I do have to say that when I trained in mma (started with boxing then muay thai and bjj) and I noticed right off the bat that the guys who had an amateur wrestling background took to mma like a fish to water and dominated all of us in the class. In hindsight I wish I would have took up wrestling when i was in at least jr high or high school but I was too focused on football and powerlifting. Then in my late teens i realized being strong would only get you so far against a trained fighter so I took up boxing for self defense reasons then after I saw UFC 1 i was hooked and switched to a school that offered bjj on tuesdays and thursday and muay thai on mondays and wednesdays. The first time I was taken to the ground and off of my feet I panicked and of course got destroyed by guys who had been grappling since they were kids. It took me a long time to get comfortable groundfighting and even then I wasnt that great and could barely hold my own for a short time. Sprawling became my best friend and even then I still would eventually get my ass handed to me😂

@@megavolt67 this dream match has been brought up A LOT. And most debaters agreed on the rule set determining the winner. For me however, I'd pick Lesnar. There's many stories of dirty fighting in the amateur ranks. Ever hear of illegal technique, "oil checker?" Might want to google that as it comes up every season LOL Also Cheal Sonnen told a story of Matt Lindland once intentionally breaking his opponent's fingers in a sanctioned match. Lindland almost died b/c he pissed off the entire Russian wrestling team for that incident. Off this tangent, I'm trying to say it's better to have sport skill and have street fighting to fall back on, than solely relying on dirty fighting and have no legit training base.

I don't know about that. Maybe back when BJJ was fairly unknown outside of Brazil and under the old UFC rule set, which was basically the Gracie rules. Royce did catch Dan Severn in a triangle choke, and Severn is the closest thing to Steiner's contemporary. At the same time, it did take like 15 minutes, and Severn was in control for all of it until the end, even if he didn't bother attempting much. As for Sakuraba, he was trained in catch as catch can and basically a blown up 185'er even in his prime. He destroyed a lot of the mystique behind the Gracie family, and was in turn destroyed by Wanderlei Silva, a roided to the gills muay thai and bare knuckles fighter.

@@dunnono00 Pride Wandy was 205 lbs. so Saku was fighting up one weight class (185 lbs). Wand also was familiar w/BJJ, he just used it defensively (he preferred Muay Thai.) Wanderlei's BJJ came up in his first bout vs Mirko Cro-Cop, which ended a time limit draw but Wanderlei was winning on points. Sakuraba was a grappling savant, who beat all other grappling savants (Gracies.) But he was still one-dimensional and frankly got screwed over by being forced to fight opponents 1 (light heavyweight) or 2 (heavyweight) weight classes above him. Tangent: Saku's mentor, Nobuhiko Takada, was embarrassed that his former student performed better than him so Takada used his political power to book unfair matches for his ex-subordinate, to sabotage his career. Takada was involved in many shady things, including a fixed fight vs Mark Coleman and a brawl where Takada begged Enson Inoue for help but refused to thank him after he helped out.

Too say wrestling is the most impossible thing in mma as top fighters have wrestlers backgrounds is nonsense. Most amateur wrestlers go into wwe or mma as they have no other avenues. However for a sport like boxing, no top boxer in there prime has gone into mma just lower level. So if the amount of top boxers as top wrestling went into mma, you would see difference championship
@byronjuarez65610 ай бұрын
To summarize your word salad, "pro boxing pays better than mma - hence we don't see many high level boxers in mma." However a few have tried (James Toney and Butterbean) and lost convincingly to names unknown comparatively to them (I'm not calling Randy Couture and Genki Sudo "randoms" but they don't have boxer fame.) If you analyze what we've seen so far, sport for sport, boxers have no ground options so they lose instantly on the ground. Boxers also have no takedown defense (if they did, they'd be hybrid fighters and not pure boxers.) Also, the best boxers in the world cannot stop a simple clinch, performed by another boxer. Imagine trying to stop a wrestler from wrestling you when you can't even prevent a boxer (who is wearing boxing gloves) from wrestling you? I admit I am biased b/c I've done BJJ for 2 decades and have gotten rag-dolled by wrestlers w/no submission skills... but wrestling techniques just seem to override all other skill sets presented in mma gyms. AND wrestlers have the best fitness in martial arts. Just what I've noticed over the years.
