Good explanation Seth. To add a bit more complexity let's look at the equity. The equity will be made up of the cash component along with the total of the purchase price of the stock in the portfolio. Some will use open equity close price but I think this is more risky as you may have some open positions with a lot of profit which can evaporate. This means your position size can end up being too big before a market downturn.
