Recently, I've been getting an interesting resurgence of views on this video, as well as comments from people in the "It's just a game, who cares!?" variety. Well, here's the reason why you SHOULD care about this situation, and how it affects Sim Racing as a whole. Scott Speed isn't just some random racing celebrity who enjoyed using iRacing in his leisure time. He was a Spokesperson for iRacing, someone iRacing essentially HIRED as a consultant to bring RallyCross to the industry. He played a major role in bringing iRacing's RallyCross discipline to the sim... So, with him having his status and also the fact that he is, essentially an iRacing spokesperson, that really does hold him to a higher standard of accountability. He has not just his public image to maintain, but also the image of the company that he has promoted as well... To attack another driver on the service that you are a proud supporter of, and then to turn and attempt to emasculate the other driver, then go on and badmouth the user of the service, and then bad mouth the very own service yourself, that's a big no-no... From a marketing standpoint, it is a PR team's nightmare. Thankfully iRacing got out of it fairly well... (well, at least better than Red Bull GRC!)

People saying this is just a game, who cares, have not understood what iRacing is. People saying that would better stick to offline racing sims or other sims without a subscription. As iRacing is special because it is more than a game, it is a sim community, for people who do not want just a game, but something as close to real racing as possible. And security rating is there for that. If you want to play a destruction Derby game, go elsewhere :)
@Nobody-xe9fc

@@harf4ng all things considered, it is Still. Just. A. Game. Think twice before wanting to incriminate someone for playing a video game in a way you don't want him to. So he punts people off the track. He's not doing it in real life where real harm can occur to driver or vehicle. Banning a professional driver from iRacing, no matter the reason, will only piss people off and make the userbase smaller as a whole. What should have happened is there should have been no ban at all, only show video evidence of this guy's actions in game and let the footage do what the ban won't do.
@harf4ng
@harf4ng 6 жыл бұрын
@@Nobody-xe9fc the goal of SR is to put people driving recklessly to lower categories. And when someone is driving too hard he is banned, because if he is not, that will piss people who want to drive well. And if they do not ban him just because he is a pro driver means there is injustice. Why an unknown driver should be ban and not a pro one? People are paying a subscription to race a sim, not to be pissed of by a reckless driver. If someone wants to drive recklessly, there are plenty of other racing sim to do so, without pissing other people who actually pay to race. I liked iRacing because of the Sr system, because thanks to the Sr system races are cleaner than with other offline racing sims with online features. Also note that if a driver drives recklessly on a private server in another sim, he will be banned the same way. Better ban ONE Racer, even a pro one, than loosing all other racers in the series that do not want to be bumped into by a reckless driver. Also to me iRacing is more than a game. When you race 3 hours for the indy 500, this is more than a game, this is for dedicated Racer who want to have a racing experience the closer to reality as possible. Not playing just a Mario kart :)
@harf4ng
@harf4ng 6 жыл бұрын
@@Nobody-xe9fc you say I shouldn't want to incriminate someone for playing a game in a way I don't want him to, but this is not just ME. He has been banned because he is playing in a way iRacing does not want him to play, as iRacing wants clean, competitive racing, and not just destruction Derby. Letting people drive recklessly means they will loose their player base, the ones that do not want destruction Derby kind of gameplay.

I know F1 is sometimes quite difficult to understand for new fans, that it is a mechanical sport. It' s not guaranteed the best driver wins, It's the best team, the best mechanics, the team with the most money to spend. Don't use mechanical problems of the car/team against a driver, or you will be laughed at, and nobody will take you seriously. If you want to discredit a driver, stick to the facts, or in your case, because you are still learning the sport, do research and ask a lot of questions!

Pretty much, though this is based on personal bias. I don't even rate him high as a professional at all. Especially considering that people such as Scott Pruett(a cleaner and more experienced driver than Speed can only dream of getting close to emulating) and Robert Kubica exist. Hell, I even favour Solberg and Foust as better drivers in the realms of rallycross in fact!

I don't think there is anything going on in his life. His response says it all, it is a game to him and he questioned the manhood of the person who reported him in his response which I can't take seriously as an apology, it's a poor attempt at PR. I can understand his feelings towards iRacing as a game, I can imagine why he would consider it a game compared to his real racing experience. Of course the point of iRacing is to try and simulate real life racing including conduct and sportmanship in both on track and off track behaviour. Perhaps his time off will help him to realise that, or not, time will tell.

Scott Speed's history: 2007 - booted from Scuderia Toro Rosso for fighting with the team manager. 2008 - disqualified from the ARCA Re/Max season finale at Toledo for intentionally crashing into another competitor. 2010 - Crashes into his own teammate, then released by Red Bull in favor of Brian Vickers; Speed then sues Red Bull. 2016 - Clears himself on a competitor, junks his own car, spends the rest of the event throwing a tantrum (Seattle) Borderline delusional to claim he was "clean as a nun." Scott is mad fast but completely incapable of getting along with people.

I know this video is a month old now, but I'd like to say that I know Scott Speed personally, i am friends with his stepson. I've used his simulation rig before, and he seems pretty open about letting people race on it. I dont have anyway to prove this without personal information, but I think it is plausible that the person racing may not be Scott. I've been to parties at his house where many people have raced. Take my word into consideration, but maybe he has been having bad days. Thanks for reading this if you did. While I have not been doing much iRacing recently, Speed and some of his pals have always been abusive on the service. Incidents do not reflect his overall attitude, especially in chat. He is a pro, and most of us are not, he has very little respect for that and has been known to bully others on the track just trying to have a good time and a good race. This is not surprising, and iRacing vets are most def. not surprised.

You enter into the sim racing world knowing that almost everyone involved with it takes it very seriously, you decide to become a spokesperson for that arena, representing not only yourself, but your sponsors, if you then start behaving in a way that is not only against iRacing’s code of conduct, not only against your sports code of conduct, against sportsmanship, and plain decency then want to hide behind “its only a game, not real life”, that’s a serious issue. The checks he cashed were plenty real enough. The fact that he would behave this way routinely, speaks volumes about his character not only as a professional driver but as a person, this is school yard bully behavior, plain and simple. At the point in your career that you agree to represent a business/sponsor/entity, you have an obligation to comport yourself to their standards, particularly within their environment. If you accept a Pepsi sponsorship and then show up to a Pepsi event drinking a coke and wearing a “I’m a Pepper” t-shirt you should not expect to keep your sponsorship, nor should you expect after that for other prospective sponsors to turn a blind eye to your actions. I feel like everything I just typed should be common sense to a reasonable person.

Not an excuse for driving in the style of the average Forza player. All games have rules, disciplines and conditions relating to wins, losses and acts that run against the rules of the game. Ditto for the "we're all human" excuse. By that mindset, Dennis Nilsen and Ted Bundy are humans. Holding such a meek and naive concept in any situation only enables repeat situations. Scott had EVERY opportunity to hold himself back and act accordingly civil in an environment that usually deals with these acts of recklessness with ample consequence.

Of course depression is common in motor sports as this depression is no doubt most often directly caused by diet and lifestyle. But in the world of professional sports, right or wrong, there is no tolerance and no excuse and no room for unprofessional behaviour and everyone in sports is aware of this and aware of the proverbial blade that hangs above every participant ready to cut them off if they should do anything that has the potential to harm their sport or brand image in any way.

NOT AN EXCUSE FOR BEHAVING LIKE AN UNPROFESSIONAL MORON! Seriously, I don't play iRacing and I fully agree with the sentiments of the mods' decision to suspend him. The fact that he is a spokesperson for the game provides a quantifiable amount of really good reasons for him to act like a professional, and not behave as if he is some twat playing Forza 7's public online lobbies. Also, as for the "it's a game" excuse that some people are foolishly using to misinform people. All games, be it virtual and fictional such as Call of Duty or realistic and fraught with real danger to your health such as Boxing have rules in regards to win conditions, loss conditions and acts that run against the rulebook. By your warped thinking, it is OK for me to use wall hacks on Call of Duty and in addition, use judo moves in a Boxing match. Even if these acts run counter to the rules of both games. Hell, taking something seriously is leagues better than taking nothing seriously. Balance is everything and all that good stuff. We're not anarchists. And in an environment that frowns upon turning your car into an unguided missile, you have to respect that. As for your "Amazing how people on the internet have never met this guy, won't ever meet this guy, have no facts on his life whatsoever but still think they can dissect his life and tell you exactly what is going on with him." comment, humans are predictable. You don't have to know someone personally to get a grasp on how their mental state is. Especially when said person is known for such reckless and idiotic behaviour in real life and on the internet.

I'm not from the US though(a not-so-proud Limey is a more accurate description, you can check for yourself in my account bio), 'and don't make this an unnecessary political jibe. Also, by your own mindset, criminologists have to be personally connected to the criminal to know them and how they work/operate in any environment(which makes no sense in reality). Hell, there are entire databases in regards to all sorts of mental health illnesses and physical ailments for the both of us to understand how humans operate and behave. Also, on the internet, if someone leaves a good enough trail, people who DON'T know them personally can get a good bead on how they act and work in their lives. Even personal information gets out into the light of the public. But this is irrelevant(sort-of), the point is that a professional in the real world, who is linked to a game to a professional level, has contributed to the game's content and is earning money from said spokespersonship, and got suspended for not acting like a professional because instead, he behaved like an unprofessional clown in a public forum. Considering his off-paddock antics in regards to his firing from Torro Rosso, his retaliatory antics in ARCA, and now, this. I highly doubt that the man is going to change. Old and damaging habits die slowly if they wither at all.

No matter who was at fault in the first incident, you can not ever be allowed to just go on a rampage. With a lot of people its contagious and then they join in, next thing almost all of the participants think its ok to drive like lunatics. They don't seem to care about the guys who practice all week long, only to be taken out in some stupid way. That should not ever be part of racing. Skills should be the only determining factor. whether its engineering skill, steering skills or throttle/brake skill. it should never be about who has the better internet connection (netcode), who has more depression, more money, more sleep, more alcohol, or just more B.S. Excuses. Scott Speed DEserved to be suspended. Kudos to iRacing for not giving him special treatment because of his celebrity status. I have seen other celebrity drivers do some disgusting things, and I did not protest for fear iRacing could well take their side and give me a hard time or something, maybe even kick me?!?!?! Who knew? Now I know iRacing will just do what is right, no matter who it is. iRacing Rules!!!

Everybody has bad days. We don't know if Jake did something to piss him off in the first place either. Pissing someone off who's on a bad day, even if without intention (not enough space during corners, making him go too wide, etc - you don't know what happened in the race, or at least I don't) could lead to a behaviour like that. Sure, it's iracing, you need to control yourself, but if you're even a casual gamer (let alone a "real" one), we've all been there at least once, so we all know that story of "fuck this, it's a game, I don't give a fuck" and proceed to wreak havoc across the track/map. This only blew up because he's a professional driver and a spokesperson for iracing, so he MUST contain that behaviour... but I'm not gonna judge him for that because I understand the frustration that games give sometimes. What I can blame him for, thought, is that poor of an excuse. A bad day and something triggered a "fuck you" event? A simple sorry is enough, no need to attack the damn dude who reported you, especially with a childish insult as an attack on apparent manhood... that's just low.

The actual racing press that has covered this story may not be to good for Scott. I mean, iRacing utilized him to develop GRC (paid or not) and due to that he is essentially "the face" of this genre in the sim racing world. Hell, he may in fact be the face of GRC, but I wouldn't know... I don't watch it. Could a precedent be being set here? I think it's very possible. He is supposed to be a professional driver. We as sim racers at times get opportunities to race these guys. He really should be ashamed (although his actions speak volumes post suspension) so I doubt he actually is. I've never been a fan of his, not a GRC fan at all, but kids..... KIDS are. Kids want to meet this guy, look up to him, BE HIM. It's just sad really.....

I raced him a couple of times when I was racing Mazda Mx5, I think what was all the way back in 2011. He was aggressive then too. In fact, one time I was going to pass him and he flat out squeezed me out of the track and onto the gravel. I haven't raced in years, and frankly not surprised to see this. But this is just flat out stupid, even for ss.

One of the things my mother always said when I was growing up... if you'd had a bad day at school / work / life, whatever, that's no excuse to take it out on other people. In doing so, you potentially diminish someone else's quality of life or enjoyment. I get that Scott *may* have been going through a difficult time IRL, but perhaps if that was the case he should've jumped onto Need For Speed or something without an online counterpart. All for a publicity stunt? Hmm.

I wonder how much he invested in his sim rig. Considering he sold it for over $7,000. Also, going back to average incident points per race, I think it's quite normal to have a higher number in that category on the road side considering the more opportunities to get off track 1x's. During long races, those would definitely add up. Especially at tracks like Spa or Imola.

This is largely estimation of the value Heusinkveld Sim Rig GT - $1,700 Additional 80/20 for Shifter/Handbrake mount - $75 Seat - $500? Open Sim Wheel - $1,000 Custom Steering Wheel Rim - $800? Manu-Factory Sequential Shifter - $400 Heusinkveld Engineering Handbrake - $250 Heusinkveld Engineering Sim Pedals Ultimate - $1560 Don't have any specs on PC, so I'll estimate on what would power triples, based off of my system (I have the same case, at least). For a system like that (not adjusted for Bitcoin inflation), I'd estimate around $1,700. Triple 27" gaming monitors: $600? So, my rough estimate on the Sim Rig setup, would be around $8,475 (based off of the numbers I listed). Add in the cost of wires, included software, the fact that it's all pre-configured, and I could totally see how he would be justified asking $7,500 for the setup.

Sim Racing Paddock I would agree with Shaun Cole on the fact that he was being an asshole about getting banned and he pretty much pulled the "screw you guys, I'm going home" when he sold his whole rig. I know he's salty about being banned, but he brought it upon himself. Maybe this will be a hard lesson for him to learn that he should always take sim racing seriously. That's if there isn't anything going on in his personal life right now...

You had mentioned that you suspected personal issues may be playing a role in Scott's outbursts. I'm pretty heavily into RC racing, and can tell you that Scott co-owns a nationally recognized RC track that pulls in major names from around the country. Sometime in the past few months he found out that his landlord would not be renewing his lease and that after quickly building up one of the nicest clay tracks in the country, it would have to be moved and switched over to carpet. Taking a financial and personal hit like that could totally explain the stress displayed on the sim.

I'm just curious cause it came out recently the Red Bull GRC was ceasing it's operations if that didn't have an impact on it. IE when your inside an organisation you sometimes find out thing before the average person. Did he know about this back when these incidents where happening that there might be trouble and then due to that after finally finding a series that he could be successful in, and now having to decide do I uproot my family again and move them back to Europe to try a different Rallycross series or do I just give up. This may have been what cause his change in his driving style on sim racing.

Apart from the "fun" series there are hosted events, last pricing I remember is that you pay $1 USD to rent an iRacing server for one hour. What you do there then is your own call. Outside of iRacing, I don't really know of any demolition derby simulator. Wreckfest is a demolition derby sort of game, but I believe it's not multiplayer, and at any rate the physics involved are simplified compared to iRacing.

Speed, even way back in his F1 days had a cocky attitude. I still remember a brief conversation with ITV Sport just before his first race. He kinda suggested that he'd be the new Shuie and shake the sport up so-to-speak. We all know how that turned out over his brief career but ofc, that was entirely the teams/car's fault. Every race. 🙄 The fact he is, if anything even worse now is sad. Not to mention that one would have imagined he would have atleast gotten wiser over the years. That said, I suppose anyone that changes their sirname to "Speed" (ironic considering his F1 history), has to be a bit of egotistical tool. That would be like a bank manager changing his surname to "money". People will rightfully assume you're a bit of a twat, lol.

I was watching this race, on Jake's stream. I saw it all go down. The initial contact was one driver not moving to the right (which is the normal driving line) and Jake making the mistake that Speed was moving as he anticipated. At worst it was unintentional contact by Jake. But what happened after is insane, Speed went full rampage, trying very hard to wreck Jake. I do not want to beat down on Speed, he is in trouble with iRacing and his employers. But this type of behavior is no surprise to those who observe Speed. I do wish to grant the man some slack, but he did not have a bad day or week, this is his typical behavior. He is selfish, self-centered, immature, and lacks any anger control.

His car was clearly drifting left and he was crowding the guy in 2nd place, when he should have been drifting to the right to set his car up for the Schumacher esses. If you are in this situation what you want to do is slow down, that way when he tries to clip you you wont spin out and he will lose traction and spin out. If you want to make him pay you can slow down so he is in range to pit and bait him. When he goes for it brake hard, and push in the opposite direction on his rear, he will spin out and flip over. If you are a racer not a fighter the very best thing to do, especially in large races is to let more aggressive drivers pass you. You can typically overtake them with precision as they slowly try to bully their way up the line. Watch your speed, and let your car naturally overtake them as they focus on overtaking someone else impatiently. My race record in 56W-183L (~30% W:L) im not the best i place about 80% of the time.

Their excuse was that I harassed this person when the definition of harass means to constantly abuse or bug someone and this was the first time I have ever talked to this person who obviously bought his account.

Matej Mihelec the thing is (from my experience) you force them off a bit when they get a great run. The streamer didn't. And I have to hark back to tiametmarduk and one of his races. He turned ever so slightly, and the physics went very sensitive and spun him out. That's what happened here.

I agree that the physics went haywire but the accident was still caused by 2 cars colliding which could have been avoided

JimmyFreeman all of the iRacing users went way overboard with their witch hunt, they were trying as hard as possible to publicly humiliate Scott. The first wreck was Jake Hewlett’s fault anyway. Maybe Scott would’ve been okay if Jake said sorry, but no, Jake immediately puts his head back down and keeps driving as if it never happened. He doesn’t care. What a jerk.
