A "Bawbee" was a Scottish sixpence originally made of billon - a mix of silver & other base metals issued first by James V then Mary - discontinued until Charles II re-isseud it in copper in 1677, named for Alexander Orrock - Laird of Sillebawbe

My grandma used to sing this to me at bedtime when I stayed over. She was also an amazing backscratcher. I miss my grandparents, and their cosy home, so much. Sometimes it feels like I can reach out and touch those times, can still see everything in that house, it’s all still so clear in my mind. But everything has changed, my grandparents passed away, their house was emptied and sold. However it’s still all there in my mind, including my grandma quietly singing this song.

This breaks my heart - my mum used to sing this to me as she rocked me to sleep as a wee boy - unfortunately she's....well you know - tears streaming down my face every time I listen to this - I suffered some drastic injuries in the Gulf too, and I don't know why, but it makes the memory of this so more significant.

I lost my mum last year and until this moment though it was a song she made up... knowing it’s history and wondering if she knew just add’s to the many things I want to ask her when and if I see her again. Lovely song but no one sings it like my mum 🤘🏻💯🍜

I used to sing this (with slightly altered words) to my daughter Allie when she was little. I think her older siblings learned it at school (during the 1980s in London) which is how I knew it.
@alicemilne14446 жыл бұрын
I always though this was "my" song as a toddler because my name was shortened to "Ally". I was quite disappointed when I realised later it wasn't written specially for me. It certainly is a Scottish song, and a very old one because "bawbees" were coins that were only ever minted in Scotland until about 1700.

I’m not even Scottish, I’m a geordie but my mam would sing this to me every night before bed as I sat on her knee when I was little and it’s just my favourite thing ever. Whenever I’m sad now, I cuddle up to my mam and I ask her to sing it. I don’t know how it got into my family since my mams from Middlesbrough, so definitely not Scotland but it was such a big part of my childhood that I would never change

Thank you for the songs & videos Glasgow 1234, I really enjoy catching up with the missing parts of my history. Unfortunately the Scottish side of my family all have had a tendency to die early & there's no one left to ask the questions that you just never think of asking when you have the chance. Glasgow 1234, you're helping fill in the gaps of missing lyrics from songs I only part remember, 🙏. I hope you & yours are keeping well during this pandemic?.... Take care & stay safe, all the best from a 50%-er Scottish/English 'mudblood' 👋 🏴🏴✌️🇬🇧

I know there are verses but the wee kids don't care; they just want "Ally Bally and all the other knees she was sitting on. For example: sitting on my Daddy's knee, sitting on my teachers knee, or even, sitting on my wee dogs knee etc. Just make it fun.
