Back in 1958, on the site of a poultry farm in Downey, Harvey and Minnie Ortner opened their dream restaurant, "Harvey's Broiler". The Ortner's hired local architect Paul Clayton to design their restaurant. The restaurant was to be built on the bend of firestone blvd. Clayton took advantage of the location and designed the restaurant to appear as if drivers were coming towards a restaurant that was sitting in the middle of the highway! With a towering Jet Age neon sign and acres of parking, under a cool 50's boomerang canopy, Harvey's Broiler literally stopped traffic!
Just as in the classic film "American Grafitti", 50's drive-in restaurants served as the hub for teenagers who were old enough to drive, but not quite old enough to drink. The Broiler was an American phenomenon. It was "The Place" where the cool crowd hung out, cruised, "schmoozed", and showed off their rides, while flirting with Harvey's cute carhops.
Car customizing legends like Larry Watson and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth hung out here, too. Hot rod and custom magazines featured Harvey's action. They featured the "world's largest automotive exposition", with an unbelievable 5,000 cars rolling in on weekend nights at the restaurant. The Broiler was such as hit that teenagers tried everything to get a chance to hang out at Harvey's Broiler.
The era of the drive-in diner eventually faded. Yet, the Broiler continued to thrive. It became a prime location for local film making. The restaurant appeared in "Heat", with Robert Dinero, the "Beach Boys Story", and the Tina Turner movie, "What's Love Got to do with it?" The restaurant also provided a backdrop for various television shows, music videos, and other movies. Yet by New Years Eve of 2001, the Broiler was unceremoniously gutted and turned into a used car lot.
Bob’s Big Boy is at 7447 Firestone Boulevard in Downey, California and was featured prominently in License to Drive, Reality Bites, and Can’t Hardly Wait.

Reality Bites truly is a great movie. I have seen it countless times. The soundtrack is amazing as well. For those of us so-called Gen X-er's, the movie either represented what many of us were experiencing at the time and all the emotions associated with it. Saw your previous video before about the locations in Houston and it was great, of course, but hope we would see another "bonus" ending, which was fantastically delightful! I love seeing these movie locations even if I haven't seen the original movie. Your videos also make me realize how many great movies I've missed over the years. I can't believe that owner started to bulldoze his business down while the electric was still on. You'd think a businessman would be smarter than that. Wow. I'm glad they were able to save most of it and rebuild the rest. I've never heard of a building being declared a landmark when half of it is missing already. Ya learn something new every day as they say and especially on your channel is what I always say!

So cool! I love this movie. I saw it with friends in the theater when I was 14. The scene where Winona Ryder uses toilet paper as a coffee filter my friend leaned over to me and said "That's gonna be you in 10 years" 🤣🤣 The soundtrack is great too!! The ending it so good with U2's "All I want is you" playing at the end. ❤️❤️ So good.

When I think of Downey CA I think of James Hetfield, he was born and raised in that town. I didn't know the Carpenters came from there ! Licence to Drive is my favourite comedy of the 80s and gave me a life long crush on Heather Graham.

I didn't have my license yet, so I definitely had to see License to Drive..lol. Had my precious Mother pick it up for me on her way home from work (bless her sweet heart) and the movie was terrific. I remember Reality Bites. That was a good movie. But still, my favorite movie of all time in the 90s will always be Titanic. I saw it 6times in the theater followed by The Green Mile which I saw 4 times. But my favorite 80s movie will have to be Back to the Future. Great video Scott.

Cool video, we own the property that’s now Bobs, when my family ran the restaurant it was Johnnies Broiler. Thank you for the cool video. The memories here for my family are gigantic. We keep low key and go eat at Bobs all the time but trust me it’s not the same as when we actually ran the restaurant. This place is an absolute icon part of our family history. The story of how my father and mother in law purchased it is an amazing story in itself. I’ll actually be there Wednesday next week. Y’all got some of the facts slightly wrong with the demo of the building. We owned it and the renter did this without our knowledge. Jim from Bobs rents from us. We have maintained ownership of the property since the 1960’s

My aunt lives down the street from there. Been to L.A. so many times passed by there often and never got to eat there. Was shocked to find out that Heat and license to drive were shot there.

We filmed hundreds of movies and commercials at the restaurant. I’m so glad people still find interest in the magnificent history of our family restaurant. We have maintained ownership since the 60’s and are very proud of its history. We’ve had a few bumps in the years past and look forward to seeing this iconic building in future endeavors.
