For a shower system I'd recommend checking out the Geyser system. I tried it at Overland Expo last month and loved it. Bought one there and it's been great. Was cycling last weekend in AZ and it was hot. Used the melted ice from my cooler, instead of dumping it, and the shower was glorious!

How's the propane heater doing in sub-freezing temps?? Its a bigger space than the olympic. You did right by not getting the cassette toilet. The money setup is the airhead composting toilet in the small form factor. It's really easy to wire in the fan there as well. It might be our entirely favorite part of the Kenai...and there are four of us (2 kids). That toilet is freaking awesome and fits like a damn glove with zero interference issues and is removeable. You'll love the extra space. We've spent a ton of time in it with 4 of us on mountain bike/fishing trips etc and you can legit be off grid for a long time if you've got water. That's the beauty of the Kenai/Scout, its not fancy stuff...but that fancy stuff (grey water hold, hot water, showers, toilets) is all BS once you are past a few days with 2-4 people. That won't cut it way up in the mountains unless you're just a weekend warrior. OH, the Joolca is a pretty awesome hotwater shower that quick connects to the Kenai's propane line. None of those are perfect and it takes 5-10 minutes to setup, but its awesome if you are doing active stuff every day. Our internal drain doesn't keep up with it super well on highflows tho. Not perfect but each of us can get as many showers as we want assuming water is nearby (nice collapsible 6gal buckets are great and cheap).
@TheMortells
@TheMortells 2 жыл бұрын
So far the heater has been doing great, the main thing is having a fan to help circulate the air down to the dinette bed for Granger to stay warm. We have been liking our foldable toilet set and wag bags but have heard great things about the airhead toilets!

Love your camper! I have a few questions... 1. Can you make a video on how you made the hybrid couch/bed? 2. What made you install the backup camera to the side instead of in the center directly above the door? 3. What are your plans for water storage? I had a 21-gallon water tank in my van, so I'm struggling to understand how the 4.9-gallon jug plus optional 2 x 2-gallon rotopax jerry cans are enough water. 4. Lastly, how is the airflow in the camper while sleeping? I feel like there needs to be a maxxair fan above the bed or in the flat roof area behind the rooftop tent. I would love to know your thoughts and experience :-) Thank you! Please keep sharing your experience with the world through your informative and artistic videos!
@TheMortells
@TheMortells 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michelle, Thanks and here are our thoughts on your questions! 1. It is pretty straight forward and plan on making a video soon of all the mods/upgrades that we have done to the camper. If you send us a message on instagram (themortells) I can send you some photos of the hybrid set up now. 2. We just did a quick install of the camera on existing black bracket since it didn't require any drilling or modifications to the camper. We might end up shifting it to the middle using some heavy duty tape. 3. We are still looking into some additional water storage options but were waiting for our flatbed to be completed first. Dometic does have some cool water jugs and battery powered faucet that is coming out this summer that we might get. 4. Overall the airflow is decent as long as you have a fan to help push some of the air up to the bed area. The windows in the Scouts are massive so with both of them wide open it does allow for quite a bit of cross breeze. We have a 12v fan that we mounted to help push air into the bed when it is hot out.

Awesome!!!! Best wishes. Questions: 1) Why didn't you choose the awning this time? 2) Where are you putting the skis? 3) How do you manage the rooftop tent with mattress and hatch? Can you go up through the hatch if there is a mattress there, or do you have to use the ladder always?
@TheMortells
@TheMortells 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Thanks for watching! (1) we didn't get the awning with our Olympic either because we already owned a batwing awning and planned on installing it to the Olympic. But once we got the camper, we felt the awning would sit too high and we wouldn't use it too frequently. (2) Some folks put skis and snowboards between the truck and camper, or mount them on the rooftop tent. We haven't traveled with our snowboards yet, but are planning to store them in our flatbed that we'll be installing soon! (3) The mattress is cut out and glued to the top of the hatch door, so you're able to open it to climb up, and then can put it back into place. We use the hatch 99% of the time instead of the ladder.

Hey how are you guys dealing with the condensation in cold temps? We are getting it around the front of the bed area (it gets colder up there), under the sink area and a bit in the wardrobe area. It collects on the metal joints. Wondering how best to stay up on that? Its nothing like the FWC stuff (lots of metal) but its there when ski camping.
@TheMortells
@TheMortells 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Vin - we have been playing around with different ways to try to mitigate the condensation. As long as it is above 20 degrees we vent the window above the goal zero and turn on the exhaust fan, then run the fire on high. That keeps us pretty comfortable and condensation free. If it is colder than 20 degrees then we just deal with the condensation in the morning because having the exhaust fan on keeps the camper too cold.

I appreciate the review. Thanks. I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me your thoughts on a few things: 1. Is setting up the tent a pain in the butt? 2. What is the shower experience like, and what sort of solutions are you looking at? Is there an option on the market for hot water, etc. 3. What kind of potty option are you guys opting for instead of having one of the included options? I'm looking at this and the Cirrus 620 (made for half ton trucks) but I would be putting it on my newer GMC 2500... Mainly because I just don't want to deal with removing my tailgate, preferring to just shut it and have a really easy time going out camping on BLM land on the weekends. Just wondering your thoughts.
@TheMortells
@TheMortells 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad the video was useful. 1. Setting up the tent is much easier than the previous rooftop tent model that Scout was using. However, closing it can be a bit tricky because you have to get all the fabric tucked inside while closing it to keep it from letting water in. Overall, it's not too difficult. It just takes some getting used to and getting a system nailed down. 2. The RinseKit that you can get from Scout as an add on does have a heating element but also we've heard mixed reviews on the water pressure. We have no idea what we're planning to do yet, though we've heard good things about the Joocla shower system and are considering that. 3. We use a CleanWaste portable toilet seat with a combination of wag bags or cat holes, depending on the situation. We also make a point to use public restrooms when accessible. We do really like having our tailgate to use as a front porch for getting in and out of the camper.
@vin9976

We've been running a custom Kenai for the last year with family of 4. I'll do you one better. The Airhead (small size with 2gal liquid bucket) is freaking so damn awesome in this thing. Zero, zero issues cleaning it out and zero smell. The solids bin is magic. I have video of the install and wiring the small fan (there's a 12v line there already). Its almost custom made to fit and is removable. I'd never run anything else. We use it at sports events, driving around town (kids), skiing, and in the backwoods. If just using it on the weekends you hardly even have to clean out the solids. Its strange and awesome. Yeah the tent is a bit of a pain but it gets better as you get used to it. You'll have to crawl around up there to unlock and open it. You get fast at it. The kids love it and its sizeable and really well done with nice features. Just get a cover for it and cutout the hatch part. Shower stuff is interesting. RinseKit is lame. Nice for surfing rise off after being in the ocean (designed for this) but not a proper shower. We have a Joolca that we like because we need frequent showers on longer mountain bike trips etc. If you are close to water its very very cool to have a hot water rinse and its super efficient while plugging directly into the Kenai's external propane fitting. Our drain was undersized (I think they fixed this) so it doesn't drain super well inside but outside with a fold out privacy tent works well. Set up is like 5-10 mins and hose quick connects. Pump connects into stock Kenai 12v outlet above the toilet area. Not super simple/quick like a dedicated internal shower BUT...those things would never work for us. My buddy has one in big camper and uses all his water and fills all his grey tank in like 2 days. If you actually use it, you need something like the Joolca anyways. Plus it means we haven't wasted a huge internal area on just a shower that we don't always use. Those other features look good on paper but when you figure out that they flatout don't work for more than a 2-3 day trip unless you are at RV park...well then they aren't features. Joolca is a nice balance but a bit of a pain...but I'd not go without on certain trips. Its great and we use 6gal collapsible buckets for the intake and drain water. Works great and the fold down to nothing. These upgrades over the stock Kenai are really killer. We also went with the National Luna 72L Legacy fridge that's a hell of a lot nicer than the Dometic CFX3 offering. Its cheap electronics and thin gauged wiring and they've had all kinds of internal issues that Dometic didn't do much to fix. There was a recall after it burned up a guys camper in their initial release too. They just put a sticker on it to say "don't plug it into shore power AND 12v at the same time". That's lame for a 1200$ you are bouncing around for 5-10yrs on. National Luna fits great and is more compact providing proper ventilation for the compressor too. You do have to put your own D-ring mounts in. ARB, Engel etc are other nicer options that will last. Note that the 1500X battery does have a spare APP connection too that you should use for any fridge. Its under the lid and way better than a cigarrete lighter. More efficient too and leave you with one extra port. Equip1 can sell you the NL as they import from South Africa.

One of the only reservations I have with this camper is the height/weight. Every time I see a truck with a solid body camper going down the trail they just look so unwieldy compared to a pop-top. What is your experience in that regard? The second is that heater, I have never seen one before I started looking at these campers, are they comparable to say a Truma unit? It certainly looks much cooler. Thank you for putting information out there for prospective camper buyers. With my 8ft bed truck I am finding myself very torn between something like a Four Wheel Camper and a composite solid body like yours.

We actually haven't had any issues with height, except for fast food drive throughs haha. The Scout body is so lightweight that it doesn't cause much issues. We recently saw a fellow Scout owner doing donuts in the snow with his Scout Yoho on the back. In our RAM 3500, we feel very minimal swaying when turning corners, and in high winds we feel the gusts but nothing too bad. We love the hard sided camper because there's no set up required and it's great for winter camping, which brings us to the heater. We LOVE that thing, but can't speak to how they compare to a Truma unit, since we don't have experience with those. The heater keeps us plenty warm and we love the ambiance it creates. Good luck with your decision!

how has it been driving dirt roads and back roads with the 8' bed?
@TheMortells
@TheMortells 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! So far it hasn't been a problem at all. We now have our custom flatbed with storage boxes installed (which didn't increase the overall length) and have done quite a bit of forest service/back roads. The only thing is turning radius is decreased so we do sometimes have to 3-point turn it around sharper corners, but that isn't too often.

Hey Bobby - we are sorry to hear about your wife. Scout does post all the prices and options on their website (scoutcampers.com) and I suggest checking it out there. Also you can reach out to them to see where the closest dealer might be.

We have roughly 18K miles on our 3500 and put about 26K miles on our 2500 before selling it. Personally I think the 5th Gen Rams are the best looking truck out there and we are very happy with our decision to switch from GMC to RAM.

Get a National Luna 72L and cut the end, crimp on an APP port. It fits as well as the Dometic you just have to put in your own D-rings. It's efficient, quiet and looks beautiful but more importantly is bullet proof. The OG CFX line was good, the CFX3 line from Dometic is not up to par. You can jump on ExpeditionPortal and see all of the correspondence with Dometic support. Get the NL from Equipt1 and if it ever breaks down Morgan there will overnight you parts and tell you have to fix it too. ARB or Engel would be sweet too I'm sure for durability but don't look nearly as nice as the NL.

It drives great on the highway even in fairly strong wind. You would just need to be mindful of the payload capacity in an F150, they are light weight campers but the gear/food/beer weight adds up quickly. 😂

The standard battery pack (Goal Zero) does stop accepting a charge once the batteries themselves get below freezing, but that is the same as all lithium ion batteries. The only times we had issues with charging our battery was when we left the camper sitting unused in the winter for a couple of days, but as long as we were using the camper and keeping the heat on at night we always were able to keep the battery charging.

Not only did we switch from a 2500 to a 3500 and to the larger camper, but we also went from diesel to gas. So we're seeing an expected decrease. Our avg mpg with the 2500 was around 14, now we're somewhere around 10mpg.
