Nice video, great dog. I have had four scotties and your description regarding their independence is correct. Because they are so independent in their thinking, I found you really need to get their attention before they can learn to do something. As a puppy we taught the dog to look at us with the command “dog’s name, look”. So our dog, “Pepper, Look!” and have him make eye contact. We started this with treats at first, but now no matter what he is doing, he stops and looks at us with “Pepper Look” and then obviously give him the next command. If you don’t first have a Scottie’s attention he will be doing just whatever he wants. That’s why we love them!!

I love that!! Sunny will do that if there is someone outside the front door. My friends scottie, Fergus, does that too!

My Scottie, Max, has perked up. I really love how it's improving our relationship, every morning just taking ten minutes of unobstructed time to play and work on new tricks and some discipline. We loved your video and the things you explain about Scotties is spot on - little farm dogs that have purpose. I don't know that Scotties are ever obedient so much as respecting of you and playing with you. I feel like it is important to aim for a rapport rather than dominance with a Scottie. It makes the bond that more special when you can tap into that.

That's wonderful to hear! Maybe I'll make another video soon. I've gained some weight and Sunny is more disciplined! Editing is a learning curve for me.

I've been fortunate enough to have had 7 scotties in my life over the past 35 years. You are totally right that Scotties are a different type of training challenge--that's why I was happy to have found your video. I have a young scottie (once again) and find him very challenging, especially when walking on a leash. Any tips you have on that would be most appreciated.

I know that Scotties are not the easiest dogs to train. But by giving him bribes every time he does anything you want you are getting him to work for treats, not for you. German trainer Hans Tosutti wrote that you cannot train a dog through his skin or his stomach.
