As a former SEAL, myself, I can understand the gravity of Chapman's stand and, heroics. As an Army soldier said, we bust the other services stones. i’ll try to help you understand this better.. we r all brothers in battle, american and uk... i was US Naval Intelligence SOCOM NSWC May 15 1988 - July 20 2016 and i was in afghan during operation ANACONDA which this was a part of.. Chapman and 6 navy seals aboard the mh47 helo was to do a flyover of this mt top to determine the enemy strength.. there was a british SAS team pinned down on the backside of this mt by an unknown number of enemy.. during the flyover it was reported the enemy was between 42-60 strong, then the mh47 was hit by several bullets and 2 RPGs knocking navy seal Neil Roberts out the back of the helo falling 25 ft to the ground where he activated his SAT (gps) so US and UK forces would know he was alive, then he was shot in the head.. the helo crashed 8 cliks away... Chapman and all 5 seals immediately went back because they had a brother down and a british team was gonna die without help... they knew they’d have to land close to the enemy due to how steep it was, they knew they had no cover, they knew how many enemy was there “they themselves had just reported 42-60 strong,, they knew they’d have to advance uphill in the snow into a fortified position manned by a well trained well armed enemy and STILL THEY WENT WITH ONLY SIX PEOPLE.. darkness was their only friend.. Chapman was able to charge into the bunker because 5 navy seals were spread out firing on the bunker.. with one kia another presumed kia “chapman” 2 more wounded they only had 3 left to fight.. they were orded off the mt top by the JSOC commander, air strikes delivered to assure escape... later when Chapman sent the radio signal and we realized he was up there alone.. the QRF with army rangers, air force pararescue and air force CCT “like chapman” was dispatched as well as more seals and marine force recon were sent in.. the mt top was taken, all enemy fighters killed, the british SAS team survived ( ur welcome britian ) unfortunately 7 americans died, 11 more were injured... this was a joint operation.. usually air force ccts r with army units, not navy.. when cover is an ac-130 air force, c-130 navy... USUALLY army/air force.. navy/marine

There are couple of statements in the narration that seem incidental but are actually important for understanding the video. Some people didn't want to believe that Chapman was left behind still alive and that he was the man fighting alone in the video. They claimed that it must have been the Chechens and Uzbeks fighting among themselves either due to a quarrel or because they became confused in the dark. The narrator mentioning that it was fully light disproves the "confused in the dark" theory. Pointing out that Chapman had expended all but the last few rounds of his ammunition proves that Chapman was alive and fighting for a long time and therefore wasn't killed when he was initially hit by 2 machine gun rounds right after taking Bunker 1. The narrator also mentions that Chapman's radio calls were heard by a teammate (who recognized and identified Chapman's voice). Another bit of evidence proving it was Chapman fighting in the video that the narrator doesn't mention is that his body had bruising and fractures to the face consistent with injures sustained in hand to hand combat.

My father after Vietnam had nightmares every other night, waking up screaming in pools of sweat. & my dad was extremely tough, mentally & physically yet...those video tape memories played over & over in my 19yr old dads head till he passed away at 54. As a former Army attack helicopter pilot I appreciate your reaction... the SEALS left him. After I left the military I was employed as a counter-terrorist...I realize their situation was desperate but, after calling in an air strike they should have known John was still alive...there is a distinctive sound between an M4 and AK47... the SEALs should have backed him up...no wonder the SEAL command opposed his CMH...they knew they abandoned him and didn’t want to admit it..

If anyone wants a summary of the details not listed here that are in the book, I’ll type it below. Some amazing details not mentioned and crazy circumstances. The books amazing and some of the proceeds go to SEAL Niel Roberts and Mstr. Sgt. John Chapman’s wives and 3 children. There is an old KZbin video from those involved before it was declassified & its wild to know they didn’t know most of this until recently. Chapman & his team were being dropped on this mountain ridge middle of night , was suppose to go unnoticed by any enemy in the Taliban controlled valley below. Their mission was to observe and assault Taliban forces crossing the valley from Pakistan into Afghanistan to engage US Forces. Tragically the ridge tip picked was already occupied by enemy, they HAD NO IDEA they were hovering & dropping onto an occupied enemy outpost of bunkers of 28 well trained uzebeck and Chechnian mercenaries. Their chinook is hovering above the ridge as the team is preparing to fast rope out when suddenly a rocket propelled grenade hit the tail from just 40 feet away which rocked snd rotated the aircraft counterclockwise throwing Niel Roberts from the helicopter as the team was knocked to the ground, the amazing pilots managed to dump the nose and dive down the face into the next valley with a controlled crash. The Team Leader and John began checking to make sure all were ok when both realized SEAL Neil roberts was missing. Last seen standing at the rear opening. Niel Roberts and John Chapman were extremely close , John and niel both were married , John had a new daughter and niel had 2 sons I believe, their families were also very close. Immidiately they decided to get back up to rescue Roberts. They knew they were low enough he like survived but would have been injured and dropped right near enemy. They had no idea how many enemy or how well trained , where they were, who they were. They requested a second Chinook to pick them up at the crash site and return them to the summit . The rescuing chinook came went back to base where one of the injured chinook crew was taken out and the bad ass pilot requested replacing the recovery pilot so he could take this team back in where he was jsut shot down, how incredibly brave! He knew the location now and the direction they were hit from & didn’t want another crew going up blind. The Team didn’t want to wait for a quick reaction force fearing for Niels life so they went up immediately as a Team down 1 SEAL into hostile unknown conditions. The pilot set them in a small valley jsut below the ridge that was like a shallow volcano sourounded by a higher ridge most the way around . The Team Leader stated that as they climbed in elevation to the ridge he stood at the open rear hatch and noticed how beautiful it was outside and then had a feeling they wouldn’t make it out of this rescue operation, said he got emotional and out loud told his wife and children he was sorry he had to leave them so early on their lives , thst they had to try. Thent get started taking fire as they entered the center below. the team leader was 2nd out after Chapman running full speed he didn’t realize how deep the snow was and did a front flip tumble stepping into waist high snow . When he got up as the helo egressed he saw the muzzle flashes surrounding them on the ridge realizing they were on the low ground in a kill box completely flat and cover less spot when he noticed John a ways ahead up the hill attacking the position of a bunker and the most fire up a steep slope . 2 seals stayed out trying to cover John and the team leader from the unloading point. No one knows if John knew where Niel was but they estimated he was likely on the slope near the top. Chapman charged head on killing both. As the team leader climbed into the bunker opposite of Chapman he could now see a larger bunker jsut 20 feet away when chapman was hit by heavy machine gun fire collapsing lifeless instantly . roughly 15 feet away on the other side of the bunker he watched Chapman for any movement He said he immidately noted the body position, his arms and hands and waited to see if there was movement but was pinned down for 5 minutes. Diving to the bunkers inside wall protected by earth on the outside he layed flat facing John and saw a massive amount of blood from near his chest and more blood lower and no movement at all. He stated an instantly incapacitating wound to the heart or head are the only shots that would knock a soldier down with no sign of life so believed he’d been shot in the heart. He grabbed his wrist checking for a pulse quickly and felt nothing , checked again leaving his KIA teamemeber. He didn’t abandon John knowing he was alive. He regrouped with his team and assault bunker 2 from the opposite side where they’d have cover from the Boulder. Still no sign of Roberts One of his team was shot in the leg and took cover behind the Boulder, the team leader threw a grenade into the bunker successfully only to see it caught & thrown back at the foot of the M60 gunner exploding blasting him off the Boulder shrapnel injuries snd bleeding. Both with 1 teammate KIA , one missing and the other 2 injured he had to get his 2 guys off the ridge and to safety until the QRF arrived. Just a few steps around the Boulder and they saw the body of Niel Roberts with a gunshot to the head. It’s not said why the drone operators didn’t mention it recorded his execution at close range. Sadly , that would have saved lives , in less of a rush they could have waited and gone with the QRF and assaulted the bunkers or let the Specter gunship remove threats instead of going into a horrible LZ massively outnumbered and over powered . They slid down the slope & called for close air support reporting John and niel KiA. Sadly it didn’t destroy the bunker 2 which would add additional KIA. After laying the cover rounds and things stayed quiet for 45 minutes .The specter had to refuel and left with the 3 team memebers a ways off and QRF on its way. The CIA predator drone was also the first ever ARMED drone in military drone history specifically for this mission armed with 4 hellfire lazer guided missiles on tap. It’s not stated why the drone pilot did not fire any of the hellfires where a single one would have leveled bunker 2 . Over comms John’s suddenly heard for a moment before going static. Author states he’d of been calling to warn the QRF chinook the LZ was an ambush & direct the drones hellfires to level bunker 2. Team Leader said the thought thst haunts him most was John being unconscious for 40 minutes loosing a lot of blood, in shock in freezing temperatures in the snow waking up in severe pain , noticed the brighter sky, & his team gone and abandoned by his team. he could have waited for the QRF, he instead continued his job to protect the QRF immidately to pin them down. At close range Chapman engaged 24 mercenaries with heavy weapons. The team leader now knew Chapman must be alive but was no way for him to get back up to him or communicate. Chapman was seen being hit and collapsing a number of times while getting up every time to engage then enemy in all directions as me maneuvered away from bunker 1 to draw the enemy his direction or get a better assault angle on bunker 2 he was shot and knocked down when the enemy charged and Chapman killed him at close range with his sidearm, his rifle in the snow he was shot again and then charged by the second . He stood up with no weapons in hand as the enemy just feet away drew a knife and John began to fight hand to hand killing the fighter , a 3rd charging enemy met him in hand to hand combat immediately after and John killed him also . Prior to these 3 charges it’s estimated John was shot 6 times total and had shrapnel wounds from a grenade tossed in the bunker. In SHOCK massive blood loss, 6 bullet wounds and shrapnel wounds and he fought 2 Chechnian/Uzbek fighters hand to hand for 7 minutes! Killing both and the first by pistol. He picked up his rifle and moved back to the bunker severely wounded before his final heroic act climbing out of the bunker to draw fire to himself and suppress Ememy fire again when the RPG hit the chinook . The first 3 QRF were killed instantly exiting by fighters waiting on the protected ridge jsut 50 feet from the open tail, continuing cover and with 3 rounds left he was shot thru the heart . The autopsy listed 14 total bullet wounds and 2 groupings of shrapnel , still effective and deadly a sole fighter against 24 well trained mercenaries. I believe the total number of friendlies lost KIA was 7 the battle went on all day into the night with injured soldiers and crew still in the helicopter being attended to and the 3 team members on the other side of the open valley. Thst night the QRF forces eliminated the rest of the enemy with some close air support but the drone never fired a single hellfire and monitored the whole thing loitering above. John Chapman’s total enemy kills was 7 , 4 by M4, one sidearm and 2 hand to hand combat kills. The Combat Controller thst wrote the book and account stated the fairly newly declassified drone footage is used today in special forces hand to hand combat training to demonstrat. the author thsts done all the research was an Air Force Combat Controller also with 22 years in the military in his job, a bad ass special forces legend himself who donated a percentage of the books profits to John and Niels wives and is now working with Hollywood on a movie about the event. This will be seen on the big screen like The lone Survivor tribute and like Marcus Luttrell , he’s promised to get it completely right to honor those lost. He wants the same director thst did Lone Survivor who didn’t take a paycheck from movie ticket sales donating his earnings to the families of operation Red Wings KIAd families. I watched this video once before and it broke my heart. I come from a military family, so we stick together and his family would have had many hands reaching out to them in support but alone, at night, when there is no one around, a Mother still cries to this day I'm sure. I could not bear to watch it again, sorry. I do thank you though for sharing it with other's that may not have seen it. God Bless John Chapman.

I can't imagine what this man was experiencing physically in terms of pain. Then to maintain the mental focus in order to be able to continue engaging the enemy.....unbelievable is an understatement.

Some back story for those unaware, Roberts fell from the first Helicopter, whether he died from the fall, or the enemy, I am not sure. Roberts was a SEAL apart of the SEAL Team/Squad and Chapman was with this Squad. The Helicopter was hit by an RPG, almost crashing(Roberts fell sometime during this time) but the Pilots were able to recover, return to base, make a rather hard landing, basically a controlled-crash landing. The SEALS and Chapman, immediately boarded another Chinook and returned to recover Roberts. The video starts with them returning, so the enemy was aware, the element of surprise was lost long before this insertion. Gives a bit of understanding to Chapman rushing the enemy, as soon as touching down. The Pilots no doubt were just as fearless, or compartmentalized very well. All three Chinooks were hit as they were coming in. All of these guys are just simply, cut from another cloth.

Isn’t it true, that even though some people’s valor and heroics are so monumental that making a film of their experiences seems obvious...sometimes it takes sixteen years and a book in the hands of the proper person before that obviousness is realized. Hats off to the brains and hearts who first researched the drone film and to the president who instinctively knew it was the right thing to do- - upgrade Chapman’s medal to the Congressional Medal of Honor. Technically he earned two, but the govt. has never awarded more than one to a man. During his career, US Marine Major General Louis (Chesty) Puller was awarded the distinguished service cross- 2nd highest award, seven times and recommended for the MOH numerous times but it was denied because he, “didn’t value his life”. Now that’s some horse poooo!

John Allan Chapman was a Combat Controller in the United States Air Force who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on August 22, 2018 for his actions in the Battle of Takur Ghar during the War in Afghanistan. He is the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. There were many medal of honor recipients before him. They need to change the title of the video, it is misleading.

There are currently 17 Americans who won a second MOH, there is also a Marine named John Daly who won 2 MOH and was to be awarded a 3rd, and then a 4th, respectively for seperat actions on the battlefield. however congress decided that no American shall be so distinguished by 3 or more MOH so John Daly was not awarded a third or 4th MOH , though his actions would of warranted the award, instead they gave him the second highest medal a distinguished service cross for one action( Navy), and then another distinguished cross for the forth action.(Army ). making him one of the highest decorated warriors in American history. There is still a movement to see Daly is awarded his 3rd, & 4th medal of honor

This always comes up. John Chapman received 1 MOH you can check it out on www.cmohs.org/, and it took almost 2 decades to get that one 16 years to be more accurate. The US has had 19 double recipients of the medal the last being in WWI. What the author of this got wrong that he likely had a double citation on his award not the same as a double award. If memory serves you can only get one for individual actions. So those 19 double recipients were either different battles or even different wars and the same serviceman.
