The Story of the Vanishing Cookie Hydrox The Original Sandwich Cookie, debuted in 1908 as the signature product of Sunshine Biscuits. The cookie ruled the category until 1912 when National Biscuit, later Nabisco, created Oreo to compete with Hydrox. Over the years, Hydrox was the staple item in kitchen cabinets across the US. Then, in 1999, Keebler bought Sunshine Biscuit, changed the name to Droxies, and made it sweeter. A short time later, the cookie left the market.

When I was in my 40's I finally realized that all the heartburn that I had been having for years was almost completely from eating preservatives in food. It makes sense that anything that would prevent food from decomposing is going to make it hard for your body to break it down causing indigestion. I've had very little heartburn since I started avoiding preservatives.

I'm with you on the Hydrox, When you spoke of processed foods and mentioned McDonalds, it got me thinking to back in the 60's when at McDonalds they brought in 50 lb bags of potatoes and had a huge machine that peeled them then a guy would cut them in another machine before frying them in beef tallow. It's not at all like what you get today and the foods you were able to eat as a kid are no longer available. I bet you could still eat them if they were still available and that if they were, the whole nation would be healthier.

ScoutCrafter, Patents are funny things. If you can convince the Patemt has changed the Patent has changed the product significantly or improved the the original design so as to change the end product. Our patents were processed through our intellectual propetties lawyers. Depending on the complexities of the patent, outside patent attorneys might be hired. In all, obtaining a patent can be a long drawn out process. In 2005, the starting cost of a patent was around $25,000. By the time the Patent Attorneys were paid, the bill could reach $75,000. Bob

Grew up on Hydrox. My shop crane is a flea market find Hoyer lift rated for 600 lbs. However it is identical in every way except paint color to one sold at HF about 10 years ago and rated for a ton. I’m sure they came from same factory and the discrepancy in lift rating only due to heightened liability on a medically retailed device. No doubt it was sold at 10 times the price by the medical supply house.

Great commentary, Scout! I didn't know Hydrox were produced before Oreo's, but I too liked them better. Remember those huge packages of sandwich cookies that used to be available. Usually, 3-4 rows of cookies to a package. They were the inexpensive ones. I recall they were usually on the bottom shelf. They came with the yellow or black cookie sometimes mixed in a package. Wow! they good with a cold glass of milk. Appreciate the wire wheel review. 😀👍

I had hydrox when I was a kid but interestingly I became a production foreman at the Nabisco Fairlawn NJ Bakery and ran the packaging line for Oreo cookies,as well as others. Absolutely love Hydrox, used to get them all the time growing up. I think the gut truck that used to come around the barracks back in the day on Ft Bragg, had them. They are better than oreo, I never knew why until you told us just now. Also about the hoyer lift thing don't know if he ever got that patented, but if the engine lift was "invented" back in the early days of auto manufacture the patent would have run out more than likely by the time Hoyer came along. Patents are not allowed only if they infringe on earlier art which is pretty much at the discretion of the patent examiner. The examiner does the official search for prior art and "examines" everything and makes the official determination. I know this because I have a patent on some weightlifting equipment and did the entire thing myself. Maybe Hoyer had to pay royalties to someone else who knows, but improving on previous art is allowed and devices do get patented. It's really a blessing he went forward and turned the cherry picker into a useful medical device.

I watched the second tower fall in person. It was some crazy stuff. It's not every day you get to see a building a quarter of a mile tall collapse. Right before it went we all saw the top of the tower lean over a little then down it went. Everyone knew a moment before it was going to go. You don't forget stuff like that. I've watched a lot of video of it since then but I had a unique perspective that day. So I've never seen quite what I saw at the time. Plus when it went my buddy kicked the tripod out from under the video camera he was using. I have some still photos I took of it though.

My big complaint is as we are way older than kids and we have to go on diets or eat healthier everything costs more when they take the good stuff out. She is sensitive to potato starch and any form of gum, dextrose, and she can’t do a grain and dairy together. Our veggie gardens help but she has to be careful. We are going back to old school and will start making our own sausage. I have all the machines and have made a batch with my best bud Aldo. Then we can control the sausage with no additives. The comments about china light bulbs. No way they can make and ship for that cost. Chinese gov subsidized business to kill our mfg. good description of the wire wheels. I need to use a face shield. A lot of candy is a knock off. A regeonal brand did well so a big company copied it and marketed it nation wide. As to a hoyer lift when I first came across one I called a engine hoist which didn't go over well 40 years ago because it sounded like the patient was a engine. All I can say is it''s better than lifting by hand but not easy in crowded rooms.

Patents are granted based on what is "claimed". The Hoyer lift patent US2821406A claims that the base legs can PIVOT relative to each other, and there is a LEVER to pivot them. This allows the legs to pivot apart to make room for a wheelchair, and then pivot together so the lift can go through doorways and hallways. An engine hoist isn't usually concerned with fitting through doorways and hallways.

John, on inventions, something for us to contemplate: are tires really just stone wheels? Are nail punches really just specialized knives? Etc… I propose that what we are talking about are degrees of innovation, not an absolute. 50 years ago when I first learned how to program computers, it was like black magic to everyone else. Now everyone uses them in the form of smart phones and car control systems. You can learn how to program on you tube. I wrote a “learning” program using statistical learning, but today’s AI large-language models like Bing Co-Pilot evolved from those “inventions” but are absolutely comparatively dramatic new inventions. On the other hand, I subscribe to the old adage “everything has happened before.”
