I own a complete N64DD collection myself. A couple things you should know. Yes you need a Japanese copy of F-Zero X to play the Expansion pack. You can use a US N64 with the Japanese DD and it will work. You can use Japanese F-Zero X in a US system you just got to replace the back of the cart. If the games are not reading odds are the disc is damaged, They can be damaged easy if they get close to a magnet or not properly stored.

2:40 Dunno if you read the comments Scott (not saying this as an insult or anything), but you're right. There are three English games that won't boot if you tried to start up the N64 with the 64DD attached. They are as follows: 1) Ocarina of Time (likely due to the idea of Ura Zelda being sold as a 64DD expansion before the idea being transformed into Master Quest on the GameCube and 3DS) 2) Mario Party 1 (initial plan was to make minigame expansions that would be sold as 64DD add-ons, but those expansions just became Mario Party 2 and Mario Party 3) 3) F-Zero X (Japanese version checks for the Expansion Kit while the USA version never bothered to remove the code check) I guess those who handled making the localized versions of those three games never bothered to remove the 64DD checking functionality for those titles as they didn't expect many people to import a 64DD console. But yeah, the 64DD prevents the USA versions of those three games from booting due to unremoved checks during the booting process. That being said, the Expansion Kit does have a combined, translated version floating around that could be played on a specific version of a special cartridge if you wanted to try out the English version on original hardware. F-Zero X is import friendly as well as most of the menus are in English (it's pretty much course subtitles, the track editor, and a bunch of the ending screens on the higher difficulties that are stuck in Japanese), so you could still check it out if you have a Japanese copy of X (I highly recommend grabbing a copy if you can as the Expansion Kit is awesome).

Also wanna add that the Expansion Kit also improves audio a TON as the base game only has Stereo sound effects and Mono music due to cartridge space limitations (devs focused primarily on gameplay and framerate for the game). You get Stereo music with the Expansion Kit, and SUPPOSEDLY the sound effects are in Surround through the old Dolby Pro Logic approach to handling Surround sound over Stereo cables (I can't verify that). Furthermore, several music tracks got expanded, and Rainbow Road actually has a metal cover of the N64 version of the course. You can also enable the Super Falcon, Super Cat, and Super Stingray machines for Captain Falcon, Jody Summer, and Samurai Goroh through the Course/Car editor menu. It takes a while to get used to those menus, but you can eventually find the option to set those three preset machines to those three racers. Blood Hawk is still one of the best cars in the game (if not THE best car in the game) since E grip is better for speed gains than A, but the Super machines are still a neat addition.

Part of me has always wondered if the N64's problems would've been better if this had been their main media format from the start, but 64DD discs held 64 MB (the same as the very largest N64 carts but only 3 N64 carts ever actually used them) and while 64 MB is significantly bigger than the 16 or 32 MB most N64 games had it's still like a tenth of a CD. These games would have had loading screens like PS1 games but still not have had the giant storage space of PS1 games. In some ways it would've been the worst of both worlds, not the best. I suppose the flip side is you could do multiple disc games on this when you couldn't do multiple cartridge games on the N64 IRL so 64 MB wouldn't be a hard cap, but these things would still be way more expensive to produce than CDs so maybe you get like a rare two disc game on this tops and it's still only 128 MBs.

The idea was you couldn't do multiple carts on the N64 itself, but you would be able to with the DD. You'd be using a single 64mb cart in the N64 for shared assets and swapping disks in the DD as needed, essentially allowing for a "please insert disc 2" moment on the console. They couldn't find a way to bring the production costs down; 64mb carts cost a small fortune to produce and the disks weren't much better, not to mention the packaging that would be required for a retail game that utilized it. Scrapped idea that was cool in theory, but with no feasible way to actually execute it.

Mario Artist and Sim City are a genuinely good time. Otherwise, there's nothing else on the 64DD that's worth doing. I only keep mine around for if I'm ever short on rent. And, yes, the F-Zero X expansion only works with the Japanese version. The DD64 doesn't even acknowledge any other version of the game in the cartridge slot and just pisses and moans that you have the wrong cartridge in the N64. I think it just checks the game's header before it attempts to communicate. Also, I'm pretty sure 64DD disks are magneto-optical, meaning that they can just kick the bucket if they sit on of or near a CRT or magnet. Error 23 is a general disk failure, and half of my games have this error.

No, if you use any other version of F-Zero X, nothing will even boot. You will just get a black screen. And 64DD are magnetic disks, not magneto optical. Errors in the 20s usually means a disk read/write error.

But F-Zero X gives the same general "yo, this ain't a game, it's an expansion. please insert F-Zero X and reset" message with any other version of the game, or any other game. Definitely boots to the same screen with Diddy Kong Racing and Turok 3, at least. Could crash the game or something if they're actually trying to communicate, maybe. I'm not sure, I don't have a US copy. Also, my understanding of the error code is from my _very_ limited Japanese. I just assumed "disk borked" Now I'm curious if that error is salvageable, though.
