I'm a Scottish Scandinavian traveler gypsy, and I'm trying to keep to my family traditions, and especially for my wedding which is this March 17th my family comes mostly from the highlands but after the 1730's-48 because of the battle of Culloden we became travelers and that's something we still keep doing. What can I do to put the traveler traditions into my regular traditional Scottish wedding. It's really hard to find things about this particular culture of Scottish history and I really want to know more about the Scottish traveler gypsys 🙏🏻🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶

In the American south (Louisiana specifically), we do cake pulls. They are these little charms with ribbons attached to them that each symbolize a different potential future (airplane= you will have a life of travel and adventure, chili pepper= you will have a red hot romance in your future, crab= you will be a crabby old lady... that sort of thing). The charms are placed under the wedding cake with only the ribbons poking out so no one knows which charm is where, then all the young single ladies/bridesmaids are invited to step up and choose a ribbon. They all pull them out at the same time and get their little fortune! Its a cute moment and a lot of fun. I've done it at a few different weddings, and plan to incorporate it into my own this summer!

My great grandma moved from Scotland when she was 13 to Canada and she lost a lot of tradition, so my grandma and my mom don't really care for much besides tartans and I know when I get married I want to incorporate Scottish traditions so I can bring them back into my family or my family to come. And I'm really happy to know about the Loch Lomond thing because that's something I definitely didn't know and I'm glad I know now. Thanks so much for this video! You're amazing

In Indian weddings there's an engagement ceremony first (so the parents can confirm that they're on board with the wedding), and it's believed, since blue is a color of loyalty, that if the bride-to-be wears blue that something will happen to stop the wedding. Well, my engagement and wedding ceremonies were on the same day. I had to "sit" on my something blue in order to keep it, and it's the only time I've ever had to "sit" on something. Never kiss at an Indian wedding, by the way, which I'm glad to say I learned the easy way--beforehand.

Bit late to the party but why no. I believe the reason Loch Lomond is so popular at weddings - besides just being a banging song - is that it’s a very beautiful love song between a man and his sweetheart. Essentially their is history to the song. Originally it was a poem about 2 Scottish soldiers that had been captured during the Jacobite rebellion. 1 was to be released, the other to face execution. So the one to be executed says to the other to take the high road home, while he’ll take the low road (in Celtic tradition the dead will always find their way back to their homelands under the ground after they die). So his words are to the man to live to return home to cherish his love, because he will no longer be able to cherish his sweetheart on the banks on Loch Lomond.

Paying the piper wi a dram and a kiss. The guests stand and the piper pipes the couple into the hall to the head table. Then before they sit down, they pay the piper. As is the tradition, the piper can demand a dram as a fee if a man calls the tune and a kiss if its a woman who calls the tune. But the bride can no longer kiss another man. So what happens is the groom holds up the glass to his bride who kisses the glass and the groom hands it to the piper who gets a whiskey and a kiss in the same glass.

This is such a lovely video, and you have a lot of knowledge of your wonderful culture. My fiance and I are American but both happen to have Irish roots and are hoping to respectfully incorporate Irish traditions throughout the ceremony. We couldn't find a Reedy tartan but we did choose a lovely tartan that incorporates our wedding colors of red, gold and green. We're planning to incorporate the same colors in the handfasting cords. We're also having my dad put the lucky penny in my shoe before I walk the aisle. We understand we're not native to the culture, but hold a lot of love and respect for ancestors :). Hi ! Nice video (I'm a casual watcher on youtube). French with no scottish lineage here, I wear the traditionnal kilt and this is a true happyness which should really be used in everyday life (if possible and if the wearer likes), yes scottish soft power. On your point n°6, correct me if I'm wrong, but the groom wears or can wear (if he chooses to wear a kilt for his wedding) a fly plaid. The sashe is typically worn by women, with 3 or 4 different ways to wear it (depending of the rank in the clan, if the woman is married...) On 7, I can see a "scottish soft power" in the background. Because clans, like the Ramsey, accept people from the outside. It's really interesting to meet other different people in the clan. About the picky choice, tartans are mostly unrestricted except the balmoral (restricted to the British Royal Family) and some from universities/armies.

I have a question. My fiance is half scottish, his mom is scottish. Her maiden name is of such a small clan that at some point we were told became part of a bigger one. We were trying to look up her clan tartan but can't because of above explanation. So if he wanted to wear a kilt at our wedding is it offensive to just where any pattern? Or better not wear one because the tartan can't be found? Thanks. :)

I'm Scottish. Absolutely no offence would be taken if you decide on the tartan of your choice. You could choose one to complement the colours of your decor, bridesmaid dresses etc. Have a happy, healthy life. ❤

@@valariepriest5740 There are some generic tartans that are considered open to everyone, like the Black Watch tartan, the Royal Stewart tartan and others. If your family clan is a sept of another clan, you can wear that clan's tartan. For example my family doesn't have it's own tartan but we are septs of Macleod so we can wear the Macleod tartan.

The sixpence is because if you wanted to object to a wedding you had to throw a sixpence in front of the bride. If the bride couldn't match the sixpence then the wedding had to stop. Wedding dresses don't have pockets so carrying a sixpence in your shoe ment that if someone tried to stop your wedding out of spite you had the funds to keep the wedding going.
