Scotty lived most of his life during a tense Cold War with the Klingons. Even if he wanted to move past his prejudices after the events of ST:VI, it doesn't mean it was easy or quick.
@Thena_the_Grey7 ай бұрын
Exactly. It wasn't "racism", it would be xenophobic. it was also literal combat related animosity as it wasn't just a cold war. There was combat between them on several occasions (the Klingon and Starfleet). I dread to think what Sarah is going to say when they get to DS-9...or Voyager. She's going to say the Borg are good people and that Janeway was racist 🙄

I always thought this conflict between Geordi and Scotty's philosophy of working with their captains was interesting. Like, is that difference a product of their captains? Would Geordi inflate his estimates if Kirk was his captain? Would Scotty be more transparent if Picard was his captain?
@TobyDeshane7 ай бұрын
I never gave a lot of thought to Scotty's "miracle worker"-obsessed time inflation. At least until I started giving estimates to clients at work. Once you give an estimate, they often don't want to hear that it will take longer, which it inevitably will thanks to unforeseen problems. So it makes sense to pad the estimate to give yourself a bit more breathing room out of the gate than have to fight for it later. (Though you don't want to overdo it, or they'll start sensing a pattern, I guess. Like Kirk does, come to think of it. 😆)

This episode was released 23 years after the original. A large part of its audience would have been TOS fans from its original run. It was very much a nod to the original and the difference between the wild west of space in Scotty's day and the TNG age. I have been listening to the pod cast for a lityle while and I do appreciate the series being viewed through current eyes but the fact it is nearly 40 years since it originally piloted has to be taken into context. Star Trek in all it's guises has nodded towards the other shows/movies since TNG. One of the first TV universes.

19:41: The way Starfleet and human society functions in that world, although Scotty is retired, he's still very very valuable to Starfleet and the federation---- just NOT in the capacity as a chief engineer. HE still had a working high level knowledge of Starfleet and federation systems(hence the ability to put himself in transporter stasis). Now after over 75 years of advancements and progress, he's set back to a nearly a beginner, which for Scotty himself feels that he's basically at zero. The way Starfleet and the Federation define retirees is vastly different than how we do; however, the issue which arises in Star Trek lore, which takes the form of plotholes in many episodes is that they gloss over the actual practices that keep high level, legends like Scotty, valuable, while up-playing the "I'm useless" sentiment, for the emotional element/theme to be conveyed. Moreover, it's because the episode goes to over play that sentiment to relate to the audience in that manner, it's also intended that Scotty be the annoying, cantankerous old man that he was never in the earlier versions of himself--- AND have all of that cilche character troupes be directed primarily at Geordi--- to manufacture conflict, which goes to drive the plot.

10:30 The cameo effect is a well proven thing, no? Having Jeff Goldblum in the new Jurassic Park movies, or including some of the original cast in the new Ghostbusters. Where was the journalistic integrity? That journalist ask a serious question while a man doing a PR ice cream stop waiting for the exact moment he's going to start eating his ice cream. He didn't do it because care about the answer. He did because he was seeking two things either of which would reflect poorly on Biden. He was seeking what they got a shot of Joe answering a serious question while he was hold ice cream or the alternatively damning shot of Joe refusing to answer the question. Both of which fulfilled his anti-biden agenda.

I don't see it as bad writing that characters describe synthahol as being the same in taste as alcohol (or that it is supposed to taste the same) - there's enough examples from characters who taste the real stuff to know it does not, in fact, taste the same, but those who only consume synthahol apparently believe the description.
