Jack pal, that's just bollocks. I spent 30-odd years teaching history in Scottish schools, and if you can't remember any Scottish history from school then you were clearly not listening! Seriously, if you chose to stop studying history after S2, then you will not have been exposed to much history full stop, but some of it must have Scottish, because the curriculum from at least the 1970s required it. Post S2 there was always a Scottish history units, and nowadays they are more distinctive than ever. Problem is it's a big world, all human experience is interesting and the intellectual tradition in Scotland is to look outward to the world and not just our own narrative. Remember Scottish history is not just parochial themes such as the Wars of Independence (which are taught endlessly in Scottish schools) feckin' Jacobites (our own civil war, and serious enough business but a real side-show to the real thrust of the history of Scotland), and religious conflict, it's also social and economic history, rural history, industrialisation; within British, Empire, European, even world history - these too are Scottish history! If you studied history at school you will have been exposed to much of the Scottish perspective on these. My final word...if you feel ignorant about anything read a feckin' book about it which I'm presuming school taught you to do. School is a few years of your life, knowledge is a lifeling pursuit. Montrose was actually betrayed by the Rose clan which l am not related to. He was my favourite caractor in history and if Charles 1 had used him against Cromwell he may very well have won the civil war. I think MacDonald who had supported him coming over from Ireland, at the last minute pulled out due to a superstition. His standard when planted hit a coin on the ground and turned around. When he was a child his nurse maid had told him a story that when his standard was turned he would be killed. Montrose was a very complex person who original fought against the king. A great general but a sad war. When he was executed he showed such bravery that the crowds who had came to watch and abuse him were silent.

Lymphoy Road in the Pentland hills just outside Edinburgh. There is a random old gravestone that mark's the spot of around 30 people i think were found in a grave. It says they don't know why they were there and I don't think it had been dated. I'd walked past it meny of times it's abit over grown just of the road and decided to read it probably about 8 years ago. So can't really remember what it says exactly. Just a shot message to say this mark's the spot.

Mark, look at the moor 55.569905, -2.911935 there are mass cists that measure 22 feet approx, that's about the size of 12 cent battle burials. They could be earlier battle burials! Also 55°32'52.0"N 2°53'50.4"W this area is more low lands and nearer to your area, looks like ramparts and also mass burial burrows approx 128 feet in size. 1.5 miles West from the footy pitch! Bowhill, bow is a viking word (BU ) is Icelandic! Bow word replaced the word (BU) BUt BU is still used as BOW in Iceland. We could be looking at a very sacred territorial royal 'hunting' area!

Yeah I can see the transition of the ancients & when the Vikings reared their ugly heads. But to be fair to the ODD ball Vi=king(six kings) there's loads to be dug out still. So many folk are only interested in digging the 1st 18 inches of Roman history. We have masses to dig out yet, but funding being funding, it's all costs money! nah mate, just a very long ancient family tree of McAlister's from the Cape Wrath area. Some unknown reason my forefathers walked the walk down to England. Been all over the world but never to my forefather's lands.x

ancient Ettrick Forrest will be a viking burial ground, maybe royal vikings. They will have left coloured stones in order of floral 'horn' or bird shapes. Look for any that resemble birds, white dove stones (St John) or ravens. Raven was Odin's signature. The eagle, the mark of Eric the blood axe who founded York. The (spread eagle) (can be found on the McAlister heraldic crest) . That goes back to Somerlad who helped built Iona abbey along with St Columba. Contrary to what history says, the vikings helped build the best parts of the Highlands and paid for it in blood!

That was a really interesting and amusing presentation. And it's true. Not all of the Presbyterians died. They went to Ireland and Canada. My ancestors in Canada met up with other transplanted Scots from Ireland in the early 19th century . They intermarried. One thing remained very strong about them and that was their Presbyterian convictions. To the point they would write books and donate part of their farm for a Presbyterian church. Even today, Presbyterian churches in the usa have a strong intellectual foundation.

This was a fun walk about.! It got a bit spooky too, which actually worked some. The landscapes where wonderful to see, and nearly had a feeling of being in touch with those dead folk who lost their lives.. I watched this program because I am trying to learn about my Scottish past. Does any one know about the clan Curuthers? I believe they were a lowland clan, and I descend from a couple who came to the colonies, making their way down to North Carolina in the 1600's. Is Dumbfrieshire near these locations filmed? its neat to tour about places of my ancestors in this method, I sort of get to see things maybe my ancestors once saw. I am more curious about Scotland pre christian beliefs and ways of life. I am genetically 19 % Scottish, and actually am amazed I was able to trace my roots back so very far.. Maybe my people fled to the New World to get away from the Slaughter taking place during those insane religious and political times in which the people gave so very much for the higher powers in control.. any information would be gratefully received as to learning more about my clan and ancestors..

Quick observations 1. that field behind the football field at Phillipshaugh appears to be interesting. The plantations look strange, I'll take a look over on google earth, see if I can see anything. 2. The twin pillars by the commemorate stone, the left appears to have a huge white cross marker? Maltese cross? Templar cross! I'd need still shots to look at it better. Also above your head in the film, the stones look like they have a pattern,a floral pattern in their layout. The upright stones pillars could have been reused from an ancient sacred circle. Must be a sacred hill nearby?

that phallic pile os stones at Philliphaugh, has 'white quartz (salt stone) a face on it? could it be holding an votive offering? Most stoned faces have offerings... Look behind the stone, under it! WOW. Love your story telling, such passion and trutha.x Always look for the limestone(gypsum) rocks, they are the Clan stones, the ROYAL CLAN line! Clan(children of christ) god only knows who made that up! But, The lime or quartz stone is pre history mark.

no worries Mark, I have walked past many stones lots of times and then a mark stands out. If you see any mark or symbol of any kind that looks constructed (man made) give me a shout and I'll look at it closer. Thank's for the video's..I'm learning more in five minutes of your films than I have learned from the BBC documentaries. Incidentally, I have just found an ancient cave/hangout of Cromwell's, I need to go check it out..bit off the beaten track but look's promising!
