Sometimes I feel outright homesick when I see great old tools like that Black & Decker, for the days when I did construction with my dad and my uncles. My father is 88 and has entered late-stage dementia - he rarely remembers any of that, but he was a craftsman.

Hi John, My friend, a pilot, leaves his car unattended at the airport for weeks at a time. He got a solar trickle charger that he puts on the dash board and it seems to work quite well for him. Your solution of just swapping the battery seems like an elegant solution for your situation. I appreciate your channel and I watch every one of your episodes.

Very interesting episode today. I was in awe of what you did with the battery, I never knew there were different types of batteries. My wife very seldom uses her car in the winter so the battery always would die. I now put it on a trickle charger every winter to stop it from happening. I am so looking forward to Friday to see that screw driver restoration and eventually the vise.

I forgot to turn my car headlights off when I was out at my my acreage ten miles from town. The car wouldn't start and I thought now what am I going to do. I noticed my lawn mower sitting there in the garage and I thought it might work. I ended up jump starting my car with my John Deere lawn tractor!

Great video👍 That is a great idea with those quick disconnect battery 🔋 connectors on the lawn tractor 🚜 for those batteries that sit , you can take them loose bring inside ,give it a charge and you are ready for service or give them a charge or two during the winter months so you will be ready to cut around spring time and won’t have to worry about a dead battery 🔋. That Black & Decker Shorty drill looks like a great little unit and should give you many years of service👍. That Ridgid pipe reamer is a great little tool for removing burrs inside of pipe before threading and if pulling wires you will have less chance to snag wire and damage them if you deburr the inside of the cut pipe . That vise you got for a $1.00 will be a great project for the show. I would love seeing that vise getting restored 👍👍. I got a whiff of that screwdriver 🪛 all the way down here in Virginia , Wow! 💩💨👃🤭🤢😂😂. I would like to see you make a handle from wood with maybe a gun stock finish 👍👍. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Friday. Have a great evening. 😄👍👍

Great show John...that pipe reamer looks like a miniture tunnel drill. The vise restoration will most likely require taking some metal off and putting some metal on. Looking forward to the screwdriver modification, perhaps a new handle of milled aluminum or delrin, I'm all in for what ever Scoutcrafter serves up!

Yeah, I’d like to see that vice taken from 0-60, full rebuild, polished up and maybe you could mount it in your shed upstate. Looks really solid just needs TLC. Also, what about a nice turned walnut or aluminum handle for that big screwdriver? Give it the first class treatment the metal part is 100% all business - good luck 👍

My $0.02 on the tractor battery. I bought a solar charger off amazon, and hung on the outside of the shed, connect to the tractor when done. About 4" wide x 12" long, maybe $25. Very low current but just enough for the tractor. Be sure the charger has a blocking diode so it does not discharge the battery at night. Kept it fresh all winter without bringing it inside in Pennsylvania - gotten 3 years out of the original cub cadet battery.

Your 90 degree drill is a jewel. I have one that was being thrown away. No chuck, cheap repair. The collar around the chuck protects your fingers when using. When you’re done with the vice, it will look like new. I had several screwdrivers from snap on and craftsman that had the same problem. I also had three fishing poles from basspro shops that had the problem. Snap on replaced the handles. The pipe tools are almost obsolete. Great show , thank You.

I've got an old reamer like that but it's in the BEFORE stage. I remember the old Sioux drills like that. We put a heater and a REAL thermostat under the zero turn. God Bless and happy week

you'll do justice to that vise and getting it back in full service, We used Ridge tools exclusively in the Plumbing / Pipefitting industry here in the "PNW" BIMD (back in my day) I ran many of a pipe mach from a 200A, 300 tri-pod to a 535 full carriage all used reamers as it was called out by Uniform Plumbing Code ...BIMD plastics or foreign milled pipe (easy to spot cause it was coated to make it way across the ocean) plastics was not used but in acid waste systems in labs, or in universities...apprentice work was running pipe machines and I did a lot of pipe BIMD...txs for sharing

Please,Please do a red handle for the Craftsmen like the ones on Rigid screwdrivers. I have all rigid Plumbing tools, pipe wrenches and screwdrivers, hammers, pipe cutters, pipe threaders, adjustable wrenches, hack saws you name it. Its what our plumbing supplier sold so I bought it. I love the look of a brand new Rigid screwdriver handle,it looks like a cherry tootsie pop back in the early 70s when they were not cloudy like today. I need therapy dont I??

Get a solar charger. They are waterproof, and can be mounted outside on your shed roof. It keeps your tractor battery "topped off" I have one for my Powerstroke diesel, and it is great. Best results are to start with a fully charged battery. Put the panel where it gets the most sun, and forget it.
@patjohnson31007 ай бұрын
Great video. I've never seen a pipe reamer like that. It looks solid and sturdy enough to outlive the pyramids. I look forward to seeing restorations on the other tools you showed. The needs of that vise would scare away most DIYers. As for the AGM batteries, your advice about bringing them in for the winter is very important. Do not let them fully discharge. The cells will begin to deteriorate if the battery just sits for extended time, and that will speed up the discharge rate even though they will appear ok after some time on the charger. So they will die again pretty quickly. Keeping these batteries on a trickle charger when your power equipment sees intermittent use is very important for battery life and reducing your frustration and expense. I agree that the prices for lithium batteries are ridiculous. Your upstate property looks absolutely beautiful.

The reverse ratchet on the reamer is to help remover the reamer if it starts cutting too deep. This can happen easily with some of the imported metal pipe (low quality). I have used those for 30+ years. For PVC, copper, brass and hdpe poly i prefer a pencil reamer. I would love to see you repair the vice!!

I use those same battery clamps. If you let a vehicle sit for long periods and it has the OBD II they drain. My old truck is the old system and it can sit 6 months and start. What you are planning is the best for those screwdrivers. You know the steel is good and it will not be just a Craftsman which most would throw away. I call it resto modding tools instead of cars. I do wonder if the patina people will collect the stinky handled ones. Hey it's patina.

Hi John, Great info on AGM battery. I actually have a 90 amp hour AGM battery as a backup battery to support my ham radio station. Right now I don’t have my equipment set up until my shop set up is done. But I have the battery hooked up to a power supply through a West Mountain power point which keeps a float charge. Very nice right angle drill. They certainly don’t make them like they used to. Looking forward to seeing a makeover of the drill. That is some pipe reamer. Very cool how the handle ratchets. The vise looks cool but besides the base broken off, is that braze around the slide looks like it goes around 360 like it was broken off. Very much looking forward to seeing that refurb. Another great video as usual. Best Regards, John

Quick detach is brillant! I like that idea. Letting that battery set in that warm basement each winter will keep it going for years and years I am sure. Friend of mine used to replace his stored outside under a tarp mower battery about every two years. Or sooner. My mower battery is in a insulated, unheated garage (never seen it below around 38 degrees in there and I finally, after five years went ahead and swapped it out. And I'm using El-Cheapos!

Not that I've ever used one, but i was always given to believe that reamers should always only ever be turned in the cutting direction - something to do with flattening the cutting edges and blunting them and thus changing the diameter?
