My dad was in the home gaurd before he joined RAF bomber command, he was in a concrete billet with the other guys in Liverpool during the blitz they received their ammunition loaded their rifles but one went off sending a bullet riochetting around the billet hitting dad in the head luckily he was wearing a tin hat said he had a headache for a week , that was his first scrape of death during the war dodging flak enemy fighters etc and bailing out of a burning bomber landing in Belgium and captured interrogated by the gestapo , lived till 96 a charmed life !

The Home Guard was a whole lot more than old blokes with kitchen knives on broomsticks. What an amazing story!

The old blokes didn’t ride on broomsticks like witches - the kitchen knives were tied to the broomsticks like primitive spears …

Operation sea lion was amateurish when compared to operation overlord and that’s amazing coming from the German army who was so very efficient and great at making war. I think they had just gotten over confident by that point and then they decide they wanna invade Russia wow. The old saying that only Hitler and Napoleon didn’t know it gets cold in Russia in winter 🥶 made sense.

Absolutely fascinating! Of all Churchill did and all of his ideas perhaps one of the more unappreciated by the rest of the world was his involving the entire population from the very young collecting metal pots and the Spitfire fund to the WWI Veterans and elderly to join the Home Guard, Red Cross etc of the Island so that every single citizen felt like they were doing their part and were a part of the War. Imagine the '74 war games with the real Germans and Brits originally involved! Oh to have been a spectator to that scene of former enemies having a jovial time seeing if it would have worked! I wish those entire war games would have been recorded!

The youth today have not been tought by the people that should have tought them about the sacrifice of so many people and soldiers to prevent this from happening again. It truly feels like they have no idea the evil things man can do. ...EDIT: Thanks for the video I hope lots of younger people can learn from this.

In that wargame how did the Royal Navy get through the German mines? And once the Royal Navy engaged the Germans, what became of the Luftwaffe?

The luftwaffe wasn't suitable to attack ships nor were they properly trained too and also at this point in the war they didn't have bombs powerful enough to penatrate british battleship deck armour. The Kriegsmarine had 10 destroyers for the operation due to the huge losses at narvik but in comparison between sheerness and harwich alone the Royal navy had 30. Bare in mind the actual wargame went on for several days and all can't be covered in the space of 10 minutes.

@@jakebrowncollection1772 In the earliest phase of the Battle of Britain the Luftwaffe attacked convoys in the Channel. So what kind of cover was the Royal Navy providing? Around the time of Dunkirk Churchill advised the British public that the Germans never attempted a cross-Channel invasion in World War I even though the German navy then had more surface ships than they had in World War II. If the German navy couldn't do it by stealth, with merchant ships and unarmed women and children as the target, the German navy wasn't interested in giving battle.

There is an episode of Time Team that says a wargame conducted in the 1960s showed that the Germans would have reached the last line of defense before London before the Royal Navy could cut the German supply lines in the Channel.

Your war game was interesting. However your depiction of the Royal Navy simply destroying the German shipping or invasion force in the channel might not have happened. The reason is; the mention of the German air force response to protect it was not included. I think that ultimately any German effort to invade England would have been brought to a halt by British defenses, but the Germans would have penetrated a lot deeper than you depicted before it was over. Nice video though, thanks.

I disagree surely the invasion barges would be escorted by battle ships with air cover, further more the channel would have been blocked with u boats, you never mention the fact there are thousands of paratroopers droped behind British lines therefore sandwiching British troops the battleships would have taken out a lot of coastal defences, I'm pretty sure the Germans would have overwhelmed the defenders
