Over here in the east coast of Northern Ireland, our nearest neighbour, and commemoration of Burns' Night is just ready for a 'sausage roll' filling. Scored, glazed, and into the everyone's pastry is ready, with creamed potatoes, garden peas and creamy peppercorn sauce! 😋😋😋😋

Hmmm, lovely. Bet you enjoyed that. I sometimes use that filling for wee pies that have a skirlie topping instead of pastry. Gives a nice crunch/texture. Haggis makes a great filling for beef olives/rouladen too.

As a college student in Fife, living on fresh air and a few pennies (and saving those for beer) I ate a lot of haggis because it was about the cheapest meat available. I hope that haggis hasn’t gone all gourmet and expensive like oxtail, lamb shanks and tripe have over here. I tried making it once myself with everything but the lungs, but it turned out looking like grey horse turds and tasted no better. One of these days I will be back in Cupar and go shopping for a proper haggis.

When I was a kid my aunt Louie and uncle Jimmy used to babysit us when my mum was working. Which was basically all the time lol. I grew up in Glasgow till I was 5 . I always loved all the scottish food but my absolute favourite was Stovies. Could you make it one day.

Oh, thank you! I was on one site and asked about neeps.Someone said they were turnips, someone said they were beets, some said they were pasnip, and someone said "Swedes", which meant nothing to this American! FINALLY, someone said it was a turnip. NOw I am sure!

And then there's rutabaga lol! They look so similar to turnips. Also, parsnips look like carrots, but they're like a white/cream color. I've never tasted turnips, rutabaga or parsnips lol
@tonette6592
@tonette6592 Жыл бұрын
@@texastea5686 I'm not wild about rutabagas or turnips, but I like parsnips. I bake them. Often I bake them with baby carrots and sweet potato slices in a butter-orange juice-nutmeg-ginger sauce,(with a hint of brandy, sometimes). Sometimes I bake those in pastry. I don't do the pastry often anymore as one son is gluten sensitive, and I need to watch my carbs ,but it is really good and guests love it.

And yes, it’s meat. Lamb heart, liver and “pluck” which is pretty much everything else, including lungs and spleen- mixed with oatmeal and spices and traditionally boiled inside a sheep stomach or bladder. When you say it out loud, it sounds frightening, but it’s just another type of peasant food - using all of the animal. And quite tasty by the way, but many turn their nose up at even trying it.
@LindaC616
@LindaC616 Жыл бұрын
@@makelikeatree1696 I've tried it. The spices and Oates made it a little bit like stuffing, so I enjoyed that part. I have to say that I did not know 100% of all of the organs that were in there. And I didn't ask. I didn't die, LOL.
