in Season 2, because he was able to form a genuine bond with his human pack, something Derek thought was only possible with other werewolves until Scott repeatedly beat up his betas. And that's why the nadir of Scott's strength came in season 3 and 4, when you had the demon possessing Stiles and killing Allison, and then Scott was forced to inflict the thing he still hated about himself on Liam. Much like the real world, Teen Wolf can be cruel, and so the psychopathic werewolves can tap into their full power easier, but that power comes with a price. The Beast was killed by a normal human with a spear trap. Peter got taken out by Stiles and Jackson using crudely improvised molotovs. Even Deucalion's rampage was ultimately self destructive; it created one new alpha in the world, but in exchange four alpha sparks were lost and Deucalion himself died with no one to inherit his spark, so that he did more damage to the werewolf species than Gerard Argent ever did.

I wish that an editor would add the one shot from Season 1 when Peter forced Scott to shift in the gym and we catch a glimpse of his eyes being red just before going yellow. It made the payoff of him becoming an Alpha all the better knowing that it was hinted at way back then.

That wasn't Scott showing Alpha potential. It was a sign of Peter's influence. Scott in Season 1 was no Alpha, and certainly not at that time. At that point, his strategy for dealing with his lycanthropy was to try and hope it would go away. It was only later that he started willfully using his powers and his human friends started relying on his strength that his potential was planted.

@@Nemo12417 No, but Jeff Davis said it himself in interviews, that was their way of dropping an Easter egg that Scott was going to be an Alpha. Hence, the flash of red before being yellow. Yes, it was showing Peter's dominance forcing the shift, but it was a preview of what was coming according to Jeff. He said it was intentional to flash the red first rather than his eyes just being yellow.

@@pabel893 It was season 1 when Peter had Scott, Stiles, Allison, Jackson, and Lydia trapped in the school. It was the scene where Scott went to find the janitor's keys and Peter in his wolf form forced him to shift.
