@@Urolling The 29, it’s truly a great all around mouthpiece for no matter the skill level, in my opinion. As a low horn player, it suits me in the mid and low ranges, and it doesn’t have trouble getting you to high G or A. Looking for a better mouthpiece but leaning toward the Patterson Derosa series (recommended by DeRosa himself). But what I have issues with on mouthpieces, is determining the best size. It comes in four different sizes for the base of the mouthpiece and three different sizes for the rims. They are sold separately. Not cheap at all. For me, I don’t know unless I am able to actually try it. But looking for something also that is good for both ranges. I find a thinner rim is more taxing for me. Thank you for the video. May also try some of these recommendations. Hopefully they are less expensive. Lol. Btw…Really enjoy your videos. They are very inspirational. I loved the excerpt you did on the Koprasch. Although DeRosa would not agree with the break you did at bar 20. He would say that phrase doesn’t have a break until the rest at bar 22. Thus the challenge of Koprasch kicking our butts. Lol. I did the same thing once at a lesson and received that feedback. (Amongst others. He was hard core. Lol) I do know he would have liked you. Thank you again for all you do. 📯❤

I use a shilke 30 which from what I can tell is pretty much as middle of the road as you can get, but I'm curious about other cup sizes. Can you play in the high register with a medium cup size, or is it worth it to get a shallower cup if I plan on playing more high range? I know you still have to practice but there must be something to it, right?
@NigelRamses2 жыл бұрын
As for me, I wouldn’t necessarily go too shallow for aid in the upper register; though, it can help sometimes. Going too far in one direction can have negative impacts on other aspects - potentially. So many factors play into how it will do for a given person: diameter, depth, bore, backbore, and contour. But, definitely try it out, because it may work great for you; each design will be good for somebody. If you haven’t already done so, try to determine an appropriate inner diameter. This helped me most personally in expanding my range in both directions. One thing to bare in mind, if you haven’t already experienced this, is that listed diameters may be accurate from one model to another of the same maker, they can be quite different from one maker to another when listing the same nominal measurement.

Me, an absolute hackjob hobbyist that never practices and has a completely horrible Chinese Geyer Wrap horn that was probably made in the late 1990s, can squeak out a 24th partial G (G above G above the staff) on a Josef Klier 2BK. With a JK WH2C, a Vienna Horn mpc with a cup so deep that I can't touch the throat with my finger, it's finally impractical to play in the upper register. Don't buy a mouthpiece to play high. Buy a mouthpiece to fit your embouchure, fit your horn, and suit your ideal tone quality. The rest will take care of itself.

But what about your rim!?!?!? 😂 Solid advice, though. I think people fall into a trap of getting a different mouthpiece and thinking it’s the bee’s knees when the real reason they’re sounding better is because they’re playing more on the new mouthpiece! The same goes for horns. Example: One of the finest hornists I know plays on a stock Eastlake Conn 8D with the 7BW that came with the horn that they got when they were in high school. They’ve been playing that setup for over 20 years! And they just won an audition against another fine hornist who plays on a Lewis.
