Listened to these again with pleasure, and with more appreciation for their gentle and contemplative nature; very soothing in the Plague Year . . . and, as always, with gratitude for the genius that was Scott Ross.

Thank God for the Assas (neAr Montpellier, France) harpsichord, a work of art in itself and a national treasure -such beautiful sound!

Scott Ross said that he used a variety of harpsichords during his recording of all the Scarlatti keyboard sonatas in order to avoid a "monotony" of sound. Since he lived in France for awhile (near Montpelier?) I wonder if he used the Assas. Would you happen to know?

@@excelsior999 he did extensively. I heard him play the Assas harpsichord in and outside concerts that he gave in the castle church. From what I heard him say this instrument had his preference. I can understand why because the sound is both profound and elegant.

He's very good but Marco Mencoboni and Sergio Vartolo are much better at Frescobaldi. Ross is great for Scarlatti though, I have to say.

Sorry, but no one can compete with Ghielmi's or Mencoboni's interpretations of Frescobaldi's works. The whole thing is so not interesting and the historische aufführungspraxis is neglected, especially with the thrills and mordents. Also the harpsichord is totally not the right one and does not sing at all. At Schola Cantorum Basiliensis we strive to play that sort of repertoaire specifically on the early italian harpsichords, preferably Roberto Livi's copy of Celestini. Try to listen for example Mencoboni's execution of Toccata Seconda by Frescobaldi. You shall understand my point after you hear it.

I will look for that. I have purchased Alessandrini's album which I love. That said (hold that flame please) for the 12 Partite sopra l'Aria di Ruggiero (which is naturally the greatest work of all music), I prefer Rafael Puyana, in no small part because he "improves" it by repeating the Aria at the end, for my untrained ears in another key and that works very well I find. It is available somewhere on KZbin

I never got why Scott Ross is held in such high regard to the point of cult status. Never came across any recording of his that strike me as particularly interesting. Mencoboni's is great though. I prefer the sound of Livi's Guarracino.

Very nice; thanks for posting this. I knew Frescobaldi's work only from an elderly recording of music for brass and organ (or percussion), paired with Giovanni Gabrielli, recorded, I think, in St. Mark's. These pieces certainly are more contemplative than the ones on my LP, but I think they're a fine example of the late Renaissance. While I will confess to a preference for livelier works for brass and organ or percussion, these are lovely in their way and it's too bad to see them condemned as lacking "any redeeming interest." As Prince Orlofsky says, "Chacun a son gout!" I listened to these after Scott Ross' Book 1 of the WTC, and am going on to his Book 2 WTC.

@@melzlink4100 I agree. And it's a great, great tragedy about Scott Ross. The Scarlatti keyboard sonatas are some of my favorites from the Baroque, and I listened to his complete recordings of them twice during very boring weeks at work; they kept me going. He was a fine, fine harpsichordist.

Just a minor point, but I believe that virtually every language and culture has a variant of "Chacun a son gout!". Could some linguist or polyglot confirm this?
