For those interested, the news report played in this video about the beachfront property said "the county is going to lease the land back to the current heirs and then give them the option to sell it for themselves down the road", which is incorrect. The county GAVE the land to the current heirs and is going to lease the land FROM them in a 24-month lease agreement, with the county paying $413,000 per year plus all operation and maintenance costs (the county will maintain a lifeguard training facility there). After that 24-month lease agreement, the heirs can choose to sell the property to the county.

The family getting back Bruce’s Beach is a bittersweet ending to an otherwise tragic story. After the owners, Charles & Willa Bruce, put their heart & soul into making a successful resort for black patrons, their property was seized, torn down, and made into a park - over 30 years after it was seized. They were barely compensated, and forced to leave. Charles Bruce became a laborer, I believe, and Willa, a laundress, and both of them died a few years later- no doubt, of broken hearts and defeat. It wasn’t until 2006 when a black mayor was elected that the park was renamed after its original owners. And even recently, when people were told about the history of the beach, some residents still opposed giving the land back to the family- one lady even rejected the idea, because it was a beautiful and peaceful park she enjoyed and that the “past was in the past” so why bother to change it or compensate the family. I’m so very happy to hear they got their land back ❤️.

What confuses me is the statement "The county is going to lease the land back to the original heirs and give them the option to sell it." Can this leased property be passed down to the heirs of the current heirs? Somehow, I have a feeling that this family is getting shafted again.

"Generational wealth is a systemic solution!" - Trevor Noah 👏👏👏
@victorpradha99462 жыл бұрын
Trevor consistently provides insight into racial issues that very few with the audience reach that he has ever bring up. IT IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE that when white people say when are black people going to stop bellyaching about racism they are completely ignoring how Jim Crow, housing, finance, employment and other forms of systemic discrimination have robbed from black families the ability to build transgenerational wealth. In fact, the heavily biased criminal justice system where the police have disproportionately targeted black people for investigation, arrest, and prosecution for drug possession and traffic violations and victimless crimes like trespassing, disorderly conduct, public nuisance, tags them with criminal histories that then foreclose endless employment, housing, finance, investment, or educational opportunities for these black people that has impacted them, their children, their grandchildren and great grand children. My niece attended an upscale East Coast university. She said that many of the white kids there were NOT taking financial aid. Their parents were paying cash. This university's listed cost of attendance was approaching $70,000/year. On top of that, these kids were taking exotic vacations to Belize, Ibiza, Milan etc traveling 1st class, staying in 5-star accommodations etc. When they moved into the dorms, they stayed in the most expensive apartment style dorms, and used the university's "concierge" move in service where the University arranged for laborers to pick up boxes and personal items, move them into the dorm rooms, put the clothes in the closets, curtains in the shower...basically turn key service. Oh and here's the kicker, they all got fantastic summer internships/associateships, and jobs lined up for them before they even graduated. They were all children of Old Money. The most part, black people don't have the privilege of being children of Old Money. That's a legacy that was robbed, ripped, torn from black people since the days of the emancipation proclamation. BTW, a scholar calculated how much the British stole from India through their colonial rule and pilfering of India's resources. The tally came up to 45 trillion dollars stolen from the India provinces between 1765 to1938, based on nearly two centuries of precise tax and trade data. THIS is the same kind of theft that White America engaged in against black people all the way through the late 20th century and beyond given the biased application of the war on drugs, and now voting rights! Someone should calculate the collective wealth denied, usurped, stolen from black people in the U.S.

The world was supposedly over due to "man-made climate change" multiple times now. 30 years ago we had 12 years to the end because of global warming. Before that the world was going to freeze into a giant Klondike bar within a decade. And the "solutions" have always lined the pockets of billionaires who build their mansions on the very beaches that they claimed would be flooded by the "rising oceans", and hold their climate summits where everyone arrives in their own private jet. They've taken advantage of entire generations because they've pushed their emotion-laden but fact-lite propaganda in government-run schools where they know that impressionable and sincere children can be manipulated. And it's worked! They're loaded, and the poor keep getting poorer, and you'll be furious with anyone who points it out! 🥸

THEFT of black "wealth" is something that is rarely covered. Just like how the British stole what would be today the equivalent of $45 trillion from India between 1765 to1938, based on nearly two centuries of precise tax and trade data, during their colonial rule of India, someone should calculate the estimated wealth that was usurped from black Americans due to slavery, Jim Crow, banking, finance, housing, employment, education, red-lining neighborhoods etc forms of discrimination against black people.

Oh how I remember trying to explain to many of my white "friends" in college the "Black Tax" and how what happened to black and brown people generations ago affects black and brown descendants of today. One particular conversation came about when one of my white "friends" casually mentioned how he was so glad that he didn't have to take out student loans and get grants like me because his parents were fully paying for his undergrad out of pocket. I tried to explain to him and many others that if their ancestors hadn't deprived mine of opportunity and wealth, then perhaps I'd be in the same situation as he is today. As expected, almost all just accused me of making excuses and that my lack of affluence and opportunity was merely due to me and other POC "not applying ourselves" and using the past as a scapegoat for our current situation. Needless to say, these people did not remain my friends for very long. I'm pretty sure many other POC have similar stories that they can tell.
@nuclearwaste20622 жыл бұрын
The thing about generational wealth is that its not earned. Its based on where you are born and who you are born to. So if your white friends didn't earn a dime of that money then they didn't apply themselves anymore than you did. Generational wealth is not earned, it is given. And nobody but an ancestor can take credit for that. And I know that isn't your point, it just annoys me when people take daddies money and think they "earned" it. They are just as broke as anyone else without a dime to their name. Take away their family wealth and what is left? Another broke loser.
