One of my most memorable experiences whilst attending Imperial Collage was its proximity to The Royal Albert Hall. The Proms, the concerts (classical and pop) and a host other varied events were truly earth shatteringly magnificent. Combine this with the museums of natural history, technology, the Mormon tabernacle, the organ and ballet schools and Hyde Park, all but a stone’s throw away, and let’s not forget Knightsbridge and Kensington Palace, and you’re in an unparalleled universe! And to hear the majestic powerful organ resonate! It’s surreal!

I love the RAH Organ. I was lucky enough to buy a copy of the RAH Virtual VST library that was produced and distributed for retail sale. It's limited - I mean there was NO way they could sample the whole thing. But it was sampled during COVID months, with great care to cover a wide wide range of the stops from sweet and quite to roaringly powerful. I can't wait to get my set up finished so I can plug into that and play with it on three manuals with my short limited pedal board. But what an incredible instrument. 9,999 pipes - always made me wonder WHY they didn't just add ONE more pipe for a nice round 10K!! Seems simple enough. LOL!! Anyway another great demonstration of an incredible instrument and one I sincerely appreciate. Thanks gents for sharing this cool video - once again. CHEERY BYE!!

From an organists point of view the organ has a major flaw and that is of terrible acoustics from the bench. Its incredible to me that in the 2003-4 rebuild (which cost a couple of million) no mobile console was added so that the organist can be down on the floor with the orchestra and concert piano. The placement of the only console means that a lot of the sound goes out over the head of the organist.
@ds18684 ай бұрын
@@epincion A mobile console positioned further away from the case would be useful. I suppose it all comes down to cost. As you say the rebuild of 2002-04 was expensive and was close to £3 million. Perhaps one day the RAH authorities may consider this.

Fantastic, thanks for sharing. Am I right in thinking that, since the rebuild, this instrument just pips Liverpool Anglican Cathedral to be the largest in the country?
@ds18684 ай бұрын
Hello, after the rebuild in 2002-04, the RAH organ was the largest organ by number of pipes in the UK, with either 9,997 or 9,999 pipes. The exact number of pipes is a bit of a mystery, as there are conflicting sources of information for the exact number. Some sources cite 9,999 pipes, others including the organ builder John Mander who rebuilt the organ cite 9,997 pipes. The number of pipes increased in the rebuild due to the addition of the IV rank quint mixture on the Great Secondary division. However, with new additions to the Liverpool Anglican cathedral since 2004, this is now the largest organ by number of pipes with 10,226 pipes. Hope that helps.

This organ has a huge sound, but with the quieter stops on the swell being so distant from the console it must be difficult for you to register this organ well. I can imagine that you sometimes need tom sitting on the tribune to assess the sound and give feedback to you.
@epincion4 ай бұрын
I fully agree with you. A very great sum of money was spent rebuilding the instrument by Mander (now sadly now more) but what gobsmacked me was that a remote console was not put in. If the organist could sit on the floor of the concert hall in the same spot as the grand piano is placed when its needed then it would revolutionise the functionality to the organist
