my dad bought 2 vise grip locking pliers in 1954 to augment his Craftsman mechanics tool set.I was 7... the tool set and the vise grips are still in the family in my baby brothers garage. my pop believed in both brands. Dad grew up on the farm and taught us to respect tools. He was an accountant but was still blue collar in his economical ways

I had such high hopes for Malco to succeed with their tool line. It was such a great story- Malco is a USA tool company who took over the previous Vice Grip plant (after Irwin brought their Vice Grip line to China) and employed many of the previous Vice Grip employees, from what I understand. They also won the vice grip showdown on Project Farm's channel. (John, you should check it out). Interestingly, the Irwin vice grips you showed are also made in China nowadays. If that one company is making a profit on an $8 tool, imagine the profit Irwin is making by switching to Chinese manufacturing and charging $22. And, imagine how hard it must be to be a USA made tool manufacturer today if you need to charge $50 for the same tool and can't stay in business. Overall, a very sad day for Made- in - USA tool fans.

Yes- I saw project Farms excellent video- I have a multitude of locking pliers- The Malco’s are the best but they were priced out of the reach of most non-professionals. If they were half the price they were still more then the competition. 🤔👍

yes american industrial manufacturing is dying. I bought a set of crescent locking pliers couple of weeks ago , 29.99 canadian for 5 piece include largest 10 inch one in this video, made in china. I guess 70 percent quality of malco maybe? can't imagine malco charge 20 times than this, I have to say: your destiny is what you deserved. move your factory to asia, keep high quality, charge reasonable is only way you can still keep alive.

It's a familiar problem you speak of regarding high quality locally made tools, particularly here in the UK, there are virtually no manufacturers of tools that are not high end with a price to match. You mentioned it in passing, but the big issue is the nature of the tool and whether it can justify the premium price - much easier to do for a hand plane or a hand saw than for a DIY tool like an adjustable wrench, however superior it is ! It's great that in the USA you do still have brands that occupy the middle ground such as Channellock, particularly where imported brands such as Knipex, Wiha, Felo & Wera are expensive, Klein is less clear cut but have a loyal following and great products too, of course the economics are very different here in the UK !

Over here in England, these type of locking grips, are known as "Mole Grips" (by the old 'uns,, lol, ) it's the name these go by, just like most people refer to a vacuum cleaner, as a Hoover,,.. Mole Grips were the widely available grips, for many years, but now other brands are available,, in fact, I've got a couple of pairs of vise grips, and no "Mole Grips" , !!,, All the best from across the pond... John..

On another Channel, (either CP the tool addict or doc over at last best tool), I used a very similar ad to the one you showed here in your video from Peterson to calculate the working cost of purchasing Peterson vise grips in 1949 versus Malco Eagle grips in 2022 when making Federal minimum wage in both eras, and I found that in 2022 you actually had to work .05 hours less. The fact is corporations have flooded the market with cheap tools from other places with China being number one in that regard but certainly not alone, and we've apparently come to expect a $10 locking plier in 2022 when in 1949 they were $2.50. Our perception of tool cost has changed and that corporate trickery has cost our fellow Americans their jobs.

As an engineer I will always pick a quality tool over anything that’s low quality even though it cost a lot more. The problem is that a lot of people out there don’t get access to the same tools without the knowledge as all the franchises have deals with brands that are low quality and a hyped up price. Can’t tell you how many times I have used someone else’s tools and it like they are made of chocolate lol

IMO it all depends on how often I use the tool. If I’m reaching for it often, then yes, spend $$$. But many tools I rarely need or use and I opt for the less expensive.

On the tools, my personal opinion and approach is that the money a person pays out for tools needs to be in line with the frequency, profession, and reliability of the tool for the job. I have every thing from Harbor freight, craftsman, Snap- on, S&K, and many other brands out there. They all fill the bill for what I do, I am not brand loyal, great video, thank you sir.

I would have liked to see Malco be able to keep it going but so hard to compete with everything else out there at that price point. Even with the excellent quality.

I own one of each Eagle Grip Vise Grip models. The Eagle Grips are one of the best built and high quality vise grips. The Eagle Grips are also one of the most expensive vise grips. The units are too expensive for most trades to use. A while back, one of our 16 foot garage door cables busted while the door was transitioning between open and close. The door got stuck at an angle. The garage tech brought out a 5 gallon buck of vise grips and used six or more vise grips on each side of the door to slowly get the door back into the correct position without damaging the door. There is no way that the average tech could afford a bucket of Eagle Grips. Another example - Eagle Grips are too nice to use on a welding table getting attacked with weld spatter. The dollars spoke, Malco listened, and is shutting down Eagle Grips. A sad story....

I have had a ton of cheap tools when I was younger, in fact busted tools, knuckles and extra time doing projects because of junk tools made me realize that I absolutely believe in the old saying "you pay for what you get". On adjustable locking pliers I find cheap ones will round off their teeth when you need them to grip the most. Vice grips have been pretty good quality the vintage vise grips from the 1970s or older are just absolutely bulletproof I don't know what kind of steel to make the teeth out of but I have had some that have been used and abused even hit with hammers and they work like they're brand new. My Chinese equivalents have been turned into welding pliers because that's all they're good for lol On a off-note scout have you seen the KZbin channel called the "torque test Channel" they test tools both new and old in a scientific manner it's actually a pretty neat Channel especially for somebody that is in the trades or that understands the trades I think you might enjoy it.

You’re right there are two good points to be made with the pliers as a former body tech I may own 100 locking pliers majority being vise grip, best way to buy them is in sets when they go on sale also I would buy used ones and that collection took a few years but I had many imports as well I considered them as disposable since you can pick up handfuls of them in bulk for almost nothing but those are the ones I would use around places I was welding, I found they just can’t take much torque the jaws would pop out of the handles or the handles or spring guide would bend and so on but my point is that I use the American pliers for tough jobs and the others for anything I just didn’t care so much about as to not damage my good ones by a mistake. That’s my rant of the day!

I'd be interesting to see Malcos' "books". I've worked Union manufacturing for years & understand fairly well the several facets of increased labor costs in 1st world countries. It just doesn't make sense to me. For years Craftsman "subbed out" nearly exclusively U.S. manufactured pro-sumer into pro grade tools, all the while being sold in large retail stores (most notably Sears) often needing to cover exorbitant mall rent & employees. I guess my point is just that, "we were once able to produce domestically; innovative high quality tools, that were affordable to the average American". I agree $50 is just too much. It's hard to compete with a very functional $8 pair. I just can't comprehend why those couldn't be sold at a profit for $30 or so. I think we're in real trouble. Ah well.

One of the Chinese practices I think is the government supplements the cost, and they flood our market until they drive the US companies. Home Despot is an example of driving the little guy out of business. Does Amazon still use the USPS for the last leg of delivery below the cost they can support so the taxpayer foots part of the Amazon freight costs. It’s a shame we have come to this. Maybe after this week we will turn the corner. I do like the Japanese and Taiwanese quality. Nice lock description. You sure know your stuff. Hats off to you. Best Regards, John

There are companies which manage to stay in business and grow despite their products being many times more expensive than competitors. Festool is an example. They have good design and manufacturing, but the prices are too rich for my blood. Despite this, my local Woodcraft store has a good percentage of the floor space dedicated to Festool products. Very sad Malco locking pliers was not able to survive. I wonder if the name will be purchased by another Chinese company, as happened with ShopVac, Jorgensen clamps and others. I worked at a company where we implemented a program like that. The lawyers said if the locker had our lock, it was legally our space and could be searched at any time. If the employees had their own lock, it was their space. I almost never searched a locker, but a few times when they were being used to steal merchandise or hide drugs for sale. Yet again, I jumped on a tool deal today. You're costing me $$$! Again. Speaking of those school locker Master locks, my junior high school issued them for the lockers. Some kids would, to quicken the "pit stop" not snap the lock, just position it for rapid, lunch time access. One teacher in particular, Mr. Cunningham would go out in the hallway checking locks, pulling on them to make sure they were indeed locked and if not, he would turn the lock around, snap it and the unfortunate student would have to contort to work the dial. Never happened to me, I always locked up but I remember the guy going up and down the hallway rows of lockers. Mid day amusement for him.

Hi Scoutcrafter I think its predatory pricing they sell things at cost or even at a loss to put other company's out of business then when their competition is out of business then the prices go up. The $50. pairs they wanted to make a high-quality product and maybe got a little carried away. Snap On gets away with it but they bring a beautiful display right to your workplace, make some tools no one else has, offer financing etc.

From my non american point of view here in germany, i always got the impression that american made tools are way more expensive than chinese or taiwanese import ones. You can't expect random people to pay up to six times more in a case like that. Just today, for comparison, i visited my local hardware big box thingy to buy paint, and on my way to the cashier i picked a knipex needle nose plier for 12,80 Euro. At that price point it's a no brainer. Same thing with other brands like wiha, inbus or whatever, the price difference compared to import stuff isn't nearly as high. At least with hand tools. By the way, because you mentioned gedore, they went from top notch to garbage in just a few years. The old gedore (dowidat) stuff is practically indestructible, today you can consider yourself lucky if only half of your new wrenches have a random factoy bend or bad forgings. The price however has gone up and surpassed brands like hazet or stahlwille which were usually more expensive.

I'm sad for the factory for sure. I was unaware they were the same Peterson factory, but I knew that other than them no one made locking pliers in the US. I'll say one issue with locking pliers is they tend to be used and abused in ways that i don't really consider them BIFL. So while I will spend "knippex money" on many tools, I'm not sure I'd spend more than $20 on locking pliers. Regarding the master lock, my Catholic high school in Queens, holy Cross, used that model, with the key on the back for the dean to get access

Why do we fail when Taiwan and China succeed? Simple- we do it to ourselves. States impose living wages, mandatory maternity leave for mothers and fathers, high taxes, minimum sick and vacation requirements, overtime rules, etc depending on which state you live in. The Federal government imposes a variety of laws about environmental requirements, wages, tax laws, health care, retirement, and you name it. So a manufacturing company has to hire a battalion of lawyers and accountants to figure out everything the company has to be compliant with. It just adds cost to the product. That’s why we can’t compete. I’m not saying it’s all bad, but just that all the laws and requirements overwhelm a company that just wants to make something that’s “Made in the USA”.

Ralph- You are correct, however with the right administration I believe that US businesses can thrive. I'm a fan of tax breaks for companies so they stay here in the US. Some people want to bleed them dry. =D

Seems like after every episode, I have to go check out my tool box. I have a pair of the vise-grips that were my dad's. Had to remove the chrome plating from them. Nothing worse than peeling chrome on hand tools. Scout, have you looked at the Stanley 85-610 (locking adj. wrench)? I thought they were a neat idea but the jaws are too soft. Made in China. So I thought I'd try the HF Icon plier wrench which is a knockoff of a Knipex. Only used them a little but aside from being a little tricky to adjust, they seem good. Kind of a surprise, some stores can't seem to keep them in stock.

Do you ever buy extra of a tool? I'm really liking the Gearwrench red acetate screwdriver set that you showcased on your channel. However they don't make them anymore and they're pretty hard to find. Im debating on buying an extra set for when my other set wears out while I still can.

A brand new 8pc set on eBay will cost you $21.90 and that includes shipping.......A 10pc set is $27.80 and that includes shipping.....Seems like a worthwhile investment to have a spare set if it's something you really like....The sellers name is "cripedistributing" out of Idaho.

It’s a shame people complain about 50 dollars but they don’t think twice about paying 90 dollars for the snap on grips That in comparison to malco grips it’s apples and oranges people 50 dollars for a pair of grips that will most likely outlive you if used properly will always be cheaper than spending 20 dollars numerous times throughout one’s lifetime just my 2 cents

The fit and finish might look equal or better than the USA made but what about the quality and strength of the material? Will the cheap one's break or deform the teeth under excess pressure and use? What about the BMC brand? My dad had these and they were a real pain to use.
@ScoutCrafter

The cheap ones will not compare to the higher quality ones... However, depending on your application the cheap ones might be better for you- One example is welding where the clamps get damaged another is woodworking where you need multiple clamps... =D

I wish l had found a local place to purchase Eagle Grip pliers, l like to pay ca$h for food, gasoline and tools not really any local (independent) hardware stores around to purchase better tools today, your pretty much stuck with what the big home retailer stock which is profit driven offerings I have used Bremen brand locking pliers from Harbor Freight and they preform without any problems and show no deformation of the teeth after repeated use

It is a shame that Malco could not stay competitive although it's not all that surprising... Like you mentioned John, the reasons are almost too numerous to wrap you head around. Not to be a downer but I think the majority of my generation (Millennials) has been trained from birth to accept mediocre, short lived products as the norm. Most Millennials are always looking for the newer shiny item packed with useless features. Also the need to get as much "stuff" or "features" for the least amount of cash has become a real bragging point for most. Kind of the quantity over quality mindset... I admit, I did not buy a pair of Eagle Grips. Mainly because I have a couple older pairs of good Vice Grips and because of infrequent use had no need to buy another set of locking pliers. All that aside, even if I did need a new pair, it would be a hard sell. I don't think I would hesitate to spend $25-30 in a store for a pair of locking pliers. I say "in store" because I like to handle a tool before I buy it. I think is gives me a better feel for quality. That left over $20-25 can go to other needs. I suppose to some extent I have been trained too, at least I realize it though!!

If you make $50 an hour using a tool, you shouldn’t have a problem paying $50 for that tool. Take a little pride in your work and in your country, and make the investment. Or you can shuffle in with your Bremens and do a “decent” job
