I met McCloud at the Dallas Fantasy Fair right after Understanding Comics came out. He was genuinely humble and kind person. He signed my copy of the book and chatted for quite a while. The guy is incredibly intelligent and talented.

Hey, brother! Great review! I’m glad you liked the book and that it spoke to you. The book definitely spoke to me, and I think any artist will connect with it. It really distills the artistic struggle to it’s basic elements. Being an artist is a sacrifice and a compromise no matter how you choose to express that in your life. There’s a spectrum from complete devotion to your art at the expense of all other things, all the way to completely denying your creative urges and focusing entirely on pragmatism. And every single alternative in between. No matter what you choose, you’re giving up something else and it’s hard to be satisfied, when there’s always greener grass somewhere. This book kind of focuses on that first option - giving up everything for your art and exploring that and the ups and downs for the main character. I struggled a lot with these sorts of thoughts in my younger years, and now that I’m older my emotions have settled down a bit and I can actually try to get some things done, but that’s just how I handled it. I look forward to the rest of your chapter reviews. If I remember correctly, the book is pretty engaging all the way through, but I will watch your vids to refresh my memory. Keep up the great work, Rob!

I would love if this was the beginning of Rob's journey discovering there's more than 90s trash or superheroes (glorious though both may be) and diving into the wider artform that is comics :)
